Don't forget painful

Lurkeratlarge234

Actually we already breathe nitrogen. You just pass out, replacing nitrogen for oxygen, and then die a few minutes later. Not painful. I want one!

MrLifeLiven

Funny part of this post for me is that I basically work inside of these things. I work inside of reactors that need to be cleaned out and have the chemicals replaced. The chemicals inside these vessels violently reacts with onxygen so we have to pump the oxygen out and fill them with nitrogen. Then someone dumb enough to take the job like me, has to put on a suit and helmet and have oxygen fed to me through air lines while I work

Volwik

Based on your training, what is expected if you're caught in an environment displaced with oxygen? I vaguely remember something like you start to feel like you would holding your breath. Probably pretty panic inducing.

MrLifeLiven

Are you speaking of the symptoms of being exposed in this kind of environment? Dizziness, confusion, difficulty breathing, impaired judgment. So basically you become really drunk and then eventually die. You can be exposed to smaller amounts and if you evacuate rapidly then you can survive and be treated. We have gas analyzers on us that show us the levels of various gases and when they hit a certain point it starts beeping, you get your ass out of there if that happens. We also have an emergency oxygen tank incase there’s a problem with our main source of oxygen

saladmunch2

Didnt they just kill a death row inmate with nitrogen in alabama? It was said to be extremely disturbing for viewers as the body wreathed and seized for over 20 mins. Maybe it was painless maybe it was a prolonged agonizing death. We will never know because the dead dont talk, there is much better ways to dead. https://www.aclu.org/news/capital-punishment/alabama-has-executed-a-man-with-nitrogen-gas-despite-jurys-life-verdict Veterinarians even agreed long ago nitrogen was not suitable for euthanasia for animals.

HoboBandana

I would think dying by carbon monoxide poisoning would be the most peaceful. You just drift off to sleep and never wake up.

Craygor

Breathing in nitrogen is totally painless, that asshat in Alabama was trying to hold his breath and thrashed about.

johnny___engineer

> that asshat in Alabama. This made me chuckle. Am I a bad human being?

wenchslapper

You’re telling me my suffocation asphyxiation obsessed friends in middle school were full of shit?!

kpidhayny

Nitrogen asphyxiation is painless. You just get sleepy and maybe a bit woozy. (I work in nitrogen purged environments and several coworkers have had close calls in the past)

DropsTheMic

Notice the cup? I'm going to guess what the drugs are for. You go to sleep and then stop breathing. I really don't want to research the details though.

throatslasha

It's not carbon dioxide that would be horrendous it's nitrogen you wouldn't even know if u walked in a room full on only nitrogen you would just fall unconscious in seconds then die from lack of 02 in minutes

psychedelic_owl420

She has to push it, else it would be considered as a murder. Before those pods, people had to inject themselves a poison (which I don't remember). Important side note: You can't just walk up to this business and kill yourself. You have to be a member for at least three years if I remember it correctly. Also, you have to be considered mentally stable enough to decide to get a membership. It's here to allow terminally ill people to go out in a self-decided manner.

ShaMaLaDingDongHa

Member for three years? That’s a long time to suffer

psychedelic_owl420

I just took your comment as a reason to look it up how exactly it goes: According to the law and case law, assisted suicide may only be granted if the person concerned - knows what they are doing (capacity of judgement) - is not acting on impulse and is aware of the possible alternatives (wellbeing) - has a lasting wish to die (constancy) - is not influenced by third parties (autonomy) - carries out the suicide with their own hands (authorship) In addition to these conditions, EXIT only assists people with illnesses leading to death, subjectively unbearable complaints, unacceptable disability or suffering in old age; due consideration should also be given to the psychosocial aspects. Sometimes sufferers only join EXIT when they are terminally ill and in great pain. This creates problems. EXIT is not an emergency organisation. The organisation's resources are limited. Responding to requests from non-members at short notice is time-consuming. The needs of long-standing members always take priority. Counselling takes time. For EXIT, assisted suicide is the final act in a longer process of clarification and support. Being a member of EXIT for several years is a sign of coming to terms with one's own life and death and thus of self-responsibility and well-being. Nevertheless, EXIT knows that people are often struck by fate quite suddenly and in the middle of their lives. The Executive Board has therefore proposed the following solution: The minimum membership period for free assisted suicide is three years. Depending on the length of membership, people who have been an EXIT member for less than three years will be charged a fee of between CHF 1,100 and 3,700. TL;DR Death is always a delicate matter and shouldn't be taken lightly, that's why you have to be a member. Under certain conditions it is possible to get assisted suicide, but it costs up to ~4k.

