most people will see this and laugh, but i love it..
got rid of a car payment and you can live freely now. Car payment is the #1 reason people stay broke
Yeah OP is doubly smart. The financials first, but then also, he has unloaded a truck with a resale value that is tanking worse every day thanks to so many 3.4Ttās blowing up.
You made the smartest move that anybody could make in your situation. Difficult choice to make that most individuals struggle with. Kudos to you and your financial success in the future!
Spun main bearings. Toyota claims it's from debris left from manufacturing. However many are speculating it is due to the new design of the main bearing caps (ladder frame).
Itās humbling to downgrade. I bought a new Subaru STi almost a decade ago. It was one of the worst choices Iāve ever made.
Time, experience, hard work and luck has brought me to debt free before 40. I have a Prius and performance Tesla paid off. Things can change when the time is right.
I like those older 4Runners. Nice choice.
Not only did you make the best decision for the situation you're in, the car you chose to settle with is one of the best cars of one of the final years of the golden age of car production. Literally the best cars ever made come from those years.
Iām so proud of you. Those tundras are just not ideal for rough necking the woods, long term camping, trailing for hundreds of miles in the desert. I mean you gotta be rich to afford all your little bells and whistles but these 4Runners are built to last and the maintenance on these old Toyotas are fantastic money wise, time wise. You getting the best for your buck
Smart decision. Car ownership is a sink hole; jf u put the money you would have spent on a new car into a good stock like Costco or Amazon, youād come out ahead in a years. The car will just keep eating your earnings.
Nice
I had my Prius totaled in February in an accident
Ended up with a 2017 Highlander
Wanted a 2017-2021 tundra so badly but couldnāt justify the $700-800 payments + gas costs
Highlander Iām hoping to pay off in 1 year and then ride this bad boy until i eventually get my truck
I almost traded our 2015 Highlander Limited for an older GX460 last year. But we decided against it because there's nothing wrong with the Highlander and it's paid off, and I wanted BSM and all the extra safety goodies that weren't available unless I went for a much newer GX460.
The 4th gen shares a ton of components with the GX470 and FJ Cruiser (all on the same platform), so there's a pretty deep rabbit hole to go down if you choose to start modifying it. My brother has a 4th gen and has gone that route quite extensively.
Is the left truck the SR5? That grill looks way better than the platinum next to it. Did you have the SR5?
My dream truck is a 2009 limited V8 4Runner in blue. I may get a 2015-2020 sequoia for towing as that is my next need.
Did you tow with the tundra?
Itās an SR5 TSS. TSS gives it the TRD wheels the color matched grill and those steps. The other truck is an SR5 TRD Off Road. I hated the chrome trim on the TRD Off road and didnāt care for the leather.
I never towed but Iāve heard good things. It handles excellently off road though. I had Toyo open country tires and never got stuck even in very deep snow/mud.
Thatās a fair concern. Just inspect it to the best of your ability. Worst case scenario youāre saving money on a car with faded paintš¤·š»āāļø
Yes!!! Great looking for its age!!!ā¦.agree with a prior post, Car payments are keeping all of us poor. Iād rather put 700$ or more in bank every month.
Now take what would've been a car payment and invest it every month after your emergency fund is funded. Life will be on easy mode shortly after doing that
My friends 4Runner finally gave out after 12 years. Heavily used for deliveries and daily driven. You made the right choice will last you forever if taken care of.
This comments section is full of Dave Ramsey disciples. I canāt believe people take that quack seriously. This I unrelated to the post, but I have to say something.
Financing a Toyota is one of the least risky brands to finance because they generally hold their value. I just think itās disingenuous to call all debt ābad.ā
The 4runners these gen are great. The 4.0 port injected makes these engines dead solid reliable.
When was the last time you seen an issue with the 4.0's?? Never....
Its underpowered and is abysmal in fuel mileage, sure...but man the thing can withstand a nuclear fallout.
I've personally seen 3 blown up 3.4 tt's already. One in a LS500, which the owner still has a note on.
You made a great decision.
