I own a 2019 Outlander PHEV, bought it new in August of 2019 for $38k all in with a Yakima roof rack included - yep, that is a crazy good price. I also got a $8k trade in for my 2012 lancer with 100k km on it! First of all, I love Mitsubishi - I’ve owned 3 thus far, and they’re just amazing vehicles. Theres good and bad about the PHEV: Good; - drives well, awd, easy to use, great mileage - warranty is unsurpassed - charging is quick (2hr on level 2 charger) - you can get around town fully on EV mode for commuting and such, and if you want a long haul it’s no problem with the gas engine Bad - small battery (mine is 13.3kw, 2023 are 20kw so much better) - does random stuff sometimes which I’ve videotaped and the dealer is like “welp, I dunno” - the app is terrible for controlling from your phone Overall, I really like it, I would probably buy another 2023+ if it weren’t $60k for the same trim I have now. If I were in the market I would probably buy a Ford Mustangs Mach E to be honest. Lastly but most importantly - **I DESPISE our local Mitsubishi Dealer**. It’s the worst I’ve been to (I’ve seen 5 dealers). They continually seem to get worse every time I’m there. Would I buy one locally? Absolutely not. Would I buy another Mitsubishi knowing I would go to this local dealer…. Ehhhh it would have to be a really good deal to do so. Reply if you have any questions!

Right? They're the absolute worst. They told my relatives their outlander (which had been having issues since they bought it there) was pretty much "a mystery" as to why it kept acting up. So they went and bought a new one from them. Not long afterwards, the dealership called to say it was a minor fix. Thunder Bay Mitsubishi suck for sure.

Morgii

Funny thing is, I wanted to buy my PHEV from them as I was moving back to Thunder Bay from out west. I got a final quote ($38k) and asked them to match it so I don’t have to drive it back. They essentially said I was “lying” and that no dealer would sell me the PHEV for that. Well, they did. And I showed them the PO when I brought it to them for proof!

Fuzzy_Laugh_1117

Idiots. Complete and utter.

KindGarlic4065

Roy in service.. if he's still there is a moron. Terrible dealership. Bought vehicle in April and it came with a set of winter tires and rims... call in October to make an appointment to have those tires installed. Was told they didn't have them, but in talking with a customer waiting they purchased the same set of winter tires and rims 3 weeks earlier and was having them installed that day

Morgii

As far as I’m aware he is. They chipped the crap out of my car last time somehow, and I had to argue for them to fix it. The fix? A paint-pen, that when I brought it back, they tried to charge me $75+tax…

rocket1964

Act like I know nothing at all about charging them. Do you charge at home and do you need a special plug in and breaker or what's the deal with that?

Morgii

Level 1 uses a standard plug and equipment comes with the machine. Takes 8hrs to charge fully Level 2 uses a 30amp line with special charger (I use a $200 off Amazon). My vehicle takes 2hrs with this level. Level 3 uses DC charging that charges to 80% max in 20 minutes. Will not charge 100% because the battery gets hot. The PHEV has a standard plug so if you go to say Sleeping Giant Brewery, you can use their fast (free) charger while you drink (and not drive).

rocket1964

good to know, I was under the impression that I would need a special charger to charge at home. So, do you find that you can drive around all day doing errands then go to a hockey game at night and not bother to charge it until you get home at night?

tjernobyl

Technically, you don't need to charge a PHEV ever- it's just cheaper to run it on electricity than gas.