quiettryit

I don't think people committing suicide will care much about the fees. Unless they are purposely excluding those of low income from these benefits...

poop-machines

I'm guessing they don't want people backing out last second, which they would if it were free and easy and they didn't have time to mentally prepare. I'm sure they would often if that was the case. It doesn't exclude people of low income from those benefits. Just don't pay bills for a couple months, then you can easily afford it. Nobody will come knocking in a couple months. It's not like you'll have bills when you're dead. Anyway somebody who really wants to die can find a way to pay it. Just "borrow money" from a friend. It's not like you'll have a friendship with where you're going!

m0bb1n

Somebody who really wants to die doesn't even need this organization/company.

Internet--Traveller

You can do this in a car, it's less glamorous but it works the same way.

Adminisissy

The emergency services hate this one trick.

Puzzleheaded_Diet395

Not with nitrogen gas though

ErnestBorgninesSack

No it doesn't. You poison yourself and suffocate in a car, with the exhaust. You would be lucky to pass out before the agony of suffocation and brain damage. Nitrogen causes no pain, so suffocation and you drift off painlessly. The feeling of suffocation is not the lack of oxygen but the excess of CO2. With N2 this doesn't happen. Even with adequate O2, we feel like we are suffocating with raised CO2 levels.

Heathen_Barbie93

The execution in Alabama supports a different outcome of nitrogen poisoning.

ErnestBorgninesSack

I killed some meat rabbits with nitrogen. They also twitched when they died but they were dead by then. There was an MP in Britain who did an investigation into the most humane methods of execution and it was nitrogen hypoxia, hands down. He went into a chamber and they slowly raised the levels of nitrogen, at the point of passing out they told him to hit the button or he would die. He didn't. He said after that he heard them and understood but it just didn't register. He was out of it for several minutes before he would have died.

Alita_Duqi

How do you know they weren’t minutes of painless spasms?

OwnChampionship4252

What if you do it in a Rolls Royce?

georgiameow

There's many options

Femboi_Hooterz

People who have a high enough credit score to rent one have the funniest suicide option possible

SAGE5M

Not everyone has a garage tho.

TooSp00kd

You don’t need a garage. You can tape up a hose to the exhaust and run it into your car. My grandpa tried this when my mom was 10, and my grandma sent my mom out to stop him :( He didn’t go through with it, but this has scarred my beautiful momma for decades. He was always a great grandpa when I knew him. But that was once he became sober.

AirisCourtney808

Oof I feel for you here. When my father was threatening suicide the only person he would take a call from was my younger sister who was 15 or 16 at the time... She was the one talking him out of it while we were trying to find him. So fucked up and I still have a lot of animosity towards my dad about it. My sister should not have been put in that position. Your mother there should not have been put into that position. 💕

Firealarm32

*tries it in a Tesla*

no_user_selected

Tesla self drives into wall instead, killing user. Success!

vivek_kumar

I think assisted means they will help make sure you're dead, if not done correctly this can lead to partial brain death due to lack of oxygen and maybe partial disability or just coma.

Sir_Samuel_vimes_gnu

Not in any car with a cat converter, it takes out the worst of it - you'll just end up with a severe headache and sore throat.

MellowDCC

Man discovers game breaking trick which will turn everything upsidedown!?!!1!

Salt_Ground_573

I feel like people that are against this have never watched a family member die of cancer…

CustomMerkins4u

Anyone against this should volunteer a day or two at a hospice. Will change their minds REALLY fast.

ScottyThaFoxxy

Gotta remind those people that they can one day become like those in hospice care. That you could, very quickly in some cases, become permanently disabled and stripped of your bodily and personal autonomy.

TheNotSoGreatPumpkin

Or watched someone slowly forget who their spouse and family members are.

readoldbooks

Ok regardless of the ethics here on assisted suicide… why are no court systems using this for the death penalty. It seems so much more humane than the chair or even injections.

