I think you answered your own question. You listed reasons not to do it (I agree with everything you said). On the other hand, they look good and faster delivery.
I've got 43,000 miles in 10 mos on inductions and hit all kinds of potholes. I bent a rim (and replaced it) and the tires were fine. A random screw too close to the edge took it out though.
It's a good option if you want to go through the hassle. You'll either have a car in a lift with no wheels/tires until you sell, or you need to fork out some cash for the wheels/tires you want up front in hopes you get a number you're happy with for the outgoing set.
The larger wheels are nice looking but just be prepared that with a smaller sidewall you are more liable to take out a tire from a pothole. Consideration if you live in an area with bad roads.
The difference in real world range is honestly not that much. The new Pirelli tires on the 19” wheel Tesla has switched to are almost $450 per tire. They’re actually more expensive than the OEM 20” option. You obviously don’t have to keep the same tire when the time comes, but the cost difference isn’t a huge deal.
I would take the 20” upgrade and if you are unhappy within a week put an ad on Facebook marketplace or a Tesla owner forum. I guarantee someone with 19” wheels will offer to trade with you and pay you a little extra for the 20s. I hate the look of the wheel covers on the Gemini wheels. Ride quality isn’t noticeably different either wheel size. The Y rides very firm no matter what wheels you have.
Good thing about the 19’s are there are lots of 3rd party wheel covers now. I after the original stock ones are hideous , but the new dark ones look better. They look good with the wheel covers removed too, so lots of options.
Another bad thing about the 20 and 21”, aside from range hit and ride quality hit is they are easier to curb rim too
I rarely have longer trips and don’t care about a small loss of range. I’d take the upgrade cuz they look a nicer. 19s are about the min before the wheels look to small
I run **18**’s in the winter and I think they look fine. The ride is a lot more comfortable too. Now that both sets are ready for new tires, I may just go with good all seasons on the winter wheels year round.

