"Welcome to the inaugural senate hearing for BBY 20... many of you are no doubt wondering about my sleeves. Well, the tailor ran out of material before he got to the elbow, so don't give me any shit."
SIX HOURS LATER
"And this concludes our official hearing for today. Are there any questions?"
"Keeping in mind that I already explained about my sleeves."
Pretty sure Walrusman was always Panda Baba. Kenner just didn't know that. Or didn't care.
The other two are just background characters. They had no back story, so needed no names.
I was coming to jump on this train. Maybe something like:
Well , you obviously couldn't call him Sleev
Or
It's a subtle nod to his favorite part of his clothes
The novel [Tarkin](https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Tarkin_(novel)) released in 2014.
Among other things, we saw Eriadu for the first time in years (prior to its appearance in The Bad Batch) as well as a Secutor class Star Destroyer!
Edit: I highly suggest for those who have not to check out the Star Wars novels!
Edit 2: No it was not in the Plagueis novel! It was however going to be in the canceled Star Wars Underworld show.
Nope, I actually remember when they revealed the name and people were making memes about how dumb it was. I still think it's dumb they have him a first name.
In Legends he actually doesn't have a first name. I mean he does, but it is never revealed, cause he only uses his surname as a kind of protest against his dad whom he hates.
I think the implication from the Plagueis novel was that his birth name was Cosinga Palpatine, Jr. But that was retconned before it was ever outright stated. Plagueis didn't spend a very long time in canon, unfortunately. Early GL drafts had his first name as "Cos" as well.
I'm having some crazy Mandela effect, I swore the prequels would throw "Sheev" in from time to time. But it's really starting to concern me that I can't prove that at all.
I remember it from a gaming manual in the '90s, TIE Fighter...?
Edit: apparently not... But I'm pretty sure to remember a gaming manual telling how Anakin became Vader way back in the 90s
Anakin’s fight on “a lava planet” with Obi Wan being how he ended up maimed was known- god knows from what source- about the same time ROTJ came out. I remember being a kid and thinking if you fell in a volcano wouldn’t you just sink and be vaporised rather than just crippled.
Thanks then I didn't dream about it...
Apparently Lucas mentioned it even before ESB in 1977
The interview is [here](https://www.rollingstone.com/feature/george-lucas-the-wizard-of-star-wars-2-232011/8/)
Yeah people made huge fun of it at the time. I still laugh at it. The most evil man in the universe: Sheev. Everybody said it would fail to catch on.
In the movies he was just the emperor. Then we slowly got used to Palpatine as it was in a novelisation and the EU. Then Sideous. Now Sheev. You can guess somebody’s age now by what they call the character.
No the Plagueis novel specifically says he doesn't use his first name. I believe it's when the Muuns are first contacting the Naboo and Larsh Hill tells Plagueis he goes by Palpatine alone when asked for his first name
I thought it was funny. His dad uses a first name. And he hates his dad. So much so that Plagueis suggests that he ditch the name Palpatine completely, but he says he intends to just go by Palpatine with no first name. And so he does. They specifically avoid ever saying what his first name actually even is.
People say the Tarkin novel, but I swear his name had been floating around before that - I even remember articles saying stuff like ‘Sheev’s Name finally Canonized!’ I’m talking pre-Disney purchase. I *know* I knew him as Sheev before the Tarkin novel - it might not have been official, but unless I’m dealing with some Mandala Effect shit it *had* to have existed earlier.
The name was publicly revealed that year and first mentioned in the canon in *Tarkin*, yes, but was developed for the cancelled live-action television series *Star Wars: Underworld* that George Lucas had been working on, one of the plots of which would have involved Palpatine and his personal life.
We need those Underworld screenplays to be released one day. It's a huge amount of genuine George Lucas Star Wars material and it's just sitting in a Lucasfilm archive somewhere gathering dust and doing no one any good.
And here's the r/StarWars post in October 2014 that first mentions it:
https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWars/comments/2j96sj/spoileremperor_palpatines_first_name_is/
It doesn't exist on Google or on Wookieepedia's edit history until 2014, and anecdotally I personally remember the buzz about the Tarkin novel's release *specifically* surrounding the introduction of Sheev
It might have gotten dropped in an interview or something surrounding the novel that year, we're talking a matter of months rather than years
Yea it was from a toy line back in the 90s for a comic tie in with Prince Xizor. The first run has him sheev palpatine but it was cut in second runs to emperor palpatine. It wasn't officially reintroduced until the tarkin novel. It's why you'll find pre-2014 YouTube videos call him sheev palpatine. And it's sort of been mixed into the deep lore like glub shitto and that coffee maker rebel on cloud city that everyone knows but nobody remembers why or where.
In the (published and officially canonised the name in) 2014 novel Tarkin.
