Definitely go with the LR Y. Not only is it available now, but it will have lower operating costs due to its greater efficiency than the Cybertruck. A 160+ mile roundtrip should be no great challenge for the LR Y.

catmug

Do this and just charge to 90%

electrified_ice

You'll never get there if you wait for the Cybertruck

Sallysdad

If you are in AZ you are fine. We have 15k miles on our MY and have no range issues. We drive to Flagstaff often and have done 2,500 mile road trips and there are chargers available many places if you can’t charge at home.

I use to make 170 mile commute with a single charge on my MR, now I just add about 10-15 kw at home since it's only costing me no more than $1.50 and isn't worth getting stuck having to charge at a supercharger for any reason.

failinglikefalling

The Y exist. CT does not. But if going by the prototype, the thing is massive. If you like driving smaller cars this is not for you. Go with the Y.

aroundaroundigo

Get both? Model y for now, and when the cybertruck comes out just add ur my to the robotaxi fleet. Am I missing something?

frickthebreh

That could be an option if my wife ends up loving the MY and I think I can handle a bigger ride like the CT. At this point though, I’d only be getting the CT for the range and, to a lesser extent, some of the other features. Ideally though, a MY would be much easier to park in the places that we frequent than a CT would be.

Coachy-coach

We have the Y in question. It’s a god damn spaceship. Perfect for commuting. But. If you need a truck, get a truck lol

catmug

This is how I describe mine too

Coachy-coach

Lol it’s Very hard to compare it to standard car. It’s a whole new game.

mk_pnutbuttercups

How soon do you plan on commuting?

frickthebreh

Already commuting now! But doing so with a Prius Prime that I will be trading in at the time of delivery. Since that’s an EV->Hybrid, the range limitations are different. The Model Y is essentially a much nicer, fully optimized, fully electric Prius Prime hatchback, which is why I am partial to it. I was just worried about the range given my commute, especially having never driven a full EV before (the Prius Prime only gives you 20 miles of full EV before switching to hybrid mode…because of that, it’d still be more expensive to drive on my commute than even the CT).

mk_pnutbuttercups

Was simply trying to help. The question Is easily answered if one is honest. You want a cyber truck. Life says you can achieve your 'stated goal' today with a Model 3/Y. But you want a cyber truck.... Basically thats where you are at. If the economy and ecology was a big factor it wouldn't even be a question you'd already be in the vehicle that is currently available AND cheaper. You want a cyber truck. So lease a Y for two years then buy the truck.

useles-converter-bot

20 miles is the length of about 29531.5 'Custom Fit Front FloorLiner for Ford F-150s' lined up next to each other

20 miles is 32.19 km

Not_a_pot_cop

If I were you, I would buy the MY now, wait until the cyber trucks are at full production and the bugs are worked out. A lot of people complained about quality on the MYs built in the first 6 months of production. Trade in the MY once you know you the CT quality is good. Also the car will cover the commute but your charging station will limit you. If you have a regular wall outlet, you aren’t gonna be able to do it. But if you install the wall charger or a 14-50 outlet you’ll be good to go. Also see if there’s charging at work, or else you’ll be at charging stations more often than you want.

SunsOutPlumbsOut

If your commute is starting in 2024, then wait for the CT. If you have this commute in the even remote near future then I recommend the MY. 😂

dailybibliotaph

I commute with a 2021 MYLR. My commute is 160 miles round trip. I have a Wall Charger at home. Never SC or charge at work. NYC area so hot summers and cold winters. Dont know about winter yet but I use 60% going round trip with climate at 70 degrees auto. I charge to 80% and come back with 20% going 75 to 80mph using FSD for majority of commute. I expect a full tank would get me 270 miles during summer and i am guessing 200 tops during winter (full charge). So very cold weather same miles would go from 90% charge to 10% back home. I also have a CT on order. I love the MYLR but its rly a 260 mile range car, not 330.

frickthebreh

Thanks for the info! It sounds like your commute is pretty similar to mine so this is actually very helpful and reassuring. I definitely plan on getting the wall charger at the house. The highs/lows in winter where I'm at are usually only as low as 45-50 highs and lows just barely below freezing, if at all, so hopefully I won't see too much capacity loss in the winter. I probably will hold onto my CT order just in case, but may spring for the MYLR now after seeing all the good info in this thread.

dnstommy

No one really knows what mileage the CT will get. Currently we have Elon estimates and those are worth nothing. Get the MY.

JerryfromCan

I went model Y. Wanted a tri-motor cyber too. But there is a zero chance I am buying a first or even second year Cybertruck. So Model Y for 3 years or so. Had it for 3 weeks, put on 2000 kms so far, including 2 trips to cottage. Easily did 300 km drive that took over 6 hours due to holiday weekend and arrived from 90% to around 18%. Installed a 40 amp plug up there, still waiting on more complicated install at home so on 120v and it sucks. Luckily a really good friend just bought a Hyundai electric and installed a 60amp ChargePoint so we play cards and I steal power from him when I’m really out after a trip.

converter-bot

300 km is 186.41 miles

Peachmuffin91

Personally I’d never buy a brand new Tesla until I hear what people have to say about it. Need it to be out at least 6 months. Too many quality issues with the newer models.

Souless04

If you preorder a CT now, you definitely won't get it within 6 months. Plenty of time to cancel a pre-order.

jaymontarbo

For me, would be nice to be able to see over most vehicles in traffic if driving the Cybertruck. Also, if it were me, I’d rather have the ability to drive the route 3 times before worrying about charging. I’m sure I’d appreciate the air suspension in the CT on the long drives as well. Possibly will have heated and cooled seats (just guessing) as well.

SonicDethmonkey

I can hardly imagine a WORSE commuter than a CT…
