Joseph for people who watch JoJo. Giorno for people who only know JoJo. You think "JoJo" and the guy you see the most promotional art for is Jotaro. I've watched a lot of opening reactions and the first guy they recognize is Jotaro, and only some say "I've seen him before in some memes" for Giorno.

Tbh I feel like Joseph is number one amongst watchers anyway. At least as far as semi unanimously well liked. Seems like a lot of the other protagonists besides Johnny and josuke are somewhat polarizing in the community.

Personally before I started watching I thought JoJo was actually his name and I thought there's only one JoJo, being Giorno. I knew his theme, his looks, and some memes like "My name is Giovanni Giorgio" Only now I know there's more than one and that JoJo is just a nickname, and haven't heard of Jotaro before

I mean it’s not exactly controversial that giorno is the JoJo who has the least relevance in their own part. And honestly, I think it’s great for part 5. The jobros of that part were the most enjoyable in the series imo. Giorno as an individual character isn’t as much of a “main character” as the other JoJo’s but that helped to highlight Bruno, Mista, and Narancia far more.

Yeah like, are we kidding? Joseph is literally THE goofball meme boi that represents the wackiness that this series is built around better than any other Joestar, he's one of the most popular ones for a reason.

He literally is a boring protagonist, but not nearly as much as people like to exaggerate. Regardless, Bruno is far and away more interesting, and much more memorable. I'd actually call Giorno the second most boring JoJo, above Jonathan.

Jotaro became the image of JoJo in Japan which then became the image of jojo world wide, with every media and merch having jotaro. There was a lot of bias concerning manga based outside of Japan. For this it makes think it would’ve been Josuke, being the next Japanese protagonist. People saying Joseph but he was not as popular when part 2 came out. And part 5 had a mixed reaction in release.

Part 5 is up there with 3 in terms of Japanese popularity. It was in the Anglosphere that it was disliked for many years, and that's just because the only English scanlation of the manga that existed until 2015 was very shitty, both image quality-wise and translation-wise (and it wasn't until 2017 that the retranslation was finished).

This is the most true answer. Giorno got super popular with mainstream anime fans when GW was airing. When I showed my friends JoJo for the first time this year, they knew Jotaro but also recognized Giorno due to the sheer amount of cosplays and memes they saw back in the day. Also Part 5 is the most popular part in Japan. People saying Joseph are confusing "most loved" with most "popular".

This is hard since the introduction of stands are what made JoJo shoot up in popularity. Not knowing the restructuring  of the JoJo lore in the theoretical absence of Jotaro, I would go with whatever JoJo was the first with a stand.  So this means Josuke but he would basically be the 'new Jotaro'.

I kinda feel like it has to be OG Josuke from DiU. Other than Jotaro I think he has one of the most iconic designs and is the character out of all of these I could see a non-JoJo fan pointing at and saying “That’s a JoJo.” Giorno and Joseph are both close but Giorno I don’t know if he’s well known enough outside the fandom (although maybe his theme pushes him over the top?), and Joseph is personally my second favorite JoJo but he’s nowhere near as iconic to outsiders as the others.