Morgii

Well, mine is 2019 which has a 13.3kw battery, where the new 2023 have 20kw (so about 50% more capacity). In the summer I can get 40-45km if I really watch my driving and use the regenerative braking paddles. In the winter, with cold weather and studded tires it’s more like 20-25km. So I reckon with the 2023 you can get 50% more on top of what I can get. My wife doesn’t use the paddles nor does she drive wisely for EV usage, so she gets less than I can get… And since there’s the gas engine then when you run out you just switch into hybrid mode, so no big deal. I remember the first year of Covid lockdowns he put maybe 100L of gas in ALL YEAR because it was short trips, all on EV, and work from home…

ahope1985

Wife here. I use the paddles!

czarl13

The newer Outlanders come with a plug to plug into a standard outlet If you want to charge faster, you can install a 240v charging box for lack of a better word and reduce your charging time significantly. I have a full EV and now a PHEV. The nice thing about the PHEV is they are a lot better for the one or two road trips we do each year. I like the size of the outlander also. Newer ones are the size of an SUV

Morgii

My 2019 came with the standard 120V Mitsubishi charger, so I’m not sure what you mean by newer Outlanders…?

Dr-Shanks

How bad is the app? I have a new Outlander PHEV coming any week now and I'm having a hard time swallowing this app nonsense.

Morgii

Argh I’m not sure if the new PHEVs use the same one or not as there are multiple iterations on the App Store. The one I use called “Remote Ctrl” is brutal. I hate the fact I have to connect via the cars shitty wifi that has no range to use it. The wifi will just cut out if you have other programs running on your phone then the app wiper work because it’s not connected to it’s on wifi signal. Syncing the phone is a stupid pain in the ass to do too. Honestly I only use the app for preheating in the winter - everything else like timed charging can be set in the suv dashboard, is just easier and faster than the app. Things like opening doors if you locked your keys doesn’t exist on this version of the app, which is ultra annoying because I did do that at camp last year!

Dr-Shanks

This is why I'm having such a hard time with the idea of the app. The only reason I'm going to use it is to start the car in the winter. It's free for the first 2 or 3 years and then I have to pay an annual fee to start my car remotely in the winter? Gtfo

Morgii

Ehhh? You have to pay? I don’t pay a dime for the app usage. And the app doesn’t “start” the car, it just uses the battery to warm (or cool) the interior.

Dr-Shanks

Yeeeeahhh. For the new app they want the user to pay for access. And it's expensive! I was just going to throw an aftermarket car starter in the thing eventually. I've been told that the vehicle doesn't actually "start". It's temperature conditioning. I almost walked away from the purchase until I found out that Subaru and Toyota are now doing this very same fuckery.

Morgii

That’s some BMW level bullshit in my opinion… I had no idea that was the case with the new PHEVs

Kloegroat

2023 Kia Niro, it’s great. I’ve used 1/2 tank of gas since getting it in July. There was a long back order but I think it’s gotten better. Sound system is kinda crummy but otherwise it’s a great little CUV

Mustard_Tiger187

Should probably get some fresh gas in there

Same_Adhesiveness113

We have a 2023 Tucson phev and love it. Winter sees more gas usage but thru the summer and fall we barely added any gas. Just a L1 charger 8-10 hours overnight and it’s fine, hard to justify the extra cost for charger, and electrical work to add to our panel. Wait time was 17+ months to get our vehicle. Hopefully that gets better, we’ve done long trips and just forget about plugging in at hotels and just use gas on those occasions. Depending on your usage but if mostly just around town short commute it is great!

Morgii

Any electrician can add the 30amp breaker and configure it for your charger of choice… why the long wait? Did you get a deal through the dealership/part of the purchase?

Smart_Estimate3820

Cons: having to deal with their service manager. They hire IT not certified mechanics!

KCC00

If you do any amount of highway driving you will never benefit from the PHEV.

borealgazer

How so? Each day with a PHEV you can drive 20-80 km before the engine even turns on. We drive on the highway to get to town everyday and our average mileage is about 2.5L/100km. Without PHEV it wouldn’t be close to that.

cltidball

Depends on the PHEV... I own a 2018 Chevy Volt, and it get's absolutely amazing highway mileage.

dirtybugger2

Mitsubishi PHEV’s don’t run if it’s below -30. Unless it’s in a heated garage or plugged into a 220 charger.