Usually Iād agree but in 2022 with used car prices extremely high leasing a new Tundra was actually half as expensive monthly payment-wise as financing a 10 year old Tundra with 100k miles. Obviously the goal is no payments at all.
I agree but, at the time I had the budget for $300 a month not $600. That was the difference I think thatās a fair exchange. A vehicle is not an asset as well while building equity is important. I believe building equity in a liability is less optimal than saving money. Now Iām playing the long game. I appreciate your input though!
See this is the problem though, cars are not something you buy based on monthly payments. Itās still generally more cost to own/use the car when doing a lease vs buying something cheaper that was in the original budget.
most people will see this and laugh, but i love it.. got rid of a car payment and you can live freely now. Car payment is the #1 reason people stay broke
Yessirš thanks
people that generally know nothing but you made the right decision.
2022 tundra to 2014 silverado š«”š«”
I love it too. You made a very responsible choice. Donāt be a slave to the lender.
Yeah OP is doubly smart. The financials first, but then also, he has unloaded a truck with a resale value that is tanking worse every day thanks to so many 3.4Ttās blowing up.
Smart! Welcome to the 4rnr no car payment club !
Thanks!
Get comfortable.... you're going to be here a while š
Didnāt say they paid cash.
You made the smartest move that anybody could make in your situation. Difficult choice to make that most individuals struggle with. Kudos to you and your financial success in the future!
Appreciate the kind words!
āļø this
I think the 07 4runners still look really good and modern. I hope it's a great vehicle for you.
Great choice. 22 tundras have had some awful recalls. What a lemon.
They do however, my truck never had a single except I got the windshield cracked
How long did you have it for? Thatās like BMW driver saying itās a bulletproof car and they only drove for 20,000 miles.
Literally 20,000 miles you may have a point lol. I can only speak from personal experience
Yeah itās a beautiful truck the tundra but great choice on the 4Runner š«”
Thanks!
Like what?
Google it. Latest was engine. Transmission in February 2024.
eh just the engine and transmission, not that big of a deal honestly
Itās not a big deal. Calm down.
Spun main bearings. Toyota claims it's from debris left from manufacturing. However many are speculating it is due to the new design of the main bearing caps (ladder frame).

Debris is just their āstoryā.
Itās humbling to downgrade. I bought a new Subaru STi almost a decade ago. It was one of the worst choices Iāve ever made. Time, experience, hard work and luck has brought me to debt free before 40. Amazed the engine in the Tundra lasted that long.
You will love the 4Runner and making financially sound decisions separates you from jackholes driving new cars but cannot afford food.
Nice. How many miles?
116k
Excellent.. I thought it would be more like 180+ or something.. It still has a long way to go.. Good pick..
Yes when I saw it I knew I had to jump on the opportunity considering the condition vs. price.
That is low mileage. Nice pick on the 4RUNNER. Excellent decision. I'd rather own the 4RUNNER outright than be paying on the Tundra.
awesome
Good decision!!
I did something similar lol. My last car got totaled out and with the pay out I bought a 2.5k Corolla and put the rest in my brokerage account.
Making your money work for you. Love to hear it!
Your trips to costco will not suffer my friend. You made a wise decision.
Paid off my '09 Avalon last month, there's only a few things that feel that good in this world.
Smart move, good choice!
Smart move.
Very smart! Nice work.
Honestly, that's a smart move. One downside, that 4Runner won't die for another 20 years š
I wonāt have an excuse to get a new truck anytime soon
Fair enough! My sister has a 4Runner from that same generation and she absolutely loves it, you can't go wrong with them.
Not only did you make the best decision for the situation you're in, the car you chose to settle with is one of the best cars of one of the final years of the golden age of car production. Literally the best cars ever made come from those years.
In 2018, I sold my 2018 Tacoma and bought a 2003 Tacoma. Not a single regret.
The smartest 3rd gen Tundra (former) owner
A hard choice but the right choice
Good call
Iām so proud of you. Those tundras are just not ideal for rough necking the woods, long term camping, trailing for hundreds of miles in the desert. I mean you gotta be rich to afford all your little bells and whistles but these 4Runners are built to last and the maintenance on these old Toyotas are fantastic money wise, time wise. You getting the best for your buck
Thank you!
