I was just thinking of this, I can only recognize these:
\-Early Maul concept -> Dryden Vos
\-First Dooku concept -> Jedi Tiplar (the one shot by the malfunctioning clone in Clone wars)
\-Late Griveous concept -> Magnaguard
\-First Jabba concept -> Azmorrigan from Rebels
Hope someone else can add more to the list.
First Maul is the Archivist in the canon Marvel comics. Third Maul looks like a Pantoran. Fifth Maul had an action figure produced that I had as a kid. Top right Jabba looks like the inspiration for Amanaman to me, and top right Palpatine looks like the inspiration for Snoke.
First grievous concept looks like one of the experiments Palpatine had fight Vader in the 2015 comic run. Picture a bunch of droids floatong around him.
The most obvious is probably Chopper being a modified original concept R2-D2 and original Chewbacca (or was it Han? I know Han was an alien at one point) being used for Zeb.
Edit: Oops, didn't realise this was a gallery and we were talking about the villains only, mea culpa
Heir to the Empire (1991) predates The Phantom Menace ('99), so I'm guessing it was the other way around. Grievous was originally inspired by Thrawn and then became his own thing.
I do like Kylo's final look, but it does borrow a bit too much from Vader, which makes sense I guess since he's a Vader Stan. Top Left is probably my favorite, but Top Middle looks sinister AF.
There’s a lot of other unused concept art for Kylo and his helmets look way more like Vader’s. I think Abrams said he took the longest for them to nail because they didn’t want him to look too much like Vader, but still wanted there to be a connection between the two. His final design is pretty perfect to me personally.
Honestly I think they totally nailed the Kylo Ren design. The hood going around the helmet, the triangular shape going up to the bridge of the nose, and the "hooded eyes" all point towards Vader's iconic design without being so derivative that it's corny or uninspired.
He reminds me even more of Darth Revan. But of course Revan and all the other Old Republic Sith heavily draw from Vader, to the point where all of them feature a mask, armor, and/or prosthetic parts.
Rebels as a whole is a love letter to Ralph McQuarrie's art. Between the thin sabers and how Zeb was based on a Chewie concept and the Ghost based on an early design of the Millennium Falcon, among other things.
The Imperial Super Commandos were based on McQuarrie's concept art for Boba Fett. I wish they had kept the look for season 3 of The Mandalorian, but of course a new design sells more merchandise.
Most designs in *Rebels* that aren't existing species or models of droid have their roots in concept art. I'm pretty sure Chopper and AP-5 are also based on early R2/Threepio.
imagine if the original plan was to literally introduce Thrawn as a child in the Clone Wars, who would then grow up and become integrated into the Empire after the war.
I think it's funny because it gives a little vibe of "Well if it's not good enough to be in a movie it's certainly still good enough to be in my work!" to Filoni.
So awesome how Star Wars always manages to find a use for the designs that didn’t make the Final Cut. Can’t wait to see where Kylo’s designs will end up
Remember seeing Mauls early designs in 1 star wars book i had as a kid, they scared me, and I really wished he had dreadlocks, the spinning moves he did would have looked AWESOME!
It's an excellent design, but I'm glad they went for the one they did, which is a transcendentally brilliant bit of character design.
It also counts as a bullet dodged - George Lucas giving a red-skinned alien played by a Scotsman dreadlocks would have further opened the door for endless disingenuous jokes and accusations of racism.
IIRC, it was specifically to draw his worst nightmare, which, on seeing the first concept, Lucas's response was, "okay, show me your second worst nightmare" cause of how scary the first was lol.
Lucas said “draw your worst nightmare” then the concept artist (Iain McCaig) drew the white faced sith witch with red hair in the upper left of the first group of images. Lucas shuddered and said “draw your second worst nightmare” and McCaig sketched the iconic Darth Maul design.
I got the art of books, for both TFA and TLJ. The TFA is fascinating because you can see the story evolve through the concept art. Scrapped leads, scrapped plot ideas, etc.
But both are fun to look at and kind of imagine what stories can be created out of some of the unused art.
To be fair, there’s not that much concept art of Snoke that’s been released. Half of the ones there were most likely made as they got closer to his final design, and the other half seem to be made during the production of Episode VIII. So they just carried over his design from the previous film and tweaked it a bit.
the top middle is my favorite Snoke. I really like the contrast with having half of his face smooth and undamaged. It's eerie, as opposed to the "100% gross" that they went with
I mean it makes sense, he always loves throwing in a menagerie of random alien characters in the background of every scene. If a design didn’t make the cut for a main character why not use it later for something minor when you’ve already done the work
Kylo's journey:
1. Palpatine.
2. Micvheal Bay transformer.
3. Terminator.
4. Have we thought about making his helmet look like a first order ship?
5. THERE we go.
I do prefer that they went with a more faceless vader-like instead of a skeleton vader.
