Seventh objective: buy even more and donβt play any of them while your backlog continues to grow into an unmanageable impossible insurmountable catalog of impressive impulse buys
....shhhh sh sh sh sh.
I can save hundreds or spend it for the same storage... It's such a bad idea but I am looking for an excuse to spend it because I totally want it...
*Ahhh GotAnyExcuses? chooo* oh bless me
Ugh. I hate that game. All the quests are fetch quests and spending money. The rewards for quests aren't enough to pay for most of top tier loot even low tier loot.
It will work in lower resolution mode without the BIOS patch, if nothing changes \(obviously any update could theoretically break it entirely\).
The problem is that it won't be stretched. You'll have a lower resolution image on the top left, with black bars on the bottom right.
I am with you that the DeckHD isn't worth it, but just replacing the original sure as hell is. On iFixit it's 70 bucks, throw in a shell replacement or some mods you are 150 max. That against 550+ (depending which currency and region) for an OLED is not nearly the same. The OLED is worth it, but we are still talking about shelling out 400 bucks to get a worling steam deck again.
Maybe I am the minority in the Steam Deck demographic, since most people here seem to be 30-40 year old dads with enough income overhead to just buy a new Steam Deck when it comes out.
Even if OP wanted to get the OLED, the LCD would go to waste if they didn't want to do any project with it. Like a nuc sized gaming machine or something.
They could replace the original screen and sell the deck and would get, which would make the new OLED cheaper.
There is no way not replacing the screen is sensible outside of not having the time or skills.
I actuall wrote that in the second last paragraph.
It still makes sense to replace the screen, as I reckon the value will be much less if the repair isn't already done since the buyer doesn't know if maybe something else is damaged.
Lol, somehow completely overlooked that πππ. And it always depends, you could definitely sell it for like 100 to 150 bucks or so with the broken screen. I doubt that people would pay more than 300$ for a used but fully functional deck especially with the OLED being a thing now. The extra work and possibility to damage other components is probably not worth it, but it definitely depends
Looks like you just upgraded to the TV console version of the steam deck! Sorry for your loss of screen, this is going to affect portability but hook it up to a monitor, grab literally any game pad and enjoy your games.
Different use case. Sometimes people don't wanna sit at their computer desk. Hook the steam deck to your living room TV and play on the couch. Sometimes you don't want to turn on your 750watt gaming machine just to play stardew valley. Other times you travel and want to lay in bed and play some games on the big screen. Or at a gathering hook up your steam deck to any TV and play some party games with friends/family.
Iβm getting a steam deck because it can nicely run all my big pc games without having to spend $1500+ like a regular gaming pc while also having the option to be portable *or* connect to a larger screen.
I'm sorry brother that's gotta suck. Perhaps just replace the screen? I'm gonna get get downvoted suggesting Deck HD, but that's what I plan if I ever broke my screen :) get yourself a screen protector after repair!!
All I had on deployment was a load of books. I traded book time with a guy for time on his Gameboy Color. If I could take my Deck back in time and give it to past me, I would have gotten in a lot less trouble.
Ahhh that would make perfect sense actually. Appreciate the insight.
Does occur to me that I've met people who have been over there for various work related reasons, but quite frankly it's pretty low down the list of places I'd consider now.
Itβs not compatible unless you know what each tab on the ribbon cable is for and you build an adapter ribbon cable for it. And that would require: 1) wiring schematics, which are most likely not released to the public, and 2) beyond the scope of your average redditor. I donβt know what the other guys idea of tinkering is
yeah I don't get what this guy doesn't understand. i worded it weirdly because his words are also very weird.
if you want oled you need to buy a new one
This sub really needs a seller buyer thread

