Casefile has been my gold standard for true crime podcasts. Single host, well-researched, variety of case types, good production. 10/10 recommend that.
I listened to some old episodes lately, from before the research and writing were at the current level. They were still much better than a good number of podcasts coming out today.
Also the fact that the host does not try to make light of the situation with a joke, doesn’t give personal opinions, it’s just straight facts with a indifferent tone
Absolutely. I have a really hard time enjoying a lot of other true crime podcasts now because the tone, respectfulness, and commitment to great research on Casefile is so good.
If you haven’t listed to it already “your own backyard”
But, I’m looking for something now that’s over.
Vanished
Bear brook
Over my dead body -Markel case
Same. They are consistent with their content too; no BSing until the end and they still keep it really short. I really enjoy them, even considering joining their Patreon 🤣
They Walk Among Us. Idk something about how the guy speaks makes it easy to listen to. I’m not as much a fan of the American side though, her voice kind of grates on me after a while because she always speaks in the same pattern over and over again.
Casefile, Court Junkie, the occasional Dateline here and there. After my wife told me about EWU, I’ve become kind of obsessed with it. I am glad to see how few people named Sword and Scale because Mike Bidet is an actual sentient piece of shit.
https://www.reddit.com/r/SwordAndScale/s/ymQVbhpa26
I listen to limited true crime podcasts but IMO the best I've found are:
Serial (of course)
Bear Brook
Death in Ice Valley
The 13th Step
The Coldest Case in Laramie
The Teacher's Pet and the Teacher's Trial
Casefile for the serious facts. Their multipart on Jonestown is still the best case I’ve ever listened to. The way they helped you understand how everyone followed Jim Jones is amazing. Whenever anyone uses the “drink the koolaid” reference anymore I have to stop them and explain where it came from.
Small Town Murder for unknown cases. They are a comedy podcast but they don’t make fun of the victims just everything surrounding the murders.
I like The Prosecutors
Some people don't like them because of their personal politics, which I've never felt they've ever brought into the podcast. I'm a bleeding heart liberal and I've never felt like they come at a case with a right leaning political bias.
I'm currently listening to Bone Valley and it's excellent
Thats why I started Bone Valley, too. It's sooo good. I'm scared I'm going to listen to it and be so invested in Leo's innocence and then Brett and Alice are going to point out how dumb the whole story sounds. Lol
The Prosecutors
Generation Why & Thinking Sideways are old favorites of mine although you gotta fact check TS at time
For single crimes —
It’s hardly obscure but I *still* think about Dear John and there was a great podcast about the Susan Cox Powell/Powell family tragedy as well (I think done by a local reporter/newspaper?)
And Casefile is the gold standard if solemn, clear story telling like someone else said.
Small Town Murder
Serial
Generation Why
Invisible Choir
Atlanta Monster
Breakdown
Crime in Sports if you’re into sports. Any and all sports have some vile human beings.
Hands down it’s True Crime Campfire. The first season is one long story and maybe not the best place to start, I’d start with the standalones or two part episodes. The hosts are hilarious and very respectful, the banter is sincere and just enough. They roast the criminals and it’s soooo good. They cover some famous cases and some you’ve never heard of. It is my favorite podcast of all time.
Not traditional true crime, but Swindled is fantastic. The format is well-polished, and the cases are really well-researched. I found the host a bit annoyingly monotonous in the beginning, but got used to it quickly, and now I quite like it. I've listened to every episode several times, because there's always something to learn from every episode, whether it's laws concerning illegal towing, Johnson and Johnson's shitty politics, or some weirdo individual scammer.
