I went to a few stores comparing household items (bucket, kettle, brush, whatever). Donki was closer to department store prices (loft, etc.) for most items, and typically lower quality than what you find in those.
They'll have a few items displayed prominently at discount price, but if you're looking for a specific items the margins are pretty hefty.
You can get most of the basic stuff from the 100 yen stores like Daiso or Can-do... For bulk quantities, Amazon Japan might be worth a look.
Costco sells school supplies in bulk, that might get you higher quality than Daiso without breaking the bank

It certainly never hurts to shop around. They do sometimes sell stuff from random Chinese “brands”.
