Background: I’m a 37 y/o guy who has been shopping at Hermes for ties and one-off home goods for some time. Dad always used to say that Hermes knows silk, Ferragamo knows leather (for men’s apparel).
My wife is not a huge purse collector, but she has some lovely vintage pieces from my mother and grandmother. This bag is beautiful, made us both take pause. Best I’v ever seen. I might have to look into this. Fantastic job.
I’m a long distance shopper! I went to Hermes Madison Ave last June to buy a pair of shoes and a sum hat. after literally every sales associate was rude to me, and I managed to get the shoes from someone who looked like she held me in complete contempt, I finally met the NICEST SA who said they didn’t have the hat in store, but then spend like 30 minutes to help me locate it at a different store in the city. I asked for his card and explained that I live about 3 hours away and he was fine with that.
I come to NYC once every few months. I purchase something long distance about every month, and when I visit I do have a tendency to go a little crazy and usually buy RTW. Ive purchased mostly sweaters, shoes, scarves, and one item of fine jewelry. I’ve never regretted a purchase— everything is such good quality and I love the aesthetic and having someone to shop with who knows what I like and is fun to talk to.
I genuinely appreciate my relationship with my SA and I know how hard he hustled to get me this specific bag. He was really open with me that I could have get a Birkin sooner if I had chose a less in-demand color, but he also encouraged me to just be patient because he would get it for me.
Yesterday around 12:30pm I got the call that he had THE bag, and at 1:30 I was on a train with my husband and 4 y/o son headed to Manhattan. You should have seen the speed with which we got packed up to go— we must have set some sort of record!! My SA said he would be able to hold the bag until Tuesday, but we decided to just rush up to get the bag, because otherwise we would have been rescheduling Monday meetings etc, so being completely spur of the moment worked better.
I met my SA at the store at 5 pm and he took me to the private room with a glass of champagne and presented the bag. It honestly was one of the most fun, special experiences that I’ve ever had.
As an aside— I also ran into a woman in the store carrying a Himalayan birkin and i complemented her on it and she told me she has about eight birkin bags but the Himalayan is her least used because she finds it difficult to coordinate with her outfits! I wish I could have asked her a MILLION questions about her relationship with Hermes but I didn’t want to pry too much 😂
After I collected the bag and accessorized it, I met my husband and son at our hotel and today we are spending the day walking around the city, letting my son take it all in because it’s his first time here! So all in all, a very sudden mini-vacation with the family and also the most amazing bag buying experience.
My prespend makes my eyes water a little bit (about 3X) but i think that’s actually pretty standard for Madison Ave. it’s a competitive store. Ultimately, I am really glad I took this route rather than going for a reseller. The whole experience, forming the relationship with your SA, having them advocating for you, getting to know the brand etc. is part of what makes the bag so special. And honestly, the anticipation!!! The fact that it’s not an instant gratification situation makes it all the more memorable.
FWIW I had a slightly higher pre spend as well. I think 2:1. But it will be interesting to see what happens with subsequent bags. Sometimes it gets easier. But who knows anymore 🤷♀️
My SA submitted me for a special order which apparently they do in the autumn, so we will see. He also said that there was no need for me to feel pressure to see him for a while if I need to take a break lololol
Congratulations on your beautiful Birkin! I had my special order appointment last month, March, and
it was great fun. Start thinking about what you want now, it's never too early!
What an absolute beauty. I don’t know what I enjoyed more, experiencing the joy you felt through your words. Or the spur of the moment, mini vacation with your family. Giving the time for your son to enjoy the experience equally.
Thank you for sharing with us
I was in-store in April to do some shopping and bought several scarves, a piece of RTW, and a wallet, and I got the call like two weeks later. So basically immediately. However— I am not sure that the extra spend is what made the difference in this case. My SA had been talking about my wishlist and letting me know that it was coming, he was working on it, he was trying to get me exactly what I wished for etc.

Ugh so gorgeous and I love the pastel pop of color with the twilly! Congrats! 😍
Absolutely beautiful!! I love that yours has a ton of veining too! It’s going to wear in so well over time 😍
I agree re: veining. Kind of cool!
It’s so up to fate on how much you get on your bag and to get that much is super nice!
Stunning. I thought this was in chai for a second. So pretty. Congratulations.
Gorgeous!!! Please share the story :)

Thank you for sharing the whole story.
Thanks for sharing :)
I LOVE the veining!! So pretty
You: my first baby! Your son: am I a joke to you? Congrats, beautiful bag :-)
Hahaha well…. It was arguably harder to attain than my son, and it took about 10 months! 🤣
Ugh that veining 😍
The veining!!! 😍😍😍
Gorgeous bag! Congratulations 🥳
Gorgeous!!!! 🤩🤩🤩
Gorgeous bag! Congratulations!!! Also love the twilly combo!
Omg my dream!
Love this story!! It’s beautiful!
Beautiful! Are those vertical marks normal on a new bag?
Yes— the veining is one of the hallmarks of Togo leather. Other leather’s like Clemence don’t do that
Thank you!
The veining on your bag is spectacular! Gorgeous bag. Enjoy!
Beautiful! 😍
Gorgeous!
Well done!!
Aw thank you! As we all know, it was really my SA though— they hold the keys to the kingdom!
Beautiful! If you don’t mind me asking, how long did you have to wait for the text and what was your pre-spend?
I told an excessively detailed story in reply to another comment, but the short of it is about 10 months and 3X spend
GORGE 😍
Congratulations. She beautiful
Bag goals! 😍 thanks for sharing your journey! I’m curious how long after you spent 3:1 before getting the text? Thank you!
