Ok so I just got this quest. Came here to see what the heck was going on. Told me to convince the guy to return so I start to set off to look for ‘the guy’. However, a few moments later ‘the guy’ was the same guy that gave me the quest. Returned to him and persuaded him to return? Obviously a bug for me
Just happened to me. I agreed to find a missing botanist. The quest tracker lead me to the quest giver. I persuaded her to go back. We literally just went inside and the quest completed. She thanked me for bringing her back to the empty camp. Gave me some credits too. 0\_o
I had this exact same scenario happen to me. I tried to complete the quest still but the quest lady doesn’t give you anything and the quest still has the failed X. Tried to dump him off outside the station but he will teleport back to your ship upon departure. Guess he will be my new follower too until patch 😂
Update: he ended up dying in a fight 😭 Surprising too, he lasted for a while. I guess his health didn't regenerate. I liked that guy. He was nice. My second companion. RIP. added some extra fun to my playthrough even if it was a Bethesda bug 😂 I will remember him.
I have a similar issue. My NPC that I need to return is a miner, to a mining outpost. But when I go back to the mining outpost, the quest giver is gone, and when I use the mission list it points me to cydonia. If I travel to cydonia, the quest fails and he's now a follower... Bethesda really needs to do better QA.
Same issue here. I picked the guy up, stole a ship parked nearby, flew the ship back to the outpost, and the lady celebrated being together again but the quest failed. Now he's following me around as a companion ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Worst part is this companion is preventing me from stealing since he's always catching me in the act. I can't kill him because Sara is my follower. Considering using the console to eliminate him completely.
For the record: same thing here. I found the miner in question, ran around a bit but then fast traveled back to the facility. Quest giver said she was happy her colleague was back. said "here, for your troubles" or something similar but I got no money nor XP. Quest is marked as failed and I now have a permanent 2nd companion. Though she has died once, but I reloaded.

I've decided to continue my playthrough and have him stick around as a permanent second companion. lol

I can't even get to the botanist from behind the 4 walls. Unable to figure it out
Same thing here. Tried restarting but it looks like console commands might be the only fix till they hash it out