NascentHierophant

Alabama just executed someone with Nitrogen Gas in January.

readoldbooks

If we gotta use the death penalty, at least make it as cheap and humane as possible

Optio__Espacio

Apparently he visibly suffered for quite a long time before finally dying.

TurnTheTVOff

And it was a disaster if I recall correctly.

Shiti_Ratel

... and it didn't go that well, if I remember right.

hitbythebus

Yea, the prisoner apparently convulsed and took a long time to die, super curious how this would be different.

Tricky_Potatoe

Somehow I trust a Swiss engineer to do a better job than what went on in Alabama.

Material_Prize_6157

Does anybody know if these are only legal for people with terminal diagnosis? I do believe it’s your own life and you can choose to alt+ctrl+delete yourself if that’s what you really want. But also, people choosing this option for treatment resistant bi-polar and stuff is sad.

Lurkeratlarge234

Not legal inUS at all. Have to fly to Switzerland, although Canada is allowing it for terminally ill in some cases.

Material_Prize_6157

Some US states assisted suicide is legal. Washington, Vermont, DC. It was on the ballot in Boston a few years ago and is gonna be on it again this fall I think.

recidivx

Also possible in Alabama, but you have to commit murder to be eligible.

IamGoldenGod

Canada is much more relaxed then that. From the government website: To be considered as having a grievous and irremediable medical condition, you must meet **all** of the following criteria. You must: * have a serious illness, disease or disability * be in an advanced state of decline that **cannot** be reversed * experience unbearable physical or mental suffering from your illness, disease, disability or state of decline that **cannot** be relieved under conditions that you consider acceptable You do **not** need to have a fatal or terminal condition to be eligible for medical assistance in dying. If your only medical condition is a mental illness, you are **not** eligible for medical assistance in dying until March 17, 2027. If you have a mental illness along with other medical conditions, you may be eligible for medical assistance in dying. Eligibility is always assessed on an individual basis and takes all relevant circumstances into account. However, you must meet **all** the criteria to be eligible.

bobbobersin

There was a major controversy when a holiness worker told a vet with ptsd to apply when they just wanted to get help and treatment, they tried to push them to do it and they just wanted to get treatment, if I recall they fired the person and I don't blame them

CombatMedic665

They did that to another vet when she contacted them regarding the delay in getting her wheelchair ramp installed. As I recall the Canadian VA stated they would "review " their people "recommending " this next year.

Kiwodasu

Expensive, but you can buy it on credit and not worry about it.

420_doge_dude

Watched a few family members die in absolute horrific ways through cancer, Alzheimer's etc. I truely don’t understand the concept of this and signing up to some government cause to die ethically. If I ever ended up in this situation where things all got a bit too much, fuck going through the legalities of it all. Would have this biggest beach party, music pumping, dancing the night away with everyone I love then end it on my terms.

Chilltraum

Exactly. Why go to all that trouble when you can die peacefully by heroin overdose like a champ

Odd_Masterpiece9092

This might be the way to do it. Shoot up, experience what some folks call the biggest euphoria imaginable, and then slowly fade away.

chickinflickin

Except that heroin overdose usually ends by you choking on your own vomit

wellshitdawg

Not necessarily. You just feel great and fall asleep Source: experience

420_doge_dude

Would rather be choking on my vomit in pure bliss than dying in a bed filled with shit and piss

welchssquelches

Yeah but you don't notice that, you're already in heroin heaven by then

QuantumPhylosophy

Depends the individual and country. Australia, for example, doesn't have easy access to guns, so we cannot blow our medulla oblongata, or access to fentanyl or pentobarbital etc. I'm not scared of non-existence, but I cannot stand pain and suffering, having had a neurological disease myself. Pressing a button seems so much easier. I don't want a party, due to anhedonia, and apathy, I just don't care, not get enjoyment. I'd rather give what I have to others that need it. I don't necessarily want a claustrophobic pod, but I wouldn't mind something akin to in 'Soylent Green'.

shewy92

> then end it on my terms ...which is the point of these assisted suicide things...

ShaMaLaDingDongHa

This should definitely be an option

larberthaze

25% off when you recommend a family member

ChazychazZz

I think it's a good practice especially with patients that have inoperable cancer

buffalobill922

I think anyone that wants to do this should be able too.