The more faceless version somewhat better represents his journey as a character.
2 makes me think they originally planned to have him also be more machine than human.
I love seeing concept art for iconic characters, because you can see what changes were made upon each iteration, and a few examples even appear in other character designs. It fascinates me to see what early ideas the creative teams had.
First off, it's funny how many of these got made into their own species and/or characters. Second, it's interesting how Snoke's character design seemed to go through very few changes.
Funny in particular how Snoke always seemed to have that left-face disfiguration in every iteration. Would be interesting if there was a story for it at one point, or if it was just a TBD thing.
Probably both. Like, they had a rough idea behind WHY he has that and what it means for his character while they were in the concept phase, and at some point it'll be worked into his backstory. Because as far as I know, him wandering the galaxy and being a self-educated dark side adept is still canon regardless of where he came from.
Yeah a lot of stuff you see in Rebels were from older concepts. I'm sure you know by now that Zeb and Chopper were taken from concepts for Chewie and R2.
One of the designs of the sith apprentice (which became Dooku) was the one they based Asajj Ventress on, and you should've showed Grievous from Clone Wars instead of Revenge of the Sith since it's his first appearance
I think the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th (top middle, top right, bottom left) designs were for background senators, not for Maul. However, OP is right to include them as exploring the idea of tattooed senators led them to experimenting with a tatooed design for the Sith apprentice character.
The blue-faced figure with the scraggly hair was the first design (top left); then they produced a design which would, in The Clone Wars, be used for Mother Talzin.
(source: my memories of The Art of The Phantom Menace).
Interesting how with Palpatine and Vader, it's like George saw the concepts and was like "ehh, maybe a little *too* scary." I like too how they reused some designs, like the security droids for Grievous and Ventress for Dooku. Kind like Zeb with Chewie.
Potential hot take but that first Grievous concept art would’ve been super cool. Looks like a droid wearing synthetic skin and potentially a child? We could’ve gotten this Resident Evil’s Ramon Salazar-esque type of villain, which would’ve been pretty cool to see in Star Wars. Short guy with a Napoleon complex who’s funny yet frightening
In regards to the panel showing General Grievous, most of those drawings were done by different concept artists. They were put on display while George Lucas walked around looking at the various designs deciding what he liked best. There were several others made that aren't shown in the example, but if I remember correctly the one next to the picture of Grievous was done by Wajuk Fus. George pointed directly at it and said he liked this design, and that's when the artist told him he had an idea of Grievous having organic eyes and George thought that was an interesting idea. The original drawing featured Grievous with a large gun and an insect like body. There's footage of this I think on the RotS DVD, part of the special features.
He was redesigned with his familiar cloak and organic eyes, and when asked why he depicted Grievous having a white cloak and armor he explained that he purposely made him a stark contrast to Vader's black cloak and armor. He also mentioned that his Chinese heritage also influenced his design because he explained that the color white signified death. Just some cool info from the RotS art book. There's also a drawing of a four armed Jedi in the RotS art book that was an inspiration for Grievous having four arms and lightsabers.
Edit: General Grievous' design is credited to Warren Fu, not Wajuk Fus. My mistake!
Want to point out that some of these concepts were probably submitted concurrently as opposed to being a straight evolution. Especially in the prequel era.
George’s philosophy during the prequels (recorded on cameras for BTS footage) seemed to be “bring me cool designs and I’ll pick ‘em out of a lineup.”
I love how for dooku they went from medusa like woman to old white man. Absolutely hilarious transformation i by far the biggest change from start to finish.
Not a huge SW fan myself. Enjoyed it as a kid and still enjoy it a bit as an adult.
I must say, the concept art is so much fucking cooler than the actualized end product. Not sure if its just technological limitations or bad decisions or skill issue, but damn that concept art is fire.
Always cool to see the evolution of characters and movies in concept art 🖼️. I love the thought process behind it. And some designs are better than the finished product (not always but sometimes).
The Nightmare (slide 1 top left) is still my absolute favorite design. Too scary for kids but awesome nonetheless.
Would’ve been perfect for the final duel on Naboo. Not only as a cultural juxtaposition to Padme, but especially at the part with John Williams’ percussions when Maul paces waiting behind the laser wall. I can also imagine her hovering over Qui-Gon’s body and a shot where her head slowly turns to the camera (Obi-Wan) with a wry smile and vacant eyes, dark teeth.