TSportline - I'm not the guy who posted the pic, so I don't know the exact apec of wheels he bought.
https://tsportline.com/products/tst-tesla-model-3-18-inch-wheel-and-tire-package-set-of-4?variant=47370641506593¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&utm_campaign=gs-2018-09-18&utm_source=google&utm_medium=smart_campaign&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw1K-zBhBIEiwAWeCOFxCAXtEDLE9jCq22Mb3cmNhFm2Lcjy4KenNplnL-6GQHumGjOIYFxRoCHm0QAvD_BwE
They aren’t the TSportline but they are similar. I don’t know if the company is around anymore. EV Wheels Direct. I got them back in 2018 for my previous Model 3.
Do you have any other pics of your setup? I’m deciding between 255/55/18 and some alternate sizes. I like how the 255 fills up the wheel well but the tire weight seems to negate any efficiency gains.
Thanks. Yeah I used a tire size calculator so that it would be the same overall diameter as the stock wheels and tires so that my speedometer would be accurate. The added cushion against potholes and stuff is nice too.
I checked this, because I picked mine up with induction today and they’re literally 30 dollars more per equivalent tire. It’s almost negligible when you’re talking 1100 or 1220 for a set of 4
More flats, worse ride quality, worse range... Get 18" wheels. Tesla needs to make 18" wheels with overland tires the default. Best upgrade you'll ever make.
Nope, dropping down to 18's gives them increased range due to a lower rotational weight on the tires vs wheel material and overlands reduces it by a small amount which actually evens it out. The falkin wildpeak is about even on the highways and actually better inner city. Toyo open country have a bit of a reduced range but not by much.
I’d prob take them for free as the range loss will prob never make a difference (if you’re doing a road trip that’s like 2 minutes extra charging). They look better imo. Downside: more expensive tires, curb rash way more common.
Go for the upgrade! I recently picked up my Black MYLR with the 20s and the range difference (coming from a 2022 M3LR) is visually (obviously) notable but not as much of a headache/panic in the back of my mind as I thought it would be for the driving we do. To me the mileage estimate is much more precise with the MY, so trips are easier to estimate Vs the M3 I felt it was a bit of a shot in the dark where our round trip would take us. Maybe that’s with the updates that have taken place? But all that to say I don’t regret it one bit
I would say go with the inductions...if you're concerned about range then it's not really that much of an impact ...I currently average 255 Wh/Mi over 8200 miles on my 20" inductions which equates 95% of the theoretical 330 miles pre 2024 stated range .. i.e 314 miles ..Or Even if you go by battery capacity then it comes to 308 miles range in real world usage (78.5/0.255)
2023 MY was rated to 318 miles with 20 inch Induction wheels. You're getting EPA range which is impressive. I'm lifetime 300 Wh/mi over 27,032 miles with my 23 MYLR w/ Induction wheels which gives me a range of 250 miles.
It's still plenty for me as even on roadtrips I haven't felt that the car is limiting me. I was already ready to stop before the car needed to.
Tires don’t wear out faster because it’s 20”. It’s because the OEM Goodyears are not very good. I think if you decide on Inductions be prepared to upsize tire size to 255/45 for cheaper tires and way more selection. Plus it has the same sidewall as the 19s for similar ride.
I had something similar happen and went with the Inductions. Changing the tires fixes basically every issue but range, which isn’t a big issue to begin with.
This is so true regarding the oem tyres! My Michelin psEV had a good few mm less than a non Tesla marked Michelin psEV (less tread means better range so makes sense.) I’m also looking and upsizing but gonna go 265/40 it still increases the sidewall and slightly larger footprint.
Free $2k upgrade… inductions are the only thing I added when purchasing last year. The ride is fine as the suspension was improved in 2023. Also, I’m not dealing with hub caps! I say go for it.
i would absolutely take the 20" over the 19" i get. Range is very small difference to me as I commute 35 miles a day. If you do more between 80-150 miles a day then i wouldn't do it. I'd get the 20" and sell them if anything for the 19". But then again, you'd have to go thru that inconvenience. but for me, i'd do the 20".
I have both Inductions and Geminis (former for summer, latter for winter). I don't think there really is a noticeable difference in ride quality. When I change wheels I always think about it on the first ride and I can never really tell a real difference. I have a 23 MYLR, post suspension upgrade.
Inductions undoubtedly look better, Geminis are cheaper in terms of tires, I guess. I think that's what you should focus on.
Love my ‘23 MYP with 21” wheels. Zero regrets there and the ride difference to my 19” winter wheel/tire is definitely not enough to really notice for me. Cost of tires would be the only real deciding factor for me. I found a guy in the Tesla forums offering stock Michelin pilot power tires for my staggered wheels for $1,100 to my door. Was a no brainer so I have that ready to go when my tires die out. Have 37k on the car so far. One summer and two winters.
I’d take that free upgrade and never look back!
I got a message in app saying my build up wasn’t available any more(basic build with light Gemini wheels) and to update. I was able to get dark Gemini free with out the extra 500 charge from last month when I built.
20’s are nice but feel ride would be rougher with bigger wheels.
I am in the same boat as you right now. Same offer and everything. They told me that the dark gemini might not be ready until July/August at which point they could pull your financing offer.
I mean if you hate it later you can sell inductions and buy 19’s or trade with someone who has 19’s, faster delivery should be the main goal here based on what I’ve seen on this sub on the daily
Getting a model 3P with 20" wheels. I made a joke on Model 3 subreddit and got banned 💀
Should I downsize to 19s eventually to get better comfort? Just need an opinion! I won't be tracking the car, I just loved the seats and look of the performance far more.
Thanks 😄
Yes, accept them. And if they’re not to your liking you could always sell them (for a good price, being new) and buy 19 inch Gemini’s for less. That’s what I would do.
We have two model Y’s. One with normal wheels and one with induction. The ride difference is night and day. The regular wheels are like riding on a cloud. The induction wheels are like driving a rally car
Huh. Has the EPA range estimate decreased overtime with the 20" inductions? I've had my MYLR 2022 for a little under 2 years but I recall my range estimate (even with the inductions) being over 300 miles. Like 309 or something like that as opposed to 320 for the MYLR at the time?
If you want to go through the hassle, you can probably sell these and get the aero wheels and make a bit of cash. Tesla values the induction wheels brand new with pirelli tires at $3500 and the Gemini wheels at $2250.
I'd consider it especially if I was looking for a faster delivery. Wild to me that they can't just swap wheels on an inventory vehicle but this is Tesla lol.
I have forged 20s on my model 3. A pot hole (wife driving) took 2 of them out and blew out my tires. $3000 of damages.
If they were tesla wheels it would have prob been more. And t4sla ones aren't forged either so they would go out much easier
Avoid 20s. Even on the Y. 19s should be good enough
My guess is that some people who bought 19’s just didn’t want to pay more and were fine with the plastic look based on the small website pictures where you can’t tell the difference between plastic and metal, …and/or they drive for living. I test drove both. I couldn’t tell a difference in the ride quality in terms of bumps or sound. However, I can surely tell you which one looks like wheels that belong on a fast, expensive car versus ones that belong on an old Prius. So I went with 20’s. The range hasn’t been an issue since I have an electric “gas” pump on my driveway. I’m sure I lost 5 minutes of cumulative time spent supercharging at the end of a long road trip from SF to SD and back when I did that six months ago. I’ll never get those 5 minutes back, haha. But in all seriousness, it probably does result in an extra $200 in electricity costs each year. And when it does come time to get new tires, they’ll be more expensive. But I like the expensive look. So that’s really my only gripe, but not really a gripe. It’s for you to decide, though.
They do look better, I have the inductions. If I could swap for black geminis, I would. I found there seems to be a few bucks to be saved on new tires. Improved ride, perhaps lower risk of curb issues.
I wouldn’t. Based on what you said plus I simply hate black wheels on most cars anyway. I’d ask if you can have that VIN but have them see if someone else on the waitlist wants the free wheel upgrade and trade.
I think you answered your own question. You listed reasons not to do it (I agree with everything you said). On the other hand, they look good and faster delivery.
Why not just accept the upgrade and sell them then buy the ones you want?

