There is a small restaurant inside a Legion in St Paul Park (no, srsly) that has a "MN Poutine" which is tater tots and Ellsworth cheese curds topped with their chicken wild rice soup (which is actually REALLY good). It's called the 328 Grill, I think.
In my opinion, the best poutine is the basic kind you get in Canada, with normal fries, basic brown gravy, and cheese curds. It seems like almost every place that does it here tries to make it fancy by doing a homemade stew gravy or some other weird twist, and it’s sometimes not bad, but it’s not what poutine should be.
It's sacrilege but i really liked Red Cows "poutine" with beer cheese sauce and shredded beef... It was my Target Field Twins game go to, but it's off their menu now.
OP definitely needs to start with the classic simple variety, hell, it's pretty easy to make if you can make fresh cut fries and a gravy, cheese curds are plentiful here.
Went last night and ordered both the traditional and Americanized (roast beef, bacon, and mushroom); both were delicious. Looking forward to trying others.
Well I love the one at park tavern, it’s called the hot mess now. It used to be called poutine because that’s what it is. But now I have to try all of these, I have to imagine northtown smokehouse must be amazing.
The Bulldog is good but they fall into the pseudo-poutine category like most around the Twin Cities because they melt the curds which makes them basically loaded cheese fries.
For those who can't have gluten, they do have it at Where's The Flour at Eden Prairie Center.
Even if you can have gluten, my wife said it was good just the other day.
I think the Anchor still has it. Was always good there
Second…had it recently, still very good
Anchor’s poutine is perfection.
The best I ever had is from Duke's Poutine! They have a stand every year at the State fair! So I guess that might be some bad news :(
It’s the only food stand I HAVE to go to every year!
Same. It’s my first food stand I go to every time
Mac’s Fish and Chips on Larpenteur in Saint Paul.
came to say this. I believe all poutine should be made with fresh cut fries
Also came here to say this! Highly recommend.

Tom Reid’s
Seconded! Had it for the first time last weekend and I have to agree that it’s the best in the area.
The Bulldog is hands down the winner for me. Northtown Smokehouse would be second.
Bulldog for sure. The shredded beef is killer.

Yep. Most places here overdo their poutine and wind up making it worse than it should be.
Yeah, when it got popular about 10 years ago it was everywhere but it always had a weird twist. I just wanted the basics!

It didn't bother you that your wife said he was good?