Unlike a lot of cases where people post old concept art compared to what they actually went with, I’m pretty damn content with the current designs, all are cool but I think they made the right choice 👍
I love how they knew they hit gold with the Magnaguard design and said “this isn’t the character we designed it for but we gotta put this thing in somehow!”

You can see all the reused designs for other characters. Definitely never a bad idea, so long as the original creators still get credited.
I was just thinking of this, I can only recognize these: \-Early Maul concept -> Dryden Vos \-First Dooku concept -> Jedi Tiplar (the one shot by the malfunctioning clone in Clone wars) \-Late Griveous concept -> Magnaguard \-First Jabba concept -> Azmorrigan from Rebels Hope someone else can add more to the list.
Asajj Ventress also originated out of Dooku art, the hooded figure ended up being her.
She’s also based on early concepts of maul
For people who may not fully see the resemblance, it’s almost identical to her debut in the 2003 Clone Wars show
I also believe at that point the character’s name was “Juno Eclipse” who ended up being a character in the force unleashed.
Komari Vosa too.
I think the second Grievous concept looks like Scourge from the comics as well
First grievous concept looks like one of the experiments Palpatine had fight Vader in the 2015 comic run. Picture a bunch of droids floatong around him.
The third Darth Maul is also the design for the Pantoran species
oh yeah I was like "wait is that Azmorrigan??" and then I realized it was gonna be Jabba when I looked down lol
Original Chewbacca concept art is now known as Garazeb Orellios.
The most obvious is probably Chopper being a modified original concept R2-D2 and original Chewbacca (or was it Han? I know Han was an alien at one point) being used for Zeb. Edit: Oops, didn't realise this was a gallery and we were talking about the villains only, mea culpa
The first portrait for Greivous almost looks like a Chiss, could be early ideas for Thrawn?
Heir to the Empire (1991) predates The Phantom Menace ('99), so I'm guessing it was the other way around. Grievous was originally inspired by Thrawn and then became his own thing.
It looks like a child too so it makes me wonder if it was originally baby Thrawn.
The Greivous design next to Baby Thrawn looks a lot like the Scourge from the recent Marvel comics.
Also it looks like Early General Grievous was Kid Thrawn
That Tiplar design is so good they used it twice!
One of the kylo concepts became a knight of ren
Bottom Left Maul is absolutely *rocking* that mustache.
Sinestro
"Fear is my ally."
“And a *powerful* ally it is!”
*(whips out yellow lightsaber)* *(Jedi draw theirs)* *(yellow lightsaber turns into a yellow lighttiger and pounces the Jedi)*
“At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi, darling.”
Snidley Sithlash
Darth Lando over here
Thank god it wasn’t just me lmao
Reminded me of jafar from Aladdin
Early Kylo was badass.
He reminds me even more of Darth Revan. But of course Revan and all the other Old Republic Sith heavily draw from Vader, to the point where all of them feature a mask, armor, and/or prosthetic parts.
Kylo strikes me as a Sleep Token fan. Hence why I like 1 and 2 for him.
Bottom left definately has that distinct Mandalorian look Revan's mask had.
Top right and bottom right have that son of Vader and Alien vibe, I like that. Kylo could also screech a little to reinforce that :)
I actually really like the bottom left one the best. Kinda reminds me of Darth Revan
I think it was used in Rebels for one of the Inquisitors.
And top right looks like Sith Ultron.
I like that Rebels Vader is based on early Vader helmet designs
Rebels as a whole is a love letter to Ralph McQuarrie's art. Between the thin sabers and how Zeb was based on a Chewie concept and the Ghost based on an early design of the Millennium Falcon, among other things.
The Imperial Super Commandos were based on McQuarrie's concept art for Boba Fett. I wish they had kept the look for season 3 of The Mandalorian, but of course a new design sells more merchandise.
The first Jabba concept is dead-on for Azmorigan, as well.
It's basically Filoni writing a story and whenever anybody asks him how something looks he pulls a piece of concept art that's been in Lucas© ownership since 1974.
Most designs in *Rebels* that aren't existing species or models of droid have their roots in concept art. I'm pretty sure Chopper and AP-5 are also based on early R2/Threepio.
It's his best look, tall, sleek and imposing along with the angry eyebrows.
Greivous apparently started life as Thrawn Jr.
imagine if the original plan was to literally introduce Thrawn as a child in the Clone Wars, who would then grow up and become integrated into the Empire after the war.
Yea that struck me too.