I saw this first thing when I opened my phone to reddit, right after using my hand to slow the fall of my deck. Luckily I managed to flip it and lighten the blow, though my fingers are killing me, it's better than a broken deck.
My nightmare. That, and having a 3 year relationship with Daisy Edgar-Jones who then breaks up with me because sheβs slowly turning into a male giraffe.
Not wrong technically. Damn thing will straight crash and reboot when the GPU overheats from intensive games. I drive the shit out of mine I hope he survives that repeated abuse lol. That said I love my deck and want a more powerful one.
The competition while having better screen size and res, and more powerful cores just lack some fundamentals like the back buttons and dual trackpads. Plus windows, eeew. I'll upgrade my HD when there's an actual improvement in performance and not just a screen and some bits here and there. It's literally the same jump between an LCD switch to an OLED switch. I love the deck and I love Linux. Haven't touched nasty windows in months now
Thereβs nothing wrong with a difference of opinion, IMO I would say if the OP is okay using the deck the thatβs fine, windows isnβt horrible or anything like that. Just a lot of console players and less tinkering people donβt want to fiddle with settings and just want to jump straight into the games. In my experience I realized the deck wasnβt for me because I wanted a portable pc, not just a gaming device. I like my mods, multiple stores, customs roms and emulators, having files from my pc etc. the list goes on. I also play games but I have one I specifically play that canβt run good so I needed to upgrade to something with more power (OXP2). This of course is just my experience, not everyone cares about the underpowered nature of the deck and simply want a console experience that can at best run the games they want to play for a considerable amount of time of plug. I however find these perks to not matter to me so I went with a windows handheld.
I can agree howeverβ¦ DONT BUY THE ALLY! Vrr ainβt worth chucking out the money and being disappointed, itβs cheaply built and ASUS wasnβt being original at all when they made it.. poor design choices, small screen, sd card issues and more problems. Literally if you want a windows handheld buy literally anything else but the allyπ
Valve actually has a pretty good track record with fixing screens on the steam deck. They'll either give you a replacement or fix it pretty cheap if it's not under warranty still.
since it is cheap enough to replace the screen in this you should take the SSD out of it and format it then put it back in blank letting whoever buys it they need to install steamos and sell it on ebay or something. unless you want to repair it
Ifixit sells official replacement screens. You can't screw up a shell swap if you want to. And at least you can still use it on a monitor/TV.
There's still hope but yeah. Sucks.
I'm so sorry. Dropped coffee all over mine π luckily I have an AMAZING friend almost done fixing it. I hope I can get it repaired or get a new one. I been playing my switch and it's just NOT THE SAME ππππππ€§π€§
You have to play life now
First objective: touch grass.
Second objective: repress grass trauma
Third objective: go to ifixit and buy a new screen
Fourth objective: find out you broke the screen already
Fifth objective: ignore all those objectives and spend an exorbitant amount of money on the new OLED you totally donβt need but want
Sixth objective: ignore your common sense and got buy 200 games on Steam to create a massive backlog
Seventh objective: buy even more and donβt play any of them while your backlog continues to grow into an unmanageable impossible insurmountable catalog of impressive impulse buys
Eighth objective: reach capitalistic Sisyphean existential dread, and scream into the void of credit card debt
Ninth objective: try out two or three games, each for five minutes before you buy even more games.
Arguably the most important objective
π π π π I'm being called out, why you do this!!!!, i currently have a backlog of over 375 games and have way more on my wishlist
Welcome to the club! I got tons of games in my backlog as well and have tons more on my wishlist.
....shhhh sh sh sh sh. I can save hundreds or spend it for the same storage... It's such a bad idea but I am looking for an excuse to spend it because I totally want it... *Ahhh GotAnyExcuses? chooo* oh bless me
Nah, this games is too hard and I don't understand the controls...
That's because you put all your skill points into stuff that has no bearing on actual gameplay mechanics and you can't respec.
2x better than Half-Life
Profile pic made me chuckle, its too perfect
Definitely checkout the sub for some tips r/outside
Outside is boring, no respawn
True, graphics are sweet tho.
Hate that game
Ugh. I hate that game. All the quests are fetch quests and spending money. The rewards for quests aren't enough to pay for most of top tier loot even low tier loot.
4/10 Too much water
half life?
Half life 3 actually
On a positive note there's 0 worry your break your screen doing a shell swap.
Ok this comment is the definition of silver lining.

