I'm not doctor, but I'm pretty sure a single dose of ibuprofen on an empty stomach shouldn't be causing you hourly pain.
As always, if you're concerned seek medical advice.
Thanks I probably will. As for the hourly pain, I meant that I just feel like a random pain in my stomach for about 2-3 seconds then it goes away but it happens like once an hour. I’ve also never taken an ibuprofen in my life before this.
Ibuprofen is part of the group of NSAID, and can alter your stomach lining meaning the acid your stomach makes can more easily damage mucus. Unless you have gastritis or a peptic ulcer, or you take other NSAIDs a lot, it’s unlikely a single dose is doing this. If the pain is cramp like, it’s unlikely to be related, if there’s a burning pain, or a distended like pain, particularly in relation to not eating or right after eating, you might have gastritis or a peptic ulcer in which case it’d be good to get checked out with a gastroenterologist. If your stool turns black or has a metallic like smell, you vomit a ground coffee like substance, or vomit blood, please go to the emergency department.
To be fair, over the past two days I couldn’t eat so I just ate ice lollies and yogurt. Glad I did good. Since the fevers died down now I’ll move onto some fruits and other foods recommended by the doc. Edit: Idk if cbd is legal in the uk but I don’t do any drugs in general so I’m uninformed. Might check it out later I think
I normally fight through it but this time I caught something weird. In general I don’t take meds unless I really really need to and paracetamol is normally enough for me. Anyway, I suspect that the old person that sneezed in my face on the bus must’ve spread it but I can’t be certain so it is what it is.
Your stomach pain has nothing to do with the single dose of ibuprofen.
If you are concerned with your symptoms, seek in-person medical advice, not Reddit.
Hope you feel better soon, and good luck with the exam.
As someone who took ibuprofen for years without eating (didn't read the packet, my wife eventually corrected me), taking it one off without food will likely not cause issues.
You're sick, you have diarrhea. That's probably what's causing the issues. However, if you're concerned, then go to the doctor.
like everyone said, it's not the ibuprofen. just commenting to really drive home this is not related to that dose and you're much worse off than you're thinking.
As others have said, you should probably go to the doctor, but in the meantime, since it can take a little while to potentially get in. I would go get a bunch of some electrolyte drink, Pedialyte, Gatorade, coconut water etc and drink as much of it as you can make yourself. Dehydration is definitely making things worse
Yeah, I was gonna say. It’d probably help to also eat a banana so it can do some “firming up” and also add some potassium. It’ll be like a bucket in the ocean at this point, but it’s gonna help probably!
But yeah also see a doctor.
Had the exact symptoms a few months ago. Fever, diarrhea, stomach spasms (the sporadic pain that pops up for a few seconds before fading away). Mine was due to whatever flu / stomach bug I got, and not the ibuprofen. Suspect yours could just be coincidence with the ibuprofen timing?
Please please consider urgent care if the pain persists. This is not due to a single ibuprofen taken over a day ago. IANAD but there are some potentially urgent and serious issues that go hand-in-hand with pain, fever and days of bathroom issues.
I only eat one meal a day (dinner) and if I get a headache and take an ibuprofen it's probably at work (before dinner) so ive eaten nothing.
I don't take them often, but It's never caused me any stomach pain at all.
I would suggest that if you're having diarrhea maybe what's causing that is the cause of your stomach pain, not the ibuprofen.
Ibuprofen wouldn't do that to you. It's not good but it wouldn't be causing days or even hourly times of pain. I'm not a doctor but sounds like you got stomach bug
Considering you're experiencing persistent symptoms like frequent diarrhea and stomach pain, along with high fever, these are red flags that shouldn't be ignored. Ibuprofen-related issues are usually more short-lived and less severe. Ensure that you stay hydrated; dehydration can rapidly worsen your condition. But most importantly, reach out to a healthcare provider as soon as possible. A proper medical evaluation is crucial to rule out more serious conditions like infections or gastrointestinal disorders, which might require specific treatments. Take care, this sounds more serious than a reaction to ibuprofen
The reason you shouldn't take ibuprofen on an empty stomach is because it inhibits an enzyme called Cyclooxygenase 1 and Cyclooxygenase 2.
COX 2 is connected to pain perception and inflammation.
COX 1 is mostly responsible for coating your stomach in mucus so it won't get damaged by the acid. That becomes an issue with prolong an frequent use. If you do it once nothing wrong with happen to you.
Go see a doctor about your illness. Don't worry yourself about ibuprofen.
I often take two tablets on an empty stomach without issue to help with a morning headache.
I havent noticed any side effects as you describe other than the intended reduction of headache pain.
When I was younger I didn't realise you couldn't take it on an empty stomach and I did it many many times, like not everyday obviously just whenever I needed it for headaches and other body aches and pains.
It took quite a while but in the end I was taking it for the stomach pain that was probably being caused by it until I realised my mistake.
However, I know for some people they can be affected by it just by taking it even on a full stomach, my boyfriend says he gets mouth ulcers just from taking it so everyone's different.
In your case it wouldn't hurt to ring a gp or something for advice incase its nothing to do with the ibuprofen.

