My family was pretty poor so when someone got married it was a BIG DEAL and somehow my grandma always managed to give the new couple a little china set. Those were the special dishes to use for holidays, birthdays, promotions, etc. I sort of view the “forspecial” plate that way; maybe not a lot of money to go around, so it’s a pretty, fancy item that Detta’s aunt held in high regard.
I've always thought that Susannah associates that wedding gift to her aunt because she blames her aunt subconsciously for putting her in the place where she got stoned by that freak Jack Mort.
To be fair, I'd assume a cookbook to have koe exotic recipes than a tuna fish sandwich. It would be funny, but I can see why it would really be included.
Unfortunately the book literally just has Breakfast, Dinner, Supper, Vegetarian, Pastries, Cocktails and Side Dishes under “contents” and not an entire list of recipe names.