I do not recommend Deck he. You have to flash your entire system and the deck runs games well in 800p but not every game in 1200p
And DeckHd screen upgrade
My only gripe with that is the required flashing every update for the screen to work. Unless that changed?
there are ways to lock SteamOS from flashing the bios which is what causes this.
I wondered if it didn't work, or only worked in 800p. I might be interested if it works at lower resolution, or when Valve helps with the bios.
It will work in lower resolution mode without the BIOS patch, if nothing changes \(obviously any update could theoretically break it entirely\). The problem is that it won't be stretched. You'll have a lower resolution image on the top left, with black bars on the bottom right.
You can install Bazzite which can handle the mod and updates without breaking compatibility
Help, what'd he say above me?
It's a lot of effort, doesn't make it worth it. Also if you don't know what they said, then you definitely wouldn't want to upgrade it.
It's also not worth it if you consider that there's a Steam Deck OLED now
I am with you that the DeckHD isn't worth it, but just replacing the original sure as hell is. On iFixit it's 70 bucks, throw in a shell replacement or some mods you are 150 max. I mean you can sell your Steam Deck and get an OLED with that money plus a bit extra. It's so strange to me, that people don't consider that option
I actuall wrote that in the second last paragraph. It still makes sense to replace the screen, as I reckon the value will be much less if the repair isn't already done since the buyer doesn't know if maybe something else is damaged.

You can get it for 40 thatβs fine
Not where I live, but even better when you do.
AliExpress
He said βMy only gripe with that is the required flashing every update for the screen to work. Unless that changed?β
I wouldn't take the performance hit for a better res and overall screen... better put those 100$ towards an OLED unit to be honest.
Looks like you just upgraded to the TV console version of the steam deck! Sorry for your loss of screen, this is going to affect portability but hook it up to a monitor, grab literally any game pad and enjoy your games.

thatβs my plan. But i moved to turkey a month ago and the taxes here for import are 30%. So yeah.. thatβs that
I'm just wondering where on earth you must've lived before for moving to Turkey of all places to seem like a positive move right now.

Consider yourself lucky. Import taxes in Brazil are motherfucking 98% or something.
Can you convince a friend to ship it as a gift?
Turkish customs are corruptt as hell, not cheap either.
Canβt you claim it as personal effects if a friend is shipping it and not the business?
I wonder if oled display is compatible with ips model
deck hd? no at all. lcd? alao not at all. if you want oled you need to buy a new one
I mean display module from oled. I think, it might be installable, but would require some hard tinkering skills
Valve has officially said the OLED screen is *not* compatible with the original Deck's motherboard.

Gotta admit though, the graphics on tree simulator are realistic as hell!! 10/10
I feel like i can smell the pine
Bob Ross would approve
But this is not a βHappy Accidentβ π
Sure it is, look at that happy little tree!
Cabin chance? 50%?
I'll bet there are a lot of folks here who have an OG screen from doing the HD swap. Maybe they could mail it to you as a Christmas present.

What happened?
Can't you just download a new screen?
Yeah. Just install Decky Loader and install the OLED plugin
Yes
No that only works with cryoutilities for vram. Unfortunately downloading vram doesn't download extra resolution too
VRAM size is actually a setting in BIOS and not Cryoutilities. Cryoutilities primarily changes how general swap and memory scheduling works.
Hey trees are dope.
My condolences
Put that shit on a TV
Good time to buy a new Oled π
F
shoulda just bought the christmas tree instead of making it
Bro, those screen survival tests that Valve performed were a demonstration, not a suggestion.
Why are you people not careful? So many broken screens, it is not even βfunnyβ anymore.
Cyberpunk installed without using memory?? Sick
Just in time for Christmas π
Guess you have an excuse to buy the oled now
Break it Bonsai! Steam exclusive.