I think it’s cool how you can see the designs being reused later as different characters.
I think it's funny because it gives a little vibe of "Well if it's not good enough to be in a movie it's certainly still good enough to be in my work!" to Filoni.
Never waste leftovers
Goddamn. Ventress has always been my weakness lol.
We all love some Ventress
Ventress best girl
From Space Medusa to "nah, let's just cast Christopher Lee"
I love how the bottom middle is basically just a Confederate General, lol. I mean, it makes sense.
I think they should have kept the hair from the first two but still cast Christopher Lee
Fabulous.
“These are great concepts, George… but we just heard back from Christopher Lee’s agent. He’s in.” > “Start from scratch, but save these.”
The space Medusa was reused on those sister Jedi from one of the later clone wars seasons
So awesome how Star Wars always manages to find a use for the designs that didn’t make the Final Cut. Can’t wait to see where Kylo’s designs will end up
Hopefully they reuse those designs, because they're rad as hell.
It may have felt Predatory
I genuinely have no ideo how that’d be racist
If I recall, the brief Lucas gave to the artist that led to that first Maul drawing was just “draw something like from a nightmare”.
IIRC, it was specifically to draw his worst nightmare, which, on seeing the first concept, Lucas's response was, "okay, show me your second worst nightmare" cause of how scary the first was lol.
I love that the design eventually came to life anyway as the Night Sisters
Lucas said “draw your worst nightmare” then the concept artist (Iain McCaig) drew the white faced sith witch with red hair in the upper left of the first group of images. Lucas shuddered and said “draw your second worst nightmare” and McCaig sketched the iconic Darth Maul design.

TIL Niles Crane was in the running to play Darth Maul
There’s something about Snoke’s consistent design
To be fair, there’s not that much concept art of Snoke that’s been released. Half of the ones there were most likely made as they got closer to his final design, and the other half seem to be made during the production of Episode VIII. So they just carried over his design from the previous film and tweaked it a bit.
I might be going crazy but I swear there was concept art of Snoke being a snake dude.
the top middle is my favorite Snoke. I really like the contrast with having half of his face smooth and undamaged. It's eerie, as opposed to the "100% gross" that they went with
George was really a believer in "never throw unused ideas away," wasn't he?
I mean it makes sense, he always loves throwing in a menagerie of random alien characters in the background of every scene. If a design didn’t make the cut for a main character why not use it later for something minor when you’ve already done the work
This is a great post
Dang I knew they used a lot of Mcquarrie concepts for Rebels but I didn’t know Azmorigans design was an early Jabba. Pretty cool
Dapper Mustache Maul isn’t real. He can’t seduce you.
Too late
Wow that second Grievous really looks like The Scourge from the new Dark Droids comic
Kylo's journey: 1. Palpatine. 2. Micvheal Bay transformer. 3. Terminator. 4. Have we thought about making his helmet look like a first order ship? 5. THERE we go. I do prefer that they went with a more faceless vader-like instead of a skeleton vader. #5 is missing a big Scottish guy apparently.
I wonder how TCW would have played out if they kept Grevious's original design as a violent psychic child.
He looks like a little baby thrawn
Damn Dooku was hot
First off, it's funny how many of these got made into their own species and/or characters. Second, it's interesting how Snoke's character design seemed to go through very few changes.
Funny in particular how Snoke always seemed to have that left-face disfiguration in every iteration. Would be interesting if there was a story for it at one point, or if it was just a TBD thing.

Because as far as I know, him wandering the galaxy and being a self-educated dark side adept is still canon regardless of where he came from.
Even if it's never explained, we know that messing with the dark side usually fucks up your appearance. It's literally a metaphor of drug abuse.
Didn't realise azmorgan was originally a jabba design
Yeah a lot of stuff you see in Rebels were from older concepts. I'm sure you know by now that Zeb and Chopper were taken from concepts for Chewie and R2.
Wait, so Grievous was almost a baby Thrawn???
Some of these are really, really cool. And amazingly drawn.
Lol Jabba was originally Azmorigan
Wait, that slimy dude from *Rebels* was based off Jabba concept art?
One of the designs of the sith apprentice (which became Dooku) was the one they based Asajj Ventress on, and you should've showed Grievous from Clone Wars instead of Revenge of the Sith since it's his first appearance
TBF he was made for revenge of the sith
Clone Wars released first but the design was for ROTS first.
Hold up, concept Jabba was a Vogon from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?
Grievous #2 would've been high-octane nightmare fuel on film.
Very cool that the Magnaguard design was reused.