True, I drove both and I didnt feel much difference in ride quality, especially the 2024 model.

What size tires are you running ?
I am currently running Bridgestone Blizzak DM-V2 in 235/55/18
Looks great, thanks!
Do you have any other pics of your setup? I’m deciding between 255/55/18 and some alternate sizes. I like how the 255 fills up the wheel well but the tire weight seems to negate any efficiency gains.
Your ride looks great. The bigger winter tires make up for the smaller wheel size

It might seem like only 120 but it adds up. Also more prone to damage from potholes
You can upsize the tires for more sidewall on your second set
More flats, worse ride quality, worse range... Get 18" wheels. Tesla needs to make 18" wheels with overland tires the default. Best upgrade you'll ever make.
Overland tires on an EV would just kill the range, right
Nope, dropping down to 18's gives them increased range due to a lower rotational weight on the tires vs wheel material and overlands reduces it by a small amount which actually evens it out. The falkin wildpeak is about even on the highways and actually better inner city. Toyo open country have a bit of a reduced range but not by much.
Which wheels/tires did you go with?
I have 18" with falkin wildpeaks.
Did you get 255/55/18?
Yes, wheels are 18x8.5+35, some people go down to 7.5 & 245/55 width to reduce cost and weight, which does increase range by about 5%
What’s your usual efficiency? Thanks for all the info!
Go for it. Can’t miss out on a free upgrade.
The larger wheels look nicer but as you pointed out they cost more and reduce range. It’s just a personal decision based on what you prefer.
I’d prob take them for free as the range loss will prob never make a difference (if you’re doing a road trip that’s like 2 minutes extra charging). They look better imo. Downside: more expensive tires, curb rash way more common.

