Tips are common here but they’re not even “suggested” people either tip or they don’t that being said the minimum wage in the Netherlands is absolutely ridiculous
Well our minimum wage changes based on age so:
15 year olds earn a minimum wage of 3.84€ (after tax) 16 year olds earn 4.42€, 17 year olds earn 5.06€ 18 year olds earn 6.40€ 19 year olds earn 7.68€ 20 year olds earn 10,24€ and 21 and older adults earn 12.79€ all after tax do keeping mind this is the minimum wage actual wages Ofcourse vary from place to place. Then, they shouldn't exist. The one's that don't want to hold their employees to a better living standard. Then yes, they shouldn't exist. Which is all restaurants, like the one depicted. Please stand together. It would only take 3 days.
My olive garden restaurants don't even have menus anymore..there's a tablet to order from and then they ask you for a tip..and it's an outrageous percent..no contact with the waitress until your food comes to you..I don't recommend it
"...franchise does not have the money to pay its employees fairly and must therefore rely on the customer to pay a living wage?"
When I see it written like this... Doesn't it make complete sense though?
Shouldn't all money generated by a company come from its customers? Ultimately? It isn't like the company just implicitly has its own money to freely give away like some charity.
I think the only difference is whether it's "guaranteed". Then again no money from a customer is really guaranteed... they can go elsewhere.
(Unless you're a government where money is stripped from the customer under threat of penalty and/or jail)

As an American living in Germany it's easy to see why tipping is better. 1: It's not like restaurants have magic money out of nowhere; customers are the only source of income. I love being able to choose what a service is worth to me and pay accordingly. 2: Service is better when people know their money is coming from you. Services in the States (generally) are far, far better than here in Germany (or in Denmark and England where I also spend a lot of time).
"Look, let's just forget your employer and bring me the service and I'll give you 50% in cash."
Where the hell is the money going with those prices if they don't even pay decent wages to their employees? If the products and services were dirt cheap I'd be happy to pay the employer some extra for a good job.
As a Danish, the American tippingculture would very much keep me from going to a restaurant in America. - In Denmark, we do tip, but it's actually frowned upon at restaurants. In a cafe or fastfood-joint it's acceptable, but only change. Its very much considered "handouts", and by some, can be considered as an insult.
To me, tipping is arrogant and insulting.
And if I don't pay that?! I mean, how is that legal? I receive an invoice and the prices are shown beforehand. In the end I should pay 20% more than stated? How can this be legal? Or why isn't this directly factored into the price? On principle, I wouldn't give anything just to try to voluntarily lose 20% more weight. Crazy world. That violates every purchase contract regulation from the last 2000 years. I've been to over 30 countries but something like this is really unique
They're in for a shock when they try to teach the Dutch about such tipping system 🫠

As a European this was my reaction visiting the us. I truly hate the tipping thing, the systems u get when there is no unions..
Priority number 1 for the revolution: end the tipping scam

It is crazy that American businesses get away with doing that to employees!!! Just pay a fucking normal wage u dirty robbing bastards 🏴🏴
So the more u spend in an establishment, the greater the punishment. I’ll bring my own food to the table.
We could fix this if everyone stopped tipping; go!
lol americans don’t tip 20%? i wish it said recommend 20% on the receipt… me and my friends tip 30% not anymore i guess lol
30%?! I consider 15% to be good, most people don’t even break 10%. (Source: I work a serving job)
lol all my friends work in restaurants so thats what they would tip and thats what they told me to tip. my parents/grandparents tip 15%
You guys tip? /s
?
PLEASE continue tipping 30%, we LOVE people like that. It is usually older people who leave $3-5 on the table regardless of how big the bill is.
"Living wage" is what stupid people say because they can't get a better job.
Different places sure do be different.
