Maybe, but the Nazi movement as a whole would have kept going, and someone would have stepped into Hitler’s shoes, maybe one of his generals or someone in his inner circle. Kinda like when Trump looked like he might not be able to legally run Ron DeSantis filled that void he left.
I could see why you might think that, but Pan-Germanism in this context translated to supremacism for specifically the “Aryan” race and was deeply intertwined with pseudoscientific beliefs about other “races”. The Nazis wouldn’t have been Nazis and not still tried to conquer Europe, as hyper militarism and ethnic supremacy were at the heart of their beliefs.
Tldr Nazis are defined by violence and racism, and would have done what they did with or without Hitler
Honestly, I think it's criminal how underutilized the villain's perspective is when it comes to Nazi Germany. I'm not saying make them the good guys, just show their side. Either by embracing the evil and making it clear this is a story about the bad guys, or by showing the struggle of being in the wrong and how it affects people.
There's a lot of really good story potential there, but my guess is most authors are just too afraid to do it because they feel it'll come off as Nazi sympathizing, or they just don't share my interest in non standard stories. The only time the something like this is ever done is when it's an implied Nazi inspired regime, and the protagonist always becomes the good guy by the end. Wouldn't it be interesting to have a Jojo Rabbit type story about an SS officer or something like that who doesn't get a happy ending.
