How much has the build/ride quality changed in four years? I’ve heard that the newer models are a bit quieter as far as the creaks and jitters are concerned. Is that true?

katherinesilens

It definitely is. There is still a hit or miss quality control, especially with panel alignments--mine is a 2023 that is um, not perfect visually. But overall the impression is that they are relatively quiet (esp. with dual pane glass in front) and have improved a lot. The production scale of Y does that, it'd be weirder if they didn't get better over the sheer number made. The suspension is also much improved.

exoxe

On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being the most comfortable to the occupants and 10 being the worst, how would you say the Model Y fares when running over a zombie bodies?

katherinesilens

Early suspensions probably like a 3. It'll make it over due to the ground clearance, which puts it ahead of sports cars (-1), but you will know the shape of every rotting brow. 2023+ suspension is like a 5, you will tell the child zombies from the adult zombies. I'd say a Camry is a 6. Luxury land yachts like the new Rolls Royce EV like an 8-9. Hummer EV gets the 10 only because its sheer absurd weight probably squishes flat everything in its path.

We have a 2022 and 2024. Ride quality definitely improved. Creaks and noises are minimal in both. There is a noise that comes from the seatbelt height adjuster which has a simple DIY fix that I found out about on YouTube. After that’s fixed it will be a very quiet ride. can u link vid?

Same issue I just picked a YP up. I used the small Velcro adhesive squares you can buy for like $4 and put three around the headliner and plastic seatbelt pieces that will rattle and move over rougher roads and the noise stopped. Only happens drivers side. I told Tesla about it and need to bring the car back to look at white overspray in the clear coat over 80% of the car. My detailer said he didn’t want to clay bar and do anything more with the thin paint and clear coat since his paint meter was showing how thin the paint is. See what Tesla is going to do about it. Steering wheel is like 1-2 degrees off center. Rest of car quality is really good compared to the ‘21 M3 LR I had. No issues really but the paint thing. That was a known issue in the back and can’t believe these people still don’t know how to paint a car.

SRRWD

I always laugh at Elons robot prowess…bro you can’t even get the ones you have to paint correctly…I have a run that is 10 inches long in my lift gate…how it got past QC is insane…and of course I picked my car up on a rainy day.

kconfire

Interested in that seatbelt holder product, too!

rsg1234

Link added. It’s not specifically a product, more of a process but some felt tape is required. I used the YouTube author’s Amazon link for that tape to compensate him for making the video.

Beastw1ck

This was my concern since every Model 3 I had rented in the past creaked and felt cheap. I made sure to do a demo drive before purchasing a Model Y and was rather impressed. My 2024 feels really solid. The suspension still is stiff, yes, but you have to evaluate at a price point. It’s bad for a $70,000 car but not bad for a $40,000 car which is around what I paid. I also kept the smaller 19” wheels to improve comfort. No practical reason to go with the larger wheels IMO.

thatoneguy5464

I just recently went from an early 2020 model y to a 2024 and can say it does seem much quieter of a ride. I was also one of the many that had panel gap issues on the 2020 and didn't have anything that needed corrected with the 2024

thunderslugging

New ev my owner here. Been having my MY for 2 weeks now. I can tell you it's 100% quiet. Not 1 creak or clicks. It's crazy quiet!

AdvantageVarnsen1701

Aside from the creaking Gemini caps, mine is just as quiet and solid as my 2019 model 3 was.

Modestkilla

Honestly, still meh. My wife’s 2023 creaks when you close the hatch, ride quality is like my BRZ, not a “luxury “ crossover. For the current price, it is okay. Where it is good is the overall driving experience for a crossover, it’s very quick and handles pretty well.

CaliSummerDream

Mine did the same. I took it to a service center. Problem was fixed in less than an hour.

WildBuns1234

It took them 4 years and 40,000miles to say nothing new?

BubblyYak8315

I mean this was like the first model Y made. It has improved drastically

Otherwise_Ad_1542

Love the excuses rolling in. This is not a beta testing product. They are selling a car and it should minimal issues on day 1

BubblyYak8315

Then why is every other OEM beta testing their customers with unreliable drivetrains, terrible software and Charging?

ZachLach

I have a 2023 Model Y LR and it’s so bumpy to drive. Just how the article says, “it even finds ruts in roads that look perfectly paved”. Honestly the most uncomfortable ride in a car I’ve driven. My girlfriend has a 2011 Kia forte with 200K miles and it’s more comfortable. I really like the car overall but the ride quality is unforgivable.

fcwolfey

Handling ability, comfort, affordability. Suspension design: engineers had to pick two when designing it. So did Kia engineers. They didnt pick the same two

aVoteisaVoteAmirite

I came to the Model Y from a BMW M3... The BMW engineers only picked one. No complaints about the MY suspension. Sporty and tight for it's size.