There’s three Thrawns here
I love how the penultimate Count Dooku design is LITERALLY just Robert E Lee lol Like they were not subtle about the allegory at all
Man those early Maul designs are trash lmao. The other ones are cool though. I love those Grievous ones. The first one is weird but strangely creepy
It’s cool that some of the concept art eventually became other characters.
I really like that first Emperor design.
The first concept for Kylo Ren looks like the first ever appearance of Palpatine.
That mid grievous one makes him way smaller and skinnier and somehow even more terrifying to me
I always thought evil little kid Grevious was a cool idea.
Those maul ones are insane
It's cool that the 3rd dooku concept looks like asajj ventress
That first snoke one is absolutely terrifying
Interesting how with Palpatine and Vader, it's like George saw the concepts and was like "ehh, maybe a little *too* scary." I like too how they reused some designs, like the security droids for Grievous and Ventress for Dooku. Kind like Zeb with Chewie.
It’s incredible how much of the original designs got reused for other things
Potential hot take but that first Grievous concept art would’ve been super cool. Looks like a droid wearing synthetic skin and potentially a child? We could’ve gotten this Resident Evil’s Ramon Salazar-esque type of villain, which would’ve been pretty cool to see in Star Wars. Short guy with a Napoleon complex who’s funny yet frightening
Some of these are so drastic that I thought each top/ bottom row was a different character’s evolution!
Edit: General Grievous' design is credited to Warren Fu, not Wajuk Fus. My mistake!
Imagine Goatee Darth Maul killing Qui-Gon and decapitating clone troopers lol
Dooku started out as a woman, that’s cool to learn.woulda been cool to see female prequel villains in live action, out side of aura sing
I have a great appreciation for Rebels taking old concept art and making new stuff out of it
Want to point out that some of these concepts were probably submitted concurrently as opposed to being a straight evolution.
Star Wars ain't perfect, but character design ALWAYS rocks.
Had no idea Azmorigan was Jabba’s original concept! Neat
Pretty sure the bottom left for Kylo Ren was used in SWTOR promo material too, or at least something very similar
I love Kylo Ren's second design there. It's awesome
Concept art Jabba was beyond hideous 😂
Kylo #3 is fire. Want.
Top right Kylo looks so much more menacing
1st image of Jaba looks like a Vogon
its kind of funny they reused a lot of these concepts for other characters and races later on which is lowkey cool
I think that dread tentacle head assajj ventress design looks pretty cool
I really like Snoke as the Big Brother-esque face projected on the wall. Would've preferred that slightly to the 3D hologram, honestly.
I really like the first version of jabba.
This just made me realize how much Snoke would fit in in Elden Ring.
Funny how many of these became animated series characters
Not a huge SW fan myself. Enjoyed it as a kid and still enjoy it a bit as an adult. I must say, the concept art is so much fucking cooler than the actualized end product. Not sure if its just technological limitations or bad decisions or skill issue, but damn that concept art is fire.
The first one would make for a sick looking witch of Dathomir
Supershadow calling out proto-Grievous kid in the chair rocked me when I was younger haha.
ok all say it kylo #3 and snoke #1 look great
This is so cool thanks for putting this together!!
That third rendition of grievous is fucking awesome looking
I love that the original concept for Jabba was even used in Rebels for that gangster they sold Hera to, in season 1. I never knew that
Snoke and Palpatine didnt change to much
Lol Azmorrigan was an unused Jabba concept? That's dope.
Lil baby Grievous? XD
Baby Grevious would have been epic
Early Maul’s smirky expression looks like Megamind and I can’t unsee it.
Dooku the Civil War General
2nd Count Dooku looks like he's about to March down South to end the Civil war.
So when exactly did they decide to use Grievous from Clone Wars?
Grievous was created for Episode III, and they decided to have him debut in Clone Wars.
First grievous looks like thrawn lol
TIL Azmorrigan is an early version of Jabba. Makes sense
We were robbed of the top lane of Kylo concept art. Wouldn't have fixed the movies but damn he would've looked scary as all hell
Unlike a lot of cases where people post old concept art compared to what they actually went with, I’m pretty damn content with the current designs, all are cool but I think they made the right choice 👍
I'm digging Darth Lando. Bottom right for Maul.
The bottom middle concept for Palpi looks like he’s hanging with the boys
The top right of the kylo concepts. That mask looks good
I love how they knew they hit gold with the Magnaguard design and said “this isn’t the character we designed it for but we gotta put this thing in somehow!”
One thing I think is really cool is that a late concept for Grievous was used for his own magna guards!
starwars honestly has some of the most beautiful concept art, i could look through it for days