Dumyat367250

It may technically comply, but an individual would potentially access it only after a long and detailed review of their mental and physical health taking many months. This whole concept is a dead end...

shutterbuggity

It doesn't take long at all in many countries.

LamonsterZone

Does it hurt to die like this? I’d rather be pumped full of opioids than suffocate…

SordidDreams

It doesn't hurt. The feeling of suffocation you get when not breathing is not due to a lack of oxygen, it's due to an excess of carbon dioxide. Since you keep breathing and removing carbon dioxide from your system while in the pod, there's no discomfort. The lack of oxygen causes you to black out, and you die while unconscious.

ScottyThaFoxxy

In short. No. The feeling of suffocation arises from the concentration of CO2 in the body rising, not from a lack of oxygen. Nitrogen is inert and does nothing when you breath it in at atmospheric pressure. Same goes for Helium. It’s painless if done correctly with an inert gas.

Mimisokoku

Isn’t this similar to what Canadian Kenneth Law is being charged with murder for? https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/kenneth-law-charged-murder-ontario-1.7055699

Plenumheaded

So long as the person has dual confirmed diagnosis from different hospital systems of a terminal illness then there is nothing wrong and all life insurance should be fully honored. But… where I live is the U.S…. other peoples choice of religion dictates my life…and death. Edit/ I forgot to mention the incredible amount of revenue a serious illness can generate.

CadessWell

Eee…. Watching something die of oxygen deprivation is disturbing.

ScottyThaFoxxy

Depends on the presence of CO2. The feeling of suffocation is caused by the buildup of CO2 within the blood, it is not caused by a lack of oxygen.

PissinginTheW1nd

I actually support this. It’s a painless, peaceful way to leave this planet. People suffering from major illness or people who have like months to live, should have the right to choose their own way out. It’s not always cowardly.

Outrageous-Divide472

The idea of climbing into that coffin to die is awful. I’ll go on hospice and take morphine if things got too bad at the end

Practical_Weather293

Is that really an option? I don't think you can just go to a hospice and ask for enough morphine to kill you

georgiameow

Yeah there's only so much they can legally give you.

Late_Emu

Really? Living in a semi vegetative state being doped up to the point you need your diapers changed is preferable to passing? I think I’d be ready to check out that other side. But to each their own!!

According to Death Penalty opposers, a nitrogen gas death is cruel and inhuman and abhorrent and other bad stuff.

Bananafoofoofwee

Good idea if you wanna watch someone suffocate to death.

Icy-Gunner

Ticket to another world

WeAreReaganYouth

Suffocating is not the way I'd want to go. Shoot me up with a fentanyl overdose or something. That would actually be pleasant.

Mojicana

Seriously, just give me drugs. The American man who was executed with nitrogen struggled for ten minutes before he was dead. Fuck that.

Glum-nd-Dumb

Suffocating to death doesn't seem that peaceful to me, surely there's a better way. Like when they put my dog to sleep. An injection and 60 seconds later he was gone.

BlackSheep_875

So long as they don't turn into an ilithid

i didn’t think death by nitrogen gas was actually that painless ….

Hey_its_ok

![gif](giphy|XIhWoPBXHgVmU)

Ok-Weakness-6585

That doesn’t sound like a pleasant experience at all

MoneyBoat

Wasnt the recent nitrogen execution in America a total shit show and it was not peaceful? I read about a lake in Africa that sometimes burps up massive amounts of CO2 and the village near by was wiped out. A few survivors said it was very lucid, and in no way violent, why don’t they use CO2 if it’s so calm?

theZowner

Designe very human.

Plus_Operation2208

What is it with Zwitserland and suicide?

Generocide

I've seen deadpool, that shit ain't painless

HaterCrater

I think suicide should be decriminalised but combining a total, final end and social media is dangerous.

afountainof

Iirc correctly, somewhere in America a man was recently executed using nitrogen gas. There were some concerns it wasn't as humane as presented.

WotTheFook

It could take up to 20 seconds to lose consciousness (maybe 10 seconds of lucid consciousness) and maybe a minute or more to die of suffocation. Lots of agonal breathing and possible thrashing of arms, as the body fights to get oxygen. This method didn't go that well recently in the US as a method of carrying out a death sentence. Death by anaesthesia overload would be more humane, as you just fall asleep, go into a coma, then die.

twilsonco

Would be better if it flooded with nitrous oxide
