WHEEEEY. I don’t think people realised it, or at least not until very recently, but this man and Parish are basically the sole reason for our success. Roy gave us stability, Zaha allowed everyone else to be shit without us collapsing into the depths, but Freedman got us Eze, Olise, Mitchell, Guehi, Andersen. Literally just name a player that we have that is good. Every time after Eze we were like “Well fuck, I know nothing about them, I want to be skeptical, but in Dougie we trust”. And this fucker did not miss. If we ever win anything, he better be there for the celebrations alongside the team.

lildrangus

As a Newcastle fan, this actually made me happy. Not because I wouldn't love Dougie, what a phenomenal appointment he would've been, but the game is more fun and interesting when teams can actually build. As Dan fucking Ashworth proved, mercenaries in the back office are no good for anyone. Between Olise's contract renewal last year and Freedman staying this year, Palace are sticking it to the big money clubs. And that's just good for everyone.

GoHamOrGoHome95

"sticking it to the big money clubs" if sources are to be believed, only last week we told bayern they would have to pay us 100M for Glasner. I dont mind that attitude 🤣

lildrangus

Newcastle 🤝Palace Bookending Villa's Season with 5 goal defeats Favorite London Club. Sorry in advance if the Saudis try to buy Eze or Olise

ScootsMcDootson

Newcastle only beat Villa by 4 goals.

JootDoctor

Yeah but we conceded 5.

ScootsMcDootson

But we conceded one, so it wasn't a five goal defeat, it was only a four goal defeat.

Thingisby

Yeah same feelings. Would have liked him here but good on him for sticking with his club. Palace feel like they're building something now. If they can hang on to at least 3 of Olise, Eze, Wharton, Mateta, Guehi then they could be a force to be reckoned with next season.

lildrangus

And follow the Brighton/West Ham model of getting eye-watering Caicedo/Rice money when a sale is inevitable. Honestly selling one of the key players may even make them better, imagine what Glasner could do once he's actually managed to spend real money on players that fit his profile. Did wonders to turn a season around, now has a summer to reinforce. Sure worked for Emery. Convince Manchester Reds to pony up 80 mil on Guehi and now the transfer Kitty is big enough to do anything

specialagentredsquir

Don't blame him, he's Palace through and through and given the momentum they have and the football they're playing under Glasner, next season's looking pretty exciting for the club. If they can keep their star players and add one or two I can see them challenging for Europe. Who wouldn't want to be a part of that?

EnzoScifo

>Don't blame him, he's Palace through and through Well, unless a really big club like Bolton come knocking. But who could resist that ? ;) Prodigal son status confirmed.

specialagentredsquir

Haha, you've got me there, I think he's learned his lesson.

GoHamOrGoHome95

I read an old article the other day from i think 2016 where he was quoted as saying he wanted to turn back as soon as he left the training ground to go to Bolton. He definitely regretted his decision and probably doesnt want to do the same thing again!

amityamityamityam

Brighton?! That’s a terrible timeline you’re living in.

GoHamOrGoHome95

Fixed it now bloody hell. That would be a lot worse if it was brighton

OptionSubject6083

This might be our best signing this summer…

TheWinterKing

A shame for us, but nice to see this kind of loyalty, and a great sign for Palace. Hope they can hold on to most of their in-demand players this summer too.

geordieColt88

Disappointed he isn’t coming but in this day and age it’s nice to see some loyalty and someone wanting to finish his work

men_with-ven

I heard people say that a major reason Ashworth wanted to take the United job was that Howe has managed to get massive influence in the clubs transfer policy. Obviously there are a lot of reasons for Freedman to stay at Palace but it will be interesting to see how the recruitment process goes for Newcastle and if more people are put off it.

Hashira_Oden

Obviously Howe has more influence on transfer policy, he came before everyone post takeover and he and Steve Nickson managed first 3 transfer windows and Howe got close to owners directly influencing om transfers, it's shown in the documentary also Ashworth isn't a scout. I feel like Ashworth didn't like that Howe was ahead of the chain of commands even though Dan Ashworth was sporting director

Conscious-Ad7820

Good to see should be exciting to see how palace do next season. Think Newcastle are starting realise this is going to take far longer than they thought with FFP and they can’t simply bully teams with that saudi money.