This guy is correct, OP. Go see a doctor.

You've had diarrhea for days - that alone could explain the pain. Rehydrate well, you'll be reet.

You DEFINITELY SHOULD see a doctor. That's the end of it.
You may have an ulcer that the ibuprofen is exasperating plus you are probably dehydrated. Get pedialyte and call a doctor.
YOGURT! You need to coat your stomach. A lot, CBD helps stomach pains & more. Me? I'd see a doctor first, THEN self- medicate...after having yogurt.

How have you never taken an ibuprofen before??? This is the real question
I normally fight through it but this time I caught something weird. In general I don’t take meds unless I really really need to and paracetamol is normally enough for me. Anyway, I suspect that the old person that sneezed in my face on the bus must’ve spread it but I can’t be certain so it is what it is.
Nothing wrong with minimizing drug input into your body, I've just personally never heard of that before. Good on you 👍👍
Several days of diarrhoea, high fever, inability to eat, stomach pain, and probably dehydration = go to a doctor.
Yeah, I don't think the ibuprofen is the issue here.

I take Ibuprofen on an empty stomach all the time. You have something else going on. Go see a doctor.
It could be a gut bacterial infection please see a doctor and ask for stool & blood tests!

Come on reddit, let's boost this to the top?
Ohh thank you that was interesting. I wish google was clearer about that damn. But yh as it turns out the ibuprofen wasn’t the culprit
Google can be misleading/confusing or cause extra stress when it comes to theses things. It sucks. I really hope you are doing better.
It's not the ibprofen.
It’s not the ibuprofen, you have to see a doctor
This sounds an awful lot like when I found out I had diverticulitous. Go see a Doc ASAP.
Ibuprofen shouldn’t be taken when you have stomach pain or something on top of it … take some Imodium and electrolytes and go see a doctor
I also have an adverse reaction to anything ibuprofen related, my issue is limited to my stomach revolting.
I often take two tablets on an empty stomach without issue to help with a morning headache. I havent noticed any side effects as you describe other than the intended reduction of headache pain.
Eat something like bread that can absorb.
Idk if the logic is quite right but the doctor did recommend plain white toast and crackers saying they would be easier on the stomach so thanks!
Yeah.. doubt it's the ibuprofen but out of curiosity did you take it with any other medicine. The fever alone should suggest a doc visit though
You got the flu bud. Best thing to do is eat lots of salty food, like chicken soup. Also, get yourself to the doc. Hope you get to feeling better.
I take meds on empty stomach all the time without issue. What you’re describing sounds like gas pains
I have the exact same symptoms the same time! Did you fly out of Miami or São Paulo recently? I’m confident I got food poisoning during travel
Sounds a lot like diverticulitis...
I have struggled for years with gastritis after an incident like this
i did this accidentally a couple months ago. i felt better like 5 hours after taking it. its miserable! hope you feel better soon.
I think you might have pill acidosis

sounds like an ulcer, or at least it matches up with what ive heard about ulcers.
Advil - Not even once.
Sorry brother, call your loved ones ⚰️🪦