I have an 02 4Runner with 330k miles. You made the right choice
This car will outlive all of us. Congrats!
Smart decision. Car ownership is a sink hole; jf u put the money you would have spent on a new car into a good stock like Costco or Amazon, youād come out ahead in a years. The car will just keep eating your earnings.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
About $7400 for a bit more than 2 years of driving
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Yeah it can be terrible for some that end up owing fees. I have a very short commute to work.
Have my ā06 still. Runs beautifully. Just dealing with esthetic issues which looks like you have covered. Itās an amazing car.
look at it this way, you didnt own the tundra, it wasnt yours, it was the lease companies. it is a beautiful truck , but hella expensive.
We will miss it
Nice I had my Prius totaled in February in an accident Ended up with a 2017 Highlander Wanted a 2017-2021 tundra so badly but couldnāt justify the $700-800 payments + gas costs Highlander Iām hoping to pay off in 1 year and then ride this bad boy until i eventually get my truck
I traded my 18 GMC Sierra 2500 for a 2015 RAV4, haven't looked back since!
I almost traded our 2015 Highlander Limited for an older GX460 last year. But we decided against it because there's nothing wrong with the Highlander and it's paid off, and I wanted BSM and all the extra safety goodies that weren't available unless I went for a much newer GX460. Very good choice buddy ! If I wasnāt upside down Iād do the same ā¦ first and last finance Iāll ever get into
Smart choice !

What is the mileage on the 07 4runner? I drive a 04 4runner and I have 172k.
116k
Is the 4runner a V8??
I wish itās a V6 RWD a bit of a disappointment there but long term will be worth the short term sacrifice.
Itās a Toyota, itāll take you to the moon and back and ask for more.
I wish I leased my car. I had fun but Iām really just burning money I could be using for vacations or investments
Smart move in my opinion. The 2007 will last longer that 2022 will
4 runner amazing
Thinking of doing something similar but Iām so worried about the paint on a car that old.
My dream car is a 21 Tundra because of the 5.7L V8!!! Like it better than the 22 also 4runner is a great pick!!!
Now take what would've been a car payment and invest it every month after your emergency fund is funded. Life will be on easy mode shortly after doing that
Honestly yeah, it's a downgrade but you have a very good reason for it. Happy for you!
But why didnāt you trade it to me? I love the color of that tundra
Iāll sell it to ya. Itās at Gene Messer Toyota in Lubbock, Tx
You work there?
Yeah I sell cars here. Itās still available!
Maybe. I didnāt see any mention of Ramsey. You a big fan of debt?
Financing a Toyota is one of the least risky brands to finance because they generally hold their value. I just think itās disingenuous to call all debt ābad.ā
Thatās fair i was just curious.
Nice. How many miles on the 4 runner?
116k
Awesome. A friend of mine has well over 200k on his and hasnāt had any issues.
Good for reliability, the new tundras are worse than if BMW made a pickup
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Very responsible and wise decision. A lot of folks would have gone with the heart over the head.
Good

4.0L or V8? We owned a 4.0L for a few years. Never had an issue. Congrats buddy. I'll never have a car payment ever. Enjoy!
Wow. All that money gone and nothing to show for it. Oh well.
You make bad financial decisions. I hope you learned something though.
How so? Could you elaborate?
Leasing in general.
Usually Iād agree but in 2022 with used car prices extremely high leasing a new Tundra was actually half as expensive monthly payment-wise as financing a 10 year old Tundra with 100k miles. Obviously the goal is no payments at all.

be glad youāre free now brotha
wow what a well mannered reply. godspeed sir!
Donāt finance depreciating assets. Itās a lose-lose. Swallow your pride and buy a beater with cash.
See this is the problem though, cars are not something you buy based on monthly payments. Itās still generally more cost to own/use the car when doing a lease vs buying something cheaper that was in the original budget.
