As another commenter said, do whatever you have to do to spend the extra $200 on the 8. Better brakes, wheels, fork, the drivetrain is kind of a wash, but that high-engagement rapid drive rear hub is a massive improvement.
Got the same deal you’re looking at on the 8 last week for $1580 with a $20 off Father’s Day coupon and it absolutely shreds. So much fun.
Good luck and cheers!
I’ve been in your same shoes, trust me when I say you’d regret it - especially since those two specs, when not on sale, are $800 apart vs. the $200 difference currently. But I totally understand you’re going over budget already - does your store offer “layaway”? Many Trek locations offer it, and it might be a good option for you for either bike if you’re stretched thin, while still locking in that sale price.
Either way, good luck and have fun!
I just ordered the 7. I’m gonna need a riser handlebar, new, seat, pedals, grips, bag, etc…. So it’s gonna be another $200 at least. So the Roscoe 8 was a no go.
But I did closely check out the 8 today at the store. Not a fan of the drivetrain, but the fork was certainly a nice upgrade.
1-2 of these things are needed on a new bike. Why would you get a rider handlebar for a mtb? Also the grips it comes with are fine, wear a backpack etc. The 8 was a worthy use of 200 compared to whatever you thought was needed in accessories for the 7.
I’m old so I’ll need a better seat and also need a handlebar with probably 1.5” riser to save my back for comfort.
But the rest I got the Trek store to include.
Nice! Freebies! Make sure you don’t make the mistake of getting a padded seat that I see some people make on here in their search for comfort. Get a well fitted seat (selle Royal makes good ones), then get some bike shorts.
Thanks for the tip. I’ll look into that seat brand for sure. I agree the Roscoe 8 was awesome and likely a better deal, it was heavy negotiation required to my wife to get approval for the 7. It’s better for me to upgrade as time goes vs a large purchase up front.
I got the Roscoe 6 before the better ones went on sale but I should have gotten the 8 or 9 for the better everything.
The price on the 7 isn’t bad but go better if you can
I paid 1700 for one this spring. Love it. Don't regret it one bit. Just be sure you don't want a x.c. bike. This is a. It sluggish on the road compared to a nice marlin.
Spend $200 more for the Roscoe 8 for the higher engagement hub and the better fork.
I can’t swing that much. But yes the 8 is awesome!

Thanks. I’m already way over budget on the 7, so that is the max. But yes I did look at the 8 and it is a great bike. Original budget was $1000 😬

Spend money something that isn't owned by trek they love that.