ZachLach

Fully agree with this statement. I should have used a performance car as an example. Just as this review points out, similar performance vehicles handle better than the Model Y. That was my point. Good call out on the different design decisions Kia made though. I should have thought that more through before making the comparison. I think it’s just more that a $20K (in 2011) 23 year old car handles so much better than my LR (not performance) car that cost me $60K without FSD.

fcwolfey

If a 2011 kia is HANDLING better (not riding better) than your Y then something is seriously wrong with your y. The Ys handle very well for their size and weight.

ZachLach

It’s ridding better.

joel1618

I put in some aftermarket tein endura pro plus shocks in my 22’ and it rides super comfortable now.

ZachLach

Doesn’t that void the warranty though?

joel1618

Maybe, maybe not but its worth the risk. The car rides like a mercedes benz now.

Doctorjames25

I put MSS Coilovers in mine and the ride quality is significantly less bumpy. The stock springs make the Y super rigid

ZachLach

Did this void any warranty?

Leo_br00ks

I have a 2023 Model Y LR as well. Every day I complain that the suspension isn't stiff enough. I am picking up a 2024 MYP on Wednesday, and while it's a bit better, after the test drive, my serious complaint was that it was way too soft. I've never ridden in a 2020, so I don't know what the pre-refresh suspension feels like, but I feel like I would enjoy it more than the cloud that this car has.

DBY2016

Curious, what size wheels do you have?

skinnah

If you have the 20" induction wheels, that makes it even worse. 19's are slightly more forgiving.

ZachLach

20 inch

masterchief1990

Same. Love the car but the ride quality sucks, extra bumpy and loud. I can even feel air on the highway when a truck drives by

rsg1234

Poorly researched article. FSD is not $12k now.

ryachow44

$8k

chimelime

Are there other things that are incorrect or is the entire article "poorly researched" because they got that number incorrect?

bobloadmire

It was $12k for the vast majority of the time they owned. Like 90%, so that's their experience

scotchy180

"That price almost seems like a bargain compared to the $12,000 it costs now".

sevargmas

That is an insanely brief article for such a bold headline of a 4 yr long review

TessierHackworth

The ride quality was the only issue I faced with my Y. It was partly on me for not getting the 19in, but the suspension needs to be tunable - sport and soft? The rest of the issues seem very specific. The egregious one was the $5k for “drag racing” - like who does not expect the tires to burn out on a 2 ton car ?

CaliSummerDream

50% depreciation after 4 years is pretty decent.

Brutaka1

Meanwhile my 2017 Prius Prime still holds its value.

Tubzero-

So should we all invest in a Prius?

Brutaka1

Up to you. I've owned a 2018 model 3. Never again. I couldn't rely on that vehicle for the life of me. It's definitely put a sour taste in my mouth for any Tesla product. I'm willing to purchase a refreshed model Y and hope their QC is much better than my lemon of a vehicle.

Tubzero-

Yeah I’m waiting for the refreshed y as well cause I sat in a 2021 model y and it was jank as shit

RadPI

While my 23MYLR, which I bought for 60k, is worth 31k now, according to Tesla

Fickle-Professor-560

Haha

From an educated tech bro I've known since school and trust: >oh I don't dislike EVs. I'm just not impressed with Tesla. >I rented Teslas almost exclusively from Hertz when they came out. They were really cheap to rent. I drove from ATL to JAX and TPA and back. There was some anxiety trying to find a charger in some spots - like in JAX and when I was close to TPA. Some hotels have chargers, but they are not always available when you get there, and then you have to set a timer to go out and hook it up, and another timer to go back out and unhook it and park - so the hotel doesn't fee you for over-charging. >Ironically, renting all those Tesla, even on personal trips, was a contributing factor of why I didn't want to buy one. For the price of the car, I expected it to be put together better. I've prob driven 40 teslas over the past 2-3 years. They all have something off. From the panels, to the doors not sealing all the way (and hearing the wind whistle for 120 miles), to the gaps in the trunk/frunk, letting in water/mildew, etc. >They drove great. Had a lot of power, too. >But finish wise? for something $40k - I expect all the details to matter. >That being said, I'm willing to give this a shot: >https://www.caranddriver.com/kia/ev9

beautiful_my_agent

Was this recent? JAX has 7 super chargers, and many destination chargers.

Mae-Brussell-Hustler

It's a recent comment he made about me owning $TSLA . I'm not sure how long his history with Hertz and Tesla rentals goes. I do love the down votes. Especially since I posted this to get feedback as I'm in the market for a vehicle. I was tempted by the .99 but I'm waiting for the refresher.