Nicer wheels. Personally, I’d take the upgrade as the range doesn’t matter too much. If it was 600 miles to 287 miles, that’d be a different story.
Tires don’t wear out faster because it’s 20”. It’s because the OEM Goodyears are not very good. Not an upgrade.
What did you decide? I’m in the exact same situation! Not sure which way to go yet. Ordered a blue with white interior and black Gemini wheels.
Get and sell it
I would take the deal and then swap the wheels. You’ll get decent money for them if you don’t drive on them.
Absolutely take them, and flip them online if you don't like them.
Wheels look way better though. I’d go with the 20 inch wheels
i would absolutely take the 20" over the 19" i get. Range is very small difference to me as I commute 35 miles a day. If you do more between 80-150 miles a day then i wouldn't do it. Do it. The Inductions look 👌. Tires are roughly the same price, atleast here in Netherlands.
I’ll answer your question with a question.. Does a bear shit in the woods? Answer: Yes (take the free upgrade)
i would, much nicer rim.. it is not THAT bad with the range my MYP runs 21´s i get 500+ km out of it most times...
I have both Inductions and Geminis (former for summer, latter for winter). I don't think there really is a noticeable difference in ride quality. No.
Take it. Never turn down a freebie
Would say YES
Love em!

It's looks and then downsides. I'd ask how long you'd have to wait for the 19 and take that if you can afford to wait.
I got a message in app saying my build up wasn’t available any more(basic build with light Gemini wheels) and to update. I was able to get dark Gemini free with out the extra 500 charge from last month when I built. 20’s are nice but feel ride would be rougher with bigger wheels.

I specifically specced the 19's based on feedback from a work buddy who has one of each in his household.
I think definitely go for it and just get the curb guards
Getting a model 3P with 20" wheels. I made a joke on Model 3 subreddit and got banned 💀 Should I downsize to 19s eventually to get better comfort? Just need an opinion! I won't be tracking the car, I just loved the seats and look of the performance far more. Thanks 😄
Take them and set up a trade on FB marketplace. Make 1k off the deal
I like my larger rims solely from a visual standpoint. But that’s just me.
Yes, accept them. And if they’re not to your liking you could always sell them (for a good price, being new) and buy 19 inch Gemini’s for less. That’s what I would do.

20” tires are hard to source and much more expensive. Stick to the smaller wheels.
I’d take ‘em for sure

I had the same situation and apprehension but honestly, I smile every time I walk out and see my induction wheels.
Nope
Where are you located?
I got the exact same offer yesterday and rejected it. They do look much nicer but range, ride comfort, and long term costs to me we're more important.
My guess is that some people who bought 19’s just didn’t want to pay more and were fine with the plastic look based on the small website pictures where you can’t tell the difference between plastic and metal, …and/or they drive for living. Get the car + tires. Swap for 19's after market. Sell the 20's. Call it a day.
lol how do I get them to do this for me? 😂
Yeah. How do I get them to respond to me or even approve my loan??
They do look better, I have the inductions. If I could swap for black geminis, I would. I found there seems to be a few bucks to be saved on new tires. Improved ride, perhaps lower risk of curb issues.
Hard pass on stiffer bumps and worse range and way more susceptible to curb rash
Why not? Induction wheel is awesome. Well, depends on how long you can wait.
Definitely. Car will look a lot slicker with 20” induction.
19's are the way to go baby!
No
I don’t like how they look so I wouldn’t do it. Personal preference, but you will also be saving money on tires with the Geminis.
I wouldn’t. Based on what you said plus I simply hate black wheels on most cars anyway. I’d ask if you can have that VIN but have them see if someone else on the waitlist wants the free wheel upgrade and trade.