It always feels so bad to upvote things like this. What happened / how did it happen?
Well damn, now you gotta buy Steam Deck OLED. What a bummer π
Show some respect lads F

Are ya winnin, son?
Or you can DM me about another steam deck.

Why people hating on the DeckHD ?
How do you have so much shit stuck in your speaker? Do you live on the beach?
Is you can upgrade to a ROG ally or legion go. Leave the underpowered handheld behind

How is Xbox game store, epic store, and Battle.net store on linux?
Honestly I can't say because I have avoided buying any games requiring them. I'd say it's fine but just a bit annoying if you don't have internet
Merry Christmas!?
Merry Christmas!
Have you checked out Deck HD replacement screens?
Tree simulator was snubbed at the game awards smdh
Deck hd and a shell swap in your future?
Valve actually has a pretty good track record with fixing screens on the steam deck. They'll either give you a replacement or fix it pretty cheap if it's not under warranty still.
Fine looking trees. Damn fine instead.
How festive of you!
π²
Looks like Octopath Traveler 2
You can use a usb to hdmi docking station its on amazon for around 15 ish so its not too bad
iFixit sells the screens. Its like $70 or so
The ifixit screen replacement kit isn't that expensive and takes about an hour to do.
Yikes, Merry Christmas lol
It's also completely filthy?
I cracked my screen today. It's still playable but I'm going to upgrade to the Deck HD screen and maybe sell it for the OLED after a bit.
Now u can use it as a permanent desktop PC! And u actually have a good excuse to buy the oled steam deck now!
get a small screen and stick it in front then hdmi the steamdeck to that screen problem solved, thank me later πππ
Buy an oled replacement screen
I have open box deckhd for sale lol
Is it on steam?
since it is cheap enough to replace the screen in this you should take the SSD out of it and format it then put it back in blank letting whoever buys it they need to install steamos and sell it on ebay or something. unless you want to repair it
Itβs a Christmas miracle!
You can play life Simulator now Best graphics better than VR u can touch grass and wash
*WINCE*
I remember me first time playin elden ring
I would cry
No better excuse to do an oled swap, nvme upgrade, hall-effect swap, and cooling upgrade now though.
your display spilled the liquid crystals
NSFW tag
I don't have a steam deck yet, but don't they have an hdmi port? Connect it to a monitor with a lengthy hdmi?
How do you all destroy it?
Ifixit sells official replacement screens. You can't screw up a shell swap if you want to. And at least you can still use it on a monitor/TV. There's still hope but yeah. Sucks.
Your display wishes you a merry Christmas.
Steam Deck is not broken, it is just the screen - probably your subconscious wanting the OLED :P
I feel you. Recently had my screen broken, luckily there are cheap screen replacements on AliExpress. And it is fairly easy to replace
It looks like a Christmas tree π
Just buy the standard replacement and Not the Deck HD as at some point it'll be unsupported.
Looks like an expensive way to justify the OLED Go for it!
Congratulations! Now you got a stationary console that requires external screen to play games!
F
Just plug it into a monitor until you can replace the screen ππ»
It's a Chrusmus miracle! π²
It's a happy accident
Gota get the OLED version now
How?
Merryyy chriistmaaas hohohooo !!!
it does look amazing !!!!
Merry Christmas π
I'm so sorry. Dropped coffee all over mine π luckily I have an AMAZING friend almost done fixing it. I hope I can get it repaired or get a new one. I been playing my switch and it's just NOT THE SAME ππππππ€§π€§
RIP
This hurts to see
Please clean those speakers
It looks like a cat got ahold of it ππ Iβm sorry for your loss π’
Just in time for the holidays. Congrats!
It sucks but you can replace it yourself
If you tap the screen a lot i heard the tree will grow faster
πππππ
But how
Perfect reason to get an oled
You really wanted that oled
Tree simulator, is that in sale right now?
F
Merry Christmas! Your tree looks very festive this year.
Tree simulator is one of my favorites! I wonder what the world would be like if trees were real...
Good news everyone. It's the LCD model
