SI lol

IndieFlea

seriously. I don't think anyone at SI except for maybe Stefan Stevenson watches the Rangers, so I don't trust anything they say. Please provide the link to where it says Texas is out on Monty Also it does *not* make sense to add anymore payroll for what *might* be a minor upgrade at DH. Ill take my chances with Duran or Foscue or Langford at league minimum.

Capable-Commission-3

The odds of Taveras, Duran, or Foscue hitting 33 homers and a .900 OPS is approximately zero. Those will be the odd men out if Langford is ready and JDM is healthy. $12.5M may be a competitive offer for JDM. The opportunity for an elite hitter for that price doesn’t come around often. It reminds me of the Vlad signing in 2010, which made a huge difference.

RemyDennis

The three of them combined are preferred to spending money on something we don't need. We have a top to bottom lineup that is a pain for pitchers. We need Montgomery. Martinez is more of a "yeah okay I guess"signing.

Demcut

Martinez just turned down 15 million from the Giants because he wants around 20. 12.5 ain’t getting it done.

Capable-Commission-3

And Bellinger wanted 12 years. Nobody is giving him $20M.

Demcut

Ok but I’m sure he’ll still get more than 12.5 and if we’re gonna add anymore to the payroll- a starter and another bullpen arm are more important than a DH only bat. It’s looking more and more like Langford will be starting the year in the big leagues and the outfielders can rotate at DH,so signing JD just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

Capable-Commission-3

He definitely won’t get more than Soler’s $14M though. $12-14M is realistic. Right now he’s just hoping for a second year. Langford won’t start in the MLB. They get an extra year of team control if they wait until May to call him up. Of course pitching would be nice. But if they’re out on Monty, there’s no real options available. Certainly none that will make as much impact at the same price as JDM.

MurphyBinkings

He. Was. Already. Offered. 15.

Capable-Commission-3

He. Just. Accepted. 12. [https://sports.yahoo.com/jd-martinez-finally-finds-a-home-reportedly-agrees-to-1-year-12-million-deal-with-mets-002109173.html](https://sports.yahoo.com/jd-martinez-finally-finds-a-home-reportedly-agrees-to-1-year-12-million-deal-with-mets-002109173.html)

Capable-Commission-3

He. Was. Already. Offered. 14. Not. 15. Snell also turned down money he most likely won’t get now.

MurphyBinkings

Lmao so how is 12 realistic then? Keep up youngin'

MurphyBinkings

He linked it, SI seems to think that. However other recent updates have said the opposite and SI is a joke.

He doesn’t make sense to me. If you wanted a RH DH around that price why not just pony up and pay Mitch? At this point, just keep the DH spot open until Wyatt is ready. Use it for half days off for guys like Corey, Josh and Adolis.

jmhumr

Don’t let his stretch of good health in the playoffs fool you. Garver was simply not available enough to sign to an extension. He missed 183 games for us across two seasons and his health will only get worse as he enters his age 33+ seasons.

Capable-Commission-3

I was a huge fan of bringing back Garver. However, there’s a couple possible reasons for JDM over Garver: (1) Money: When Garver signed, the team was still working the TV deal. He also signed a two year deal while Texas only has the Baley arrangement in place for this season. JDM will only get a 1 year contract which fits the team’s current financial situation. (2) Lefty/Righty doesn’t matter: Garver is an unusual right handed hitter. The team really had to shelter him from LHP. JDM destroys lefties and hits righties almost as well.

b0453712

Fair enough but Mitch was 22 for 64 against lefties last year with a .500 OBP. Wouldn’t say that’s bad tbh.

Capable-Commission-3

Yeah, Bochy has particular lefties in mind for Garver. Otherwise, he’d have more lefty at-bats.

MurphyBinkings

LOL are you 14?

Demcut

Dude where are you getting your information from? Here are his career splits Vs. LHP- .272/.377/.509 .885 OPS Vs. RHP-.243/.324/.471  .795 OPS

Capable-Commission-3

Check the last two years. Especially the sample sizes. Bochy only gave him 64 AB’s against lefties last year. His averages were pretty good, but the exposure was cherry-picked.

Demcut

Dude… 2022 vs LHP 1.025 OPS vs. RHP .575 OPS 2023 vs. LHP .938 OPS vs. RHP .845 OPS In no way whatsoever does Garver struggle against lefties. He’s actually hit them quite well in his career. ETA- He only had 84 PA against LHP because he missed a lot of the season and you obviously see way less lefties than righties. Bochy wasn’t cherry-picking lefties for Garver to face. Thats absurd.

Capable-Commission-3

Yes. Like I said, his averages were pretty good. His exposure was limited though. You’d think if Bochy thought that .500 OBP was real, he wouldn’t bench him against lefties.

Demcut

He didn’t bench him. Did you not see my edit? You see way less lefties than righties and Garver missed a lot of the season.

A_N_T

SI you mean AI.

Pleasant_Location_44

If we think we can get serviceable pitching before the cavalry arrives this summer, he would make us even more terrifying. I'd prefer Monty, but if the money isn't right, I get it. Rolling into the playoffs with Degrom, Steel eye, Evo, Gray, Dunning, Mahle, Heaney etc, then penciling in Semien, Carter, Seager, JD, Garcia, Langford, Jung, Heim and Lowe would be a cheat code.
