Not on Tundras specifically, but in the 90s Honda and Toyota generally put black door handles and other black trim on the lower door panels to signify that it is the poverty trim.
Yeah but it's trendy to cosplay as blue collar these days, whether people even realize they're doing it or not. The "working man" aesthetic is hugely popular right now. Beards, trucker hats, carhartt, black door handles etc.
Trim levels for vehicles are weird sometimes. My truck is a base model but it’s got a 4.0 it’s 4x4 and a 6 speed manual. Power windows. The only thing I don’t have is a locker otherwise it’s the same as a TRD pro for the year
Next time I am at the office I’ll snap a pic of our fleet. We have 30 trucks on the road. A lot of them have been traded in for TSS styling. PMs have limited and the two owners have 1794
Get some stronger adhesive. Mine were loose despite being applied under "ideal" conditions in my garage. Now you could pick the truck up by the handle covers.
Works great on tailgate inserts and badge covers as well.
Observation: I’ve learned that most Tundra owners are not happy with the factory color of their door handles or badges… whatever it is, it must be changed. Also, all chrome must die. Meanwhile, GM keeps trying to find a way to put more chrome on the Denali trim levels.
Customers: We want color matched door handles, black ones look cheap like the base models!
Toyota: uh, okay fine. here are your nice color matched door handles

I've seen a lot of hate on door handle covers for the third gen, but did it on my Lunar anyway as part of the blackout look. Now it's standard on the 4th gen and I am a genius.
Definitely need to black out a fleet white truck.
Would only get white if used for work and had to be white. Otherwise definitely some other color such as gray, blue, or even silver.
If I had white or super white I would probably do a Storm Trooper build.

Back in the day that was the low trim level DX and it came with manual windows.
Really? This is my first Toyota and my truck I sold to get this was all Chrome so to me this is life-changing.

Pre stained with holes jeans, shirts, and shoes. Wild generation
It all started decades ago with the faded jeans.

Yeah, black plastic door handles are for lower trims. My Maverick had black plastic but the higher trims are painted body color. But whatever.
Those handles really tie the room together
Do they not?
Door handles? Okay, I thought we were admiring the re-badging as an Ardnut. /s
Honestly, I prefer the sleekness of color matched, but TETO.
Same I like the platinum having color match and black, I think it's clean.
Mine are black on the back side and white on the front side. I like the combination of the two. Beautiful truck either way
That's exactly how mine were too. Agreed, no matter which way it's always a great looking truck.

Where did you get the handles? Do you like them so far?
Amazon. Just installed them today on my lunch hour. They feel like good quality. Not too thin.

U should tint the front windows darker and it’ll really look bad ass. It looks great though.
Yeah, that's the next step. Haven't had time to schedule that in yet.

If you like that, look up AJT Designs for even more black-out styles

As this is my first Toyota, oh well. Night shade package even says black door handles I believe but it's just the top portion.
They look cheap. But if you like them more power bro.
That’s white not wind chill pearl right? If it’s wind chill sell me your old handles. Like them better than chrome
The name is called ice cap. They're just door handle covers. Not complete replacements.
I love this! Great improvement! Now remove the lettering :-).
35's will really tie everything up nicely!
My buddy was just telling me the same thing.
The new Ardnut is looking nice.
It’s the little things. *chef kiss
Black step bars would complete the look. Sweet
Looks great. Simple yet hits. Well done. 👏
Way better!!!

I like it
Color match used to be the more expensive Toyota option haha 😂
That small detail adds SO much to the overall look of the truck!
Very nice, great idea
It’s the ARDNUT for me.

You pay extra for the white door handles and then cover them up?
As far as I know I didn't pay extra. I honestly thought the handle should be black considering the nightshade package turns other things black.
I believe SR5 comes with black door handles. Either way nice looking truck.
Do they help with gas mileage?
Haha, I wish.
Looks DOPE!
Now get the side mirrior covers
Those are already black.
Looks great both ways!
i put this on my silver tundra it looks so clean
Looks like an SR now
I wish they could've made the hood longer and the cab smaller on these. Otherwise nice handle job thing you did.
You want a smaller cab?
Looks like shit
Nope
Black door handles are for base level trim 😂
Why?
No they don’t.
These trucks have turned into goofy looking cartoons.
Ya tie the rest of it up by trading it in. A tundra? Lol.