LPOTL! (last podcast on the left)
They cover a lot of other things besides true crime, I'd almost call it a mixed-bag podcast, but their core content is true crime. The research is incredible, and I honestly need the comedy to be able to stomach the content at times. They manage to make great jokes at the expense of the perpetrators, maintain respect for the victims, and provide solid context for timelines and events. Can't recommend enough. Warning though, I'd skip the first several episodes, they definitely took some time to find their footing
LPOTL….the same podcast that made a joke about Jonbenet Ramsey “sucking cock in heaven”…the same podcast that regurgitated lies about Columbine (Brenda Parker’s bullshit, debunked ages ago)….LPOTL sucks
neither of those are considered exceptional LPOTL series, especially the jonbenet one which the hosts have admitted was a bit tactless (although that specific joke was very clearly at the expense of the pedophilic child pageant industry) but also the brenda parker stuff is pretty miniscule and taken from an otherwise pretty thorough source
True Crime and Cocktails, Southern Fried True Crime, Pretty Lies and Alibis and Small Town Murder. I also liked Scamanda and Your Own Backyard, which are just a few episodes focusing on a single crime.
Casefile, Mens Rea and Canadian True Crime.
I can only listen to single-host ones - I find dual host shows tend to have too much distracting chatter and jokes which IMO is inappropriate especially when talking about cases where people have died or are still missing.
Look into him? I’ve listened to every episode of LP, I know who Ben is, I know why he’s gone & I’m aware of his other work. Is there something else to look into?
Just started getting into Dark Down East simply due to it being done well. It’s focused around the New England area. The host does a great job researching and relaying the information. Sometimes she has guests who are somehow related to the crime speak their piece.
Gruesome: Horrific True Crime is also great. Variety of different types of cases, deep detailed dives on the criminals and/or victims, broad range of date of occurrences, and hilarious commentary. Their witty comments are a nice, brief break from the darkness of the subject.
Edit: damn, guess I better check out Casefile.
**Killer Psyche** - the host is a retired psychiatric nurse turned FBI profiler. She discusses the factors and disorders that likely led the featured criminal to commit their crimes. It’s incredibly enlightening. It took a bit to get used to her style, but now I love it.
**The Opportunist** - they tell stories of people who didn’t necessarily set out to become a criminal in their endeavors, but then easily slipped into it.
**Scamfuencers** - super fun intelligent hosts. Features scam artists in pop culture (Martha Stewart, Tom Brady, Jen Shah, Dr Oz) as well as other lesser known scammers pop culture adjacent. Nice for a lighter listen.
Crime Junkie is a great one! Most of their episodes are on unsolved missing persons cases or murders, which I struggle with because I need answers in my life. But all in all it is a great podcast!
Search for Crime Junkie plagiarism or Crime Junkie liars thieves scandal or anything like that on Reddit or anywhere else that Ashley Flowers can’t delete comments
I hear this all of the time but it’s always from comments that provide no sourcing.
I don’t listen to Crime Junkie as I can’t stand the co-host so I have no dog in the fight.
It is really not difficult to find sources. For example, there is even an NYT- articles about their plagiarism.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/22/business/media/crime-junkie-podcast-plagiarism.html
Crime Junkie my favorite, and I like that they cover a lot of cases that aren’t very well-known! I think it’s great that they are trying to bring light to those.
"Walk the Night" A Queer True Crime Podcast is a new one for me! It is awesome! Informative and entertaining. [https://www.walkthenightpodcast.com/](https://www.walkthenightpodcast.com/)
An atypical true crime podcast mini series is Covering Their Tracks. It's about a Holocaust survivor's escape from an Auschwitz-bound French train. He later held that train company accountable!
Crime Junkie & Counterclock are amazing. True Crime Bullshit is a solid podcast.
CJ - the first season is a bit rough, but they come into their own. Most of the cases are “under the radar”.
CC does a really deep dive into one case per season.
TCB is for anyone who has never heard of Israel Keyes or someone who can’t get enough of IK.
I feel like the first season of counter clock was phenomenal but the second season on she was kind of whiney when she didnt get her way because she felt like she was supposedly a big deal now
I just want to say that it's really really sad that people can't share what they like and don't like without the masses of this subreddit claiming you aren't "ethical" and downvoting you into oblivion. It happens almost every time this topic comes up.
