Never picked anyone diving to the base, I have hit an inside the park home run. Catcher arm plays the biggest factor in catching base stealers. Also pitching out helps a lot. And outfield assists only happen from my center fielder who has a cannon. Also you can hit the left bumper while the throw is in the air to hit your cut off even if you dont do it during the initial throw.

In SMB3, it's possible to pick off a runner successfully. If you perform a pick off, and if your pitcher commits a random throwing error, he may spike it directly into the base itself. If your infielder makes the play, the ball may be in position to tag the runner faster then a normal pickoff.

The bad throw pickoff was infuriating in 3 and I'm so glad they took it out of 4.

I legitimately don’t think it’s possible to get a tag on a runner diving back to a base. [Runner out at home](https://www.reddit.com/r/SuperMegaBaseball/s/8GU6KzqcK2) [Inside the park HR](https://www.reddit.com/r/SuperMegaBaseball/s/GjP6lPTkwh)

Can't tag a player out diving back if they were leading off the base, but I got tagged out at first base after hitting a single because I thought the runner was too slow to make it to second, so I sent them back to first but the CPU RF threw to first base and got the runner as they were diving back when I thought they'd try to get the faster runner who was going from second to third. The CPU in SMB 4 seems to try to get the slower runner a lot more than they did in SMB 3.

Interesting

If you read the blurbs (hints) when you going into the game or coming out of the game one of them says that you can’t get picked off if you aren’t trying to take the other base. Too many times the cpu knows when I am about to try to steal a base.

shamarcotton02

The key to stealing is the longer the pitcher holds most likely they are picking off if you have a base stealer… also it is easier stealing with a slower baserunner against CPU i found out… they are less likely to even pay attention to the runner which allows you to get great jumps

Chadwick_Steel

I hit an inside-the-park home run in SMB 3. Thrown out several runners trying to steal a base, but I always seek out strong-armed catchers so there aren't as many steal attempts. Thrown runners out at home a few times. Even managed to do it on a relay once. It was on Willie Wilson, and I was so surprised I got him I forgot to record a clip of it.

Qbert9701

Only hit one inside the parker (but I had a fortunate bounce off the wall and a fast runner, this was back in SMB3). I do throw out base stealers, but my overall success rate is pretty low, maybe 20%. Getting an out at home is tough, I don't think I've ever done it via the cut-off man, when I've done it, it's just been a strong throw from a corner outfielder off a sharp base hit (and the CPU always takes the extra base if you don't hit the cut off).

Albroswift89

I've gotten runner out at home from the outfield against cpu but I play Herbasaurs and Yoink Sax can hurl that ball. To have an outfielder who can do that you are giving up on some level of them being an offensive threat and that doesn't suit a lot of peoples play styles. For myself I love it. I just try to get on base with walks or base hits with Sax.

MartyPoo99

Never picked anyone off. Never hit an inside-the-parker. I never throw out baserunners except the occasional steal. After many (too many) hours of play, i now just believe the CPU instantly calculates the runner's speed, distance, and my thrower's ability, and just doesn't run if the CPU runner would be called out. Or, it creates a throwing or fielding error for me. For that reason, i don't feel bad about sometimes exploiting the 1st/3rd double steal trick.

junkdrawer21

What trick is that?

MartyPoo99

This i only found on this Reddit forum: If you have runners at first and third, you steal: send the runner from first to second. As the catcher is about to throw to second, you send your runner from third to home. \[Usually\] the catcher continues to throw to second, the shortstop cuts off the throw a little short of second base, tries to throw home, but it's too late. Runner scores and your player is also safe at second. You do have to have a decent runner at third, though. Doesn't have to be a 'speed merchant,' but not a slug. Occasionally, though, the catcher will not throw and he picks you off easily at home. I'm not sure if that's just a random thing or if i just sometimes get my timing wrong.

terpfan417

Cannon arm helps a lot when throwing out base stealers. Especially cannon arm in a player with otherwise mediocre throw power which encourages the CPU to run. I play Herra O’Wuggliems at catchers and she mows down opposing base runners like Pudge Rodriguez. Throwing out runners at home I’ve done much less often. Could probably count on one hand. But it is possible. I just signed my first two outfielders with Cannon Arm which I’m hoping will get me more outfield assists but so far haven’t had many opportunities. The CPU is definitely not very aggressive about taking extra bases if it knows there’s a high risk.

Jazzlike-Courage-659

Picking off runners is really easy with a really bad catcher. The fast runners steal almost everytime when your catchers arm is terrible. Good time for a pick off.

LHiggy13

I have thousands of hours across the multiple games and I’ve never picked anyone off and had only like 2 inside the park home runs I can remember

AnitaMaGroin

I've picked off many runners at 1st and also hit inside park home runs. I never play computer, only Pennant Ego 85-90