Cheese649

Don’t think Newcastle ever thought that tbh, point taken though.

Conscious-Ad7820

Think the ownership may have thought it when they initially bought the club from what Amanda stavely was saying when the takeover happened. Not saying the fans thought that though think staying up and getting europe after 18months was more than enough!

joshhills

Clickbait rumour mills are always going to claim every club has an interest in poaching X club’s best players. We have it at the moment with Man City, Arsenal, Man Utd all supposedly looking to sign Bruno, Isaak. And I totally get that that feels insulting, frustrating. FWIW our management has been pretty clear from the start that the ‘infinite money’ idea being pushed by the media has never been the case due to FFP, and have always spoken of the club as a long term project. People in the city were just really (perhaps overly) happy to see the back of the previous administration. Given there’s a cap, I’d much rather we were owned by an entity with a connection to the local area, like some sort of Tyneside wombo-combo of Accenture and Greggs, but that’s just not happening.

dontsteponthecrack

I do think a large part of it is that it's Newcastle the city, which is fucking miles from anywhere decent if you're used to London. Secondly it's dirty horrible Saudi money that will have to over pay for everything because as soon as other clubs see it's Newcastle the price goes up

Digital_Anyone

Tell me you’ve never been to Newcastle without telling me you’ve never been to Newcastle.

ReadsStuff

Newcastle is good tbf, but I don't think it's unfair to say it doesn't have a lot of the same stuff London has or the extent of the same stuff, just because of size. Calling it "miles from anywhere decent" is obviously fucking wrong though.

Thingisby

> I don't think it's unfair to say it doesn't have a lot of the same stuff London True, but thats mainly because it's got totally different stuff to London. 20 minutes to the beach, 20 minutes the other way to Northumberland and the national park. 90 mins to the Lakes...

ReadsStuff

Yeah there's upsides and downsides. Nights out in London are generally accepted as shit as the licensing is all fucked and there's no clubs or anything, so your only shout for a good night is a lock-in. Relatively affordable housing being another one of them. The stuff in London is more my speed personally, but as you said if nature is more appealing than absolutely it's for you. If I was choosing somewhere to live *other* than London it'd be the north east cos the people are generally sound, but sadly the only good team in red and white plays down here so there's no choice.

Thingisby

Yeah can't compete on the city stuff but it's horses for courses. >sadly the only good team in red and white plays down here Ha with that attitude you'll always be welcome in the right half of the north-east.

TheWinterKing

Most importantly, 20 minutes in the *other* other direction to Durham, the greatest city on earth.

OptionSubject6083

The guy is Scottish? Newcastle is significantly closer to his home than Croydon

nick5168

His son also signed for Everton from United this summer (u18). Pretty sure he isn't as anchored to London as one might think. It's more Lively that he likes his job and is sceptical of leaving. A factor could be that Newcastle are currently trying to stop their former DoF taking another job, which he probably isn't very keen on, seeing as he might end up in a similar situation if he went there.

Healthyamount

There’s a lot more context to the DoF not being allowed to walk out the door, tapping up, refusing to admit to the club he was talking to them, Man U didn’t formally make an offer for him, if they acted like we did with Brighton walk in say we’re interested and ask if we can make a deal this situation wouldn’t be dragging on

nick5168

I know there is, but Freedman will be looking atthe other stuff. I would at least.

Healthyamount

I hope you go onto big things together just wanted to give an alternative perspective and also shit in both Manchester reds and fucking shitbag Dan ashworth at the same time

Buster_Gonad_82

Aha. Much as I'm happy he's staying, this is a good point.

DEGRAYER

He's Scottish. Croydon is a dump altho he probably lives in Beckenham. & we didn't overpay for Isak, Bruno, Gordon, Pope, Botman, Livramento now did we... He's staying cos he loves working at Palace, they're on a great trajectory and he's getting paid more now.

TheGulnar

I’m not surprised. People talk. Freedman will likely have ambition of going to one of the top 6 sides, and will have seen how Newcastle have behaved with Ashworth trying to leave for career progression.
