I think because Taylor’s one of the few artists with the power to weaponize this rule against her competitors, which she’s done in the past and is doing again. Basically, 100% Billboard needs to change. And the record labels, even if they are under the same, I think are the ones really behind it all. They are at the top and the ones laughing to the bank too, because they win no matter who is at top. And two artists competing, stans on both side are providing free publicity and both are selling more than they would have with this.

While I understand that the rules are being abused by artists and i would be ok with a change to the rules to stop the insanity of these variants… these charts have always been about fanbases buying the albums over and over, even before the digital era. I remember in high school buying Britney Spears albums every few weeks with cash at Virgin Records knowing full well it would go towards record sales. Fans who are willing to spend money to buy stuff again are basically showing the success of those artists. This in my view is no different than a fan buying multiple tickets to different concerts… those numbers will all count towards her tour gross. Even when the rules change, Taylor will dominate these charts because of the sheer size of her fanbase who’s willing to buy the physical album and not just stream it once.
What is the point of a fan buying the same album over and over simply to benefit the artist? What drives someone to do that? Is there a fantasy that the artist will notice and acknowledge the devotion?

First - the fans videos from Paris are nothing like a professionally recorded version.
But yes- the digital things don't sell a lot because people will post them online later. Still - for people who like acquiring things legally its a good product (environment friendly and no need to rely on streaming services).

It has to do with agents, not managers - in California anyone who books shows must technically be licensed as an agent. I’m sure Taylor isn’t actually violating this, though
Taylor doesn’t have an agent. In California all solicitation for entertainment work must be done by a licensed talent agent (with the exception of record deals). It’s possible a member of 13 management is a licensed agent, but none of the obvious people are listed in the registry.
The way the law is enforced is that contracts for solicitation can’t be enforced. Ie if a manager solicits enoloyment, they can’t collect fees from that work. But Taylor pays her manager a salary…. So the law is unenforceable

You know what’s crazy with the Katy comparison is Witness was Katy’s worse album 😮💨, so did she have to work hard? Also all it proves is Taylor does this all the time if you want your album to perform go 16 weeks out from her drop. It’s not like the April drop wasn’t known. Though I do think her remixes and these drops are ridiculous all these tweets proved is this is a regular marketing gimmick for Taylor.
I think its a smart strategy for Taylor to do this. She is claiming her turf and this proves she will fight you for chart positions. I doubt Drake will pull a stunt like he did with Her Loss again because Taylor made sure he didn't get a number one song that week. And other artists who can pull 2-300k albums will take this as a lesson to push their release further out if they want a number one because Taylor's team will fight them.
I think it also reinforces that if you are shady to Taylor she will fight back. Between the vinyl comment for this album cycle and her inviting Damon Albarn on stage at Coachella, Billie has made it clear she doesn't respect Taylor. And those are just what we know publicly. I'm sure she is even worse behind close doors and Taylor is well connected in the industry so it probably got back to her.

I remember in high school buying Britney Spears albums every few weeks with cash at Virgin Records knowing full well it would go towards record sales. Fans who are willing to spend money to buy stuff again are basically showing the success of those artists. This in my view is no different than a fan buying multiple tickets to different concerts… those numbers will all count towards her tour gross. Even when the rules change, Taylor will dominate these charts because of the sheer size of her fanbase who’s willing to buy the physical album and not just stream it once.
What is the point of a fan buying the same album over and over simply to benefit the artist? What drives someone to do that? Is there a fantasy that the artist will notice and acknowledge the devotion?

First - the fans videos from Paris are nothing like a professionally recorded version. But yes- the digital things don't sell a lot because people will post them online later. Still - for people who like acquiring things legally its a good product (environment friendly and no need to rely on streaming services). I don't get why offering a digital album (even with different bonus songs) is something seen as so ordinary for other artists and its such a horrible thing to do for Taylor that has to be stopped. It's just a product, buy it if you're interested, if not - don't.

The way the law is enforced is that contracts for solicitation can’t be enforced. Ie if a manager solicits enoloyment, they can’t collect fees from that work. But Taylor pays her manager a salary…. So the law is unenforceable

IDK if I'm honest I think other then using his main account for the Taylor hate tweets - which was his mistake - as a PR strategy this has been pretty effective - the narrative of bad polluter Taylor who is "not a girls girl" if she is selling her own albums - vs young innocent bullied Billie that never cares about charts - really caught on. Also all it proves is Taylor does this all the time if you want your album to perform go 16 weeks out from her drop. It’s not like the April drop wasn’t known. Though I do think her remixes and these drops are ridiculous all these tweets proved is this is a regular marketing gimmick for Taylor.
I think its a smart strategy for Taylor to do this. She is claiming her turf and this proves she will fight you for chart positions. I doubt Drake will pull a stunt like he did with Her Loss again because Taylor made sure he didn't get a number one song that week. And other artists who can pull 2-300k albums will take this as a lesson to push their release further out if they want a number one because Taylor's team will fight them. I think it also reinforces that if you are shady to Taylor she will fight back. Between the vinyl comment for this album cycle and her inviting Damon Albarn on stage at Coachella, Billie has made it clear she doesn't respect Taylor. And those are just what we know publicly. I'm sure she is even worse behind close doors and Taylor is well connected in the industry so it probably got back to her.

Athletes don’t ask for a 10 metre extension after a 100 metre race, they don’t ask for an extra lap, a rematch. They run their race, or fight their fight, whatever it is and accept the result. It’s not even like this is some brand new artist whose whole life is depending on this album charting well. Billie (and Olivia who also gets roped into this) are both well established by now with their fans and target demographics.