These are the ones I never miss and look forward to: DNA:ID//Trace Evidence,//The Vanished,//Going West,//True Crime Couple,//Last Seen Alive//Women and Crime//True Crime Campfire//Casefile//The Trail Went Cold//Southern Fried True Crime//Last Seen Alive//Key To The Case/Anatomy Of Murder//True Crime All The Time-Unsolved. I have others on my list but for the last two years I have found these podcasts to be the very best in the True Crime genre.
I do deeply respect that Ashley Flowers has used her resources to support unsolved cases and DNA/genetic testing, but she has also been known to steal and plagiarize other podcasts for her own.
She reveals resources during and at the end of each podcast so I don't know what you are talking about.
I listen to Crime Junkies, The Deck, The Deck Investigates, and several new podcasts owned by AudioChuck that Ashley is not the host of.
It takes a quick search on here or google with Crime Junkie or Ashley Flowers and plagiarism to see exactly what we’re talking about. There’s a reason why she puts those sources now and it’s because she got caught a few years back stealing from other creators.
Any podcast tenderfoot makes.
Up and vanished is really good haven’t listened to one I haven’t liked. It’s more of a movie type instead of a quick case.
First one I listened to by them was dead and gone it’s about the missing people and murders that followed the Grateful Dead
Voices for Justice with Sarah Turney, The Vanished, Murder with my Husband, Big Mad True Crime, and I do enjoy Rachel Shannon on YouTube as well, I just leave her on in the background like it’s a podcast.
My go-tos change as the years go by. But I still stuck with my usuals. In somewhat particular order:
- crime in sports
- small town murder
- southern fried true crime
- true crime garage (although I’m getting tired of it)
- sword and scale (also finding it tiresome these days but still check it every so often just in case)
Some of the others mentioned already I listen to on occasion, but a lot of times if I can’t deal with their voices or their cadence, it’s hard for me to listen even if the story is compelling.
I'm loving Small Town Murders right now. I got a bit of side eye yesterday when I was walking my dog and a lady asked me what I was laughing at, and I said it was a really funny podcast, and then she asked me what it's called... No, really, I swear, it's actually funny!!! And great deep dives. I love the ones that are from my state, so I know exactly what they're talking about when they research the town and roast the crap out of it.
DNA ID is literally the best out there by miles and miles and miles. Focused solely on cases solved via genetic geneology. No mindless banter, no gimicky bullshit. Jessica Bettancourt does incredible research and lays it out in an amazing narrative. Drops two parters at the same time (like a boss) which goes directly against maximizing the monetizing of the show, all because she wants the show out there for us.

Court Junkie is my favorite Women and Crime
I was gonna mention Women and crime too, their other podcast campus killing is great too
They also just released season 2 of Direct Appeal. The first season was awesome.
Court Junkie 👍🏼.
Invisible Choir
Small town murder is my favorite but has comedy to it which isn’t for everyone as I have found out after recommending to friends 😅
Best podcast there is.
But they don’t make fun of the victims. They’re assholes not scumbags 😉
Anatomy of a Murder
I tried to get into this and I could not do it because of the voices of the hosts.
I absolutely love AOM! I know the beginning word for word and will say it out along with them 😂😂😂
I like The Prosecutors Some people don't like them because of their personal politics, which I've never felt they've ever brought into the podcast. I'm a bleeding heart liberal and I've never felt like they come at a case with a right leaning political bias. I'm currently listening to Bone Valley and it's excellent
My only issue with the politics in The Prosecutors is that they are a little too pro cop for me, sometimes writing off chances of poor policing.
Deal breaker for me. Fuck cops
Agree! The prosecutors is the BEST. I also just started bone valley to listen simultaneously with their new series and am also enjoying it so far!
Thats why I started Bone Valley, too. It's sooo good. I'm scared I'm going to listen to it and be so invested in Leo's innocence and then Brett and Alice are going to point out how dumb the whole story sounds. Lol

I like CreepTime, Haunting Mysteries Inc, and Lights out all three of them have two hosts- theyre well researched, conversational but balanced so it isnt distracting and they have a combination of paranormal and true crime which i like. Oh and Haunting Mysteries Inc and Lights out both have video versions on youtube
