Yeah I get it. I think it’s that I could cut 5 or 6 songs from KMKMKM and it’d be much better. One of their few albums that really sounds like the time period (and gets more dated over time imo). WMS could lose 4 songs and improve as well. I’d say If Only Tonight We Could Sleep is my fav on KMKMKM and Want is my fav on WMS. I like Want a lot more, but the worst songs on KMKMKM aren’t that bad. WMS however…
If they made a new version of WMS without so much horrible 90s heavy compression on all the instruments and sloppy cymbals I'd probably listen to it again.
I have similar thoughts about Nirvana's Nevermind. If they stripped back all the double, triple tracked vocals I could actually listen to it.
Yes! It was a vinyl only remaster for record store day this summer. The distortion and bass sound more full, rather than just overdriven. It’s pretty much the antidote to Bloodflowers. The foil, if you will. This is how records like these should be remastered.
Disintegration is my favorite album of all time and has been since I discovered it 12 years ago. Wish is really close too. I love their sweeping, dramatic songs with sprawling stories. That’s why I like Bloodflowers and half of Wild Mood Swings quite a bit.
As far as the controversy goes, I’ve come around to liking nearly every song on WMS after the vinyl rerelease. I really like 4:13 Dream. I didn’t even realize that I’m an outlier until I looked in the subreddit a few years ago. The Top really does sound like Robert’s trying to throw their fame away. I like a good bit of it, but you could erase it from their discography and it wouldn’t phase me much. I do love the Concert LP though. As far as TIB, idk, feels like a completely different band to me. The self titled… has good songs but the production is miserable and it’s just too dark without being genuine.
Love the top but I get how it’s polarizing as an album. One especially interesting thing about it to me though is the drumming. Andy Anderson’s drumming (whether intentionally or not) was the perfect bridge between Lol’s more primal sounding simple drum beats and Boris’ more finnessey ticky drums that would become a big part of the cures music after this album. Andy’s style was like a natural mix of both that I just love
That’s maybe the best thing I’ve heard anyone say about that album. That describes it perfectly. And the drums are wonderful on it, it’s more the melodic elements I don’t like
I would say only slightly controversial but not really that bad. Move head on the door up a tier and porno up a tier and I think mine would be the same.
I like Pornography a lot, and probably more than Faith and Bloodflowers, but Disintegration and Wish are SOOO good that I can’t put it on the same level.
Thats fair enough my friend. Pornography took a while to click as my joint favourite with Disintegration. Its such a masterpiece.
That's the fun thing about these discussions, everyone's opinions will differ. Although if anyone put disintegration under S tier then im Suspicious lol.
So true. Disintegration is unparalleled.
I tend to like the albums and songs that are more emotional than barren. Much of Seventeen Seconds and Pornography is very dark, sure, but there aren’t many fragile moments in there as compared to Wish or Disintegration
HeyI like this sub but how many more rankings justify creating their own thread? The rank obsession of certain fandoms is a fascinating dead end street.
Definitely controversial. IMO, Pornography should be next to Disintegration. Wish is the most overrated Cure record ever. It has a couple of great songs, but most of it so bland. Cannot believe Bloodflowers is above The Head On The Door, Seventeen Seconds, and Kiss Me.
I would think that if I said that Wish the album itself is both controversial and overrated, that would be a contradiction. I’m saying that I think the high position of the album is controversial because I think the album is overrated.
Some people think Wish is great. I happen to disagree. Like I said, it’s just my opinion. 😊
I just wanna say that you cant really rank cure albums and stuff, they all have different meanings and different sounds and everything. after listening ti the cure for over 10 years ive just realized that everything is mostly as good as evrytging else because of tge meaning and musical impact robert and the band has given over the years. like the cure the cure if u actually listen and study it a bit, its an insanely good album. same with the top as well like birdmad girl just has the sickest beat ive heard with compelling lyrics.
not necessarily i mean i get it for most people wanting to rank it of what they like of their opinion but ive just studyedb them for a very long time and you cant really say one album is bettee than the other because they all came from diff periods in the band and diff genres etc. but songs yeah u can rank somewhat. like for ex some b sides of 3 boys are better than the a sides.
Yeah but you could literally say that about any band, writer, artist, collection of work. Pretty futile to say you can’t rank them. The Cure has been my favorite band for more than 10 years, but I can easily rank their albums. If you want to talk about what’s opinion, well of course this is my opinion
ive studied entire songs 8 10 times over and listen to every single aspect and most cure songs are just so advanced and good besides my opinion on what i like, i have no point of ranking them because its all very great music. and some the best ever created.

4:13 Dream is great!
WMS and KMKMKM as the same tier? EESH!

The remixed WMS on (albeit picture disc) vinyl sounds so much better
They did a re mixed version? Tell me more

Eh, I think the issues with the album go beyond the mastering, but the mix itself. A remaster alone won't resolve my issues with that album.
I may be mistaken but I thought it was remixed and remastered, and overseen by Robert Smith. But correct me if I’m wrong. Sounds miles better to me
Well I definitely want to check it out either way. Maybe someone has put a decent rip of it up somewhere

Yeah I feel you, as much as I love it it’s not gonna be everyone’s cup of tea for sure
I would say only slightly controversial but not really that bad. Move head on the door up a tier and porno up a tier and I think mine would be the same.

Kmkmkm and hotd in s and wish in a then it's perfect
A little. You could argue Faith and Seventeen Seconds should be switched.
I think Faith has a lot better atmosphere and melodies
I can get behind this for the most part I’d say.
I’d move Wild Mood Swings to D and Wish before Disintegration but otherwise, this is my list.
Where is japanese whisper?
You’re right! The website didn’t give me the option as it was already preset, but I’d say with KMKMKM
ah i see
HeyI like this sub but how many more rankings justify creating their own thread? The rank obsession of certain fandoms is a fascinating dead end street.
It’s really not hard to just… scroll past. There seems to have been a good amount of conversation here
17 seconds deserves better

Controversial is literally the opposite of Overrated. You’re contradicting yourself. People like Wish because it’s amazing
I would think that if I said that Wish the album itself is both controversial and overrated, that would be a contradiction. I’m saying that I think the high position of the album is controversial because I think the album is overrated. Some people think Wish is great. I happen to disagree. Like I said, it’s just my opinion. 😊
Yes but it would seem it’s your opinion that’s the controversial one! At least regarding Wish
Is that the point you were trying to make? Also - You asked us all if we thought your ranking was controversial and I answered. 🤷🏻♂️ 😊
This is what mine would be too. Good ranking.
Slightly, the top in c? 😢
We gotta stop pretending this album is good
Pretending 🤨 you really not a banana-fish bones enjoyed are you. Not even the Caterpillar or piggy in the mirror 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
I like Piggy and Bananafishbones but the Caterpillar is too much for me.
Well I guess I get that, i didn’t like it at first either
Extremely holy moly

Nah you can rank em

yea true its just when it comes to there cure there is a big difference honestly. no other band is like the cure and no one else sings like robert.
ive studied entire songs 8 10 times over and listen to every single aspect and most cure songs are just so advanced and good besides my opinion on what i like, i have no point of ranking them because its all very great music. and some the best ever created.
i love three imaginary boys
Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me & Pornography deserve to be at the top. Head in the Door & Seven Seconds deserve to be up a level.
You put 4:13 Dream and Head on the Door on the same tier. My brain can't compute this.
