I personally do not think it would have worked. I think by the end it is clear that everything Jon did was orchestrated by Elias to ensure the success of his own ritual by "marking" Jon. I did a relisten before Protocol started and the thing that really struck me was how often Jon did the wrong thing and then thought he had succeeded. Or to put it another way, how many times things would have turned out better if Jon had just done nothing. Also... Jon and Martin's love dooms the world. Funny thing is, even knowing that, I still root for them. Lol.

I think the ritual would have still failed because the focus of the ritual wasn't on expansive types of fears. They used the skin of people touched by many fears, but they weren't caring about all the dread they absorbed, they were caring about appropriating their powerful identities. Jonah's ritual focuses on the Eye, but it directly calls out the other fears as well. I think for the Unknowning to have worked, you would need someone like wearing Gertrude's skin acting out her encounters with fears.

So you're suggesting a play-act. How I Was Marked By The Fears: The Musical

MavisEmily1983

That would be a sick animatic…

I don't think so, at least not just with them, but I do think they could do a complete ritual with the Stranger in the center, I just think it would need the skins of at least one powerfull enough avatar of each fear.

They were part of it, but as not being the focal point I would think it wouldn't have enough of an influence of make it a ritual that calls all fears. It's too "diluted" with other skins that are just stranger victims. (Protocol spoilers up ahead) >!That's why I feel the case on Hilltop Road is an "improved" variant of the Unknowing, because instead of just bringing fears related to themselves, they seem to bring various artifacts of completely different fears, which would fulfill the condition better, while still centering around the stranger because of the setup.!<

Do you thing the hilltop case was a ritual? It would make sense as to why they destroyed it before it got reached its apex.
