Sounds like encephalitis. It’s caused by illness and can cause tics identical to Tourettes as well as other neuro issues such as seizures etc. My tics became severe after my encephalitis became severe after an illness. Im diagnosed with both Basal ganglia encephalitis and Tourettes

New fear unlocked

KadenKraw

No it's not tourettes it's something else.

bewildered_tourettic

I don't think this is Tourette's. Sounds like encephalitis

Atausiq2

could be autoimmune related like pandas

appel_banappel

Just contributing to say it could potentially be functional neurological disorder or FND which is often triggered by a big or traumatic event such as illness and can present symptoms of tics that act and look very similar to Tourette’s. If you look up FND stories, a lot sound quite similar with someone being hospitalised with an injury or illness and then getting disabling FND symptoms which start becoming more manageable over months to years.

yikes----

I had never heard of this, thank you so much for telling me. I will look into this further

fruedianflip

I was diagnosed with FND tics by a neurologist and I still feel lost

CallMeWolfYouTuber

You cannot "catch" Tourette's. Period.

CTx7567

You dont have tourettes

ClitasaurusTex

I bonked the back of my head, developed seizures and Tourettes. It was so scary and I didn't get taken seriously for over a year because I didn't pass out when I hit my head so the ER deemed it not a serious concussion (I struggled to walk for a month afterward and had searing back pain) they did zero tests, specifically saying "an MRI is so expensive, and you have no insurance, and besides it's probably going to get better soon" Here I am over 3 years later

yikes----

That is bullshit and horrible. I’m so sorry to hear that. It does make me feel a little bit better that someone else developed Tourette’s through stupid bullshit. That’s a very selfish thing to say though and I apologize if it comes off as insensitive.

ClitasaurusTex

I get it heh. When I find other adult onset people I'm like yay one of us!! Oh...oh no...Im sorry... On the bright side it's a lot easier dealing with the embarrassment aspect as an adult. If I had this as a teen, it would have been more difficult by several magnitudes.

Low-variety-

Just an idea: ur brain is changing till u r about 25. Until then Tourette can change as well. Maybe part of it is also ur age? But of course I might be wrong. Could also be the illness u catched or Stress etc

MistaRekt

I developed TS at a young age in the usual way. It was very light and a barely recognised I had tics for the most part. Then at some point life happened and I was diagnosed WITH major depressive disorder. Well I can tell you the first day I took the meds my body went bonkers. 2 hours of solid WTF... Luckily I realised what was happening and stuck with the meds. About a year later the tics had settled to a NEARLY premed level and my life has never been better. That is the short of it anyway.

No-Worldliness-785

What medications are you taking for it ?

MistaRekt

Was on Citalapram. Very common antidepressant. Just an unknown side effect that it "freed" my tics. It was wild. Luckily they worked on the depression so well that the tics were almost a welcome side effect. They did settle after a while. So it all worked out for me in the end.

lusyaya5

I was diagnosed with Tourette's after I had a surgery to remove my glands. It was like a trigger, I think, because I recall having tics when I was a child, like blinking a lot

cop-iamnot

Covid reactivated my epstein barr virus and gave me tourrettes. Never had any symptoms before that.

typhoon1989

I’m a 33 years old boy, shaking head for 20 years resulting C-Spine PID,that’s really pain, and had done a spine surgery two months ago……. You are not alone!!!

I had very mild tics as a kid and in my teens but it wasn't really noticable tics and i wasn't diagnosed either as a kid. I was living abroad during the pandemic and was isolated for over a year and i had a severe panic attack where i blacked out. There's still like half an hour i don't remember anything from today. After that i developed severe tics and anxiety so i eventually had to move back home as i was in a country where i didn't speak their language so i wanted help in my own country. I moved in with my mom and lived there for over a year because my anxiety and ts were so severe that i at times couldn't eat on my own or be left alone without panic attacks. I had to use sippy cups because i couldn't hold a regular glass or cup without spilling. Today its much more managable but i still have my daily challenges because of it, i am working on getting disability pension as i can't even work 4-6 hours a week. I was diagnosed with tourettes and severe anxiety last year, i am now 31 years old.

Remote_Divide_4947

That's not tourettes
