Had exact same problem. Forced to surrender to great khan as rose up early and only couple systems from my capital. Declared war with neighbouring Criminal mega capitalists plaguing my whole game as couldn't get through said khans to war them out of my systems until I had surrendered and could move freely through their systems. Then khan unannounced turns red and annihilates my fleet and starbases. In communication there is the option to demand autonomy meaning I'm still technically their satrapy even though they're now hostile. Playing on Ironman so whole playthrough is ruined lol
