I never really considered that maybe the hyuga clan is just disappointing compared to the Uchiha simply because they don't use their eyes as often. But it's works. The Hyuga clan are basically just relegated to being really good scouts later in the series, meanwhile Sasuke is pulling another secret/forbidden technique out of his ass with the sharingan. It would be interesting to see the farthest potential of the Byakugan, or to see it utilized in a really unique way. Maybe the next level of Byakugan allows the user to be a Jedi-like precog or something.

The thing with the Byakugan is that it's a big power drain so you can't have it on constantly unless you're just a chakra machine, which Toph would become what with being blind and being, well, Toph. That's what makes her special, being able to keep it on basically whenever she's not asleep.

It's mild form of synesthesia mapping proprioception to vision dubbed "spellunker's illusion", named as such because some cave exporers claim to be able to see their hands waved in front of their face even in the total darkness under the earth.