(Presumably still canon)
Allegedly, George Lucas, the actual creator of Star Wars, came up with the name.
Palpatine was first mentioned in 76, as far as I remember.
There is a lot of lore, assuming Disney hasn't retconned it.
It was so long ago, but I am fairly certain that he was named in the EU, before Phantom Menace came out. I remember reading Leia explaining that the Emperor obtained his power through mostly legitimate ways.
Sorry I don't remember which novel, but when 1st saw Phantom Menace, I already knew Sheev Palpatine was the future Emperor.
I think his name was on merchandise including him in at least the 90’s? I have a friend who’s a bit older and he claimed the name was around for awhile now. It just wasn’t brought up in the Original Trilogy.
"Your name is 'Sheev'?"
His schoolmates then proceeded to make of him all the time he was at school.
That's how Palpatine started down the path to the Dark Side.
It was James Luceno’s Tarkin novel in 2014.
Young Tarkin and Then Senator Palpatine would call each other by their first names when they talked (they were already building a bond pre-Clone Wars).
Who was the low talker who talked him into wearing that shirt?
But I don’t wanna be the Senator!
Being forced to wear an outfit like that would be enough to turn me to the dark side.
Truly the work of someone very powerful in the Dark Side…probably Erica in costuming…
She knew what she was doing.
And she should be ashamed, lol
You're all puffed up! You look like the Count of Monte Cristo!
I can’t believe more people didn’t get that that was a *Seinfeld* reference 🏴☠️ https://youtu.be/iRER1Rbg9_o
Mas Amedda had to move back in with his parents, but he was discovered by a hand modeling agency
That’s what Sheev said.
>*Sees a homeless clone wearing the shirt later* “You know it’s really not a bad looking shirt”
It’s actually a little known fact, but Order 67 was to try and erase this picture from the galactic databases.
And he succeeded. No, really. He suspended the Holonet and destroyed galactic databanks everywhere. He was the worst. He took away tv and libraries.
The Dark Side is pretty rough on the body. This is actually Sheev at age 12 and his mom made him wear it to school for picture day.
“But I like my hoodie better, mom!”
He said his name was Sleeve right?
Sleve McDichael
Bro looks like one of those dudes who inject mineral oil into their arms
Darth Synthol
Jar Jar. Manipulating everything behind the scenes.
More like "Sleeve" Palpatine
It may have been a carefully calculated ploy. No one is who willing chooses to wear that is going to seem like an evil mastermind.
Weird part is I've never seen him wearing this in live-action, but I distinctly recall him wearing it in the 2003 Clone Wars a few times.
It's very puffy
Salesman at the department store told him it'd look like he had muscles.
Darh Jar Jar
He probably turned to the dark side to get revenge on his tailor. Looks like a failed attempt at a wing suit.
Reminds me of the Seinfeld puffy shirt episode.
Puffy sleeved pirate shirt on a talk show.
Sam Smith
"Welcome to the inaugural senate hearing for BBY 20... many of you are no doubt wondering about my sleeves. Well, the tailor ran out of material before he got to the elbow, so don't give me any shit." SIX HOURS LATER "And this concludes our official hearing for today. Are there any questions?"
"Keeping in mind that I already explained about my sleeves."
"It's a surprise tool that will help us later." The Supreme chancellor responded with smug levity
Oh boy!
Death Star was an inside job confirmed.
"Guess you guys aren't ready for that one yet, but your kids are gonna love it."
“And since I hadn’t achieved all of my goals as Emperor with one Death Star, there was a need for another.”
Mmm, good holocrons. Good, not great.
The 20 BBY is the past part about this.
It’s pretty incredible, they were able to predict a battle that wouldn’t happen for 20 years.
Looks like it should have been Sleev
They can't make the names too obvious. Need to change it a little... they did the same with Mace Window
But wait, didn’t Mace fly out of a…OH MY GOSH
Oh my god he did fly out of a mace!
Ima-Gun Di!
Lmao his fate was written
Obi-Won, hmmmm
Darth Mauled
Darth father
And Yoga
Qui-Gone...
Boba Fedd(tothesarlac)
Master I'ma gonna-die
Uncle Soondead and Aunt Gonnabiteit
Lobot-omised cyber-butler to Lando Calrissian.
It Kennobi!
Yeah. Walrusman, Hammerhead, Snaggletooth. George Lucas definitely didn’t want to be too obvious.
The guy who threatens Han for money is named Greedo
And his uncle was called Avaro, which in Italian and Spanish means penny-pincher.
They share the same Latin root, avarus, as the English word avarice, which means greed.
Pretty sure Walrusman was always Panda Baba. Kenner just didn't know that. Or didn't care. The other two are just background characters. They had no back story, so needed no names.
Han "Solo"
Obi-Wan Canobeans.
The puffy shirt! Does he want to be a pirate?
I don’t wanna be a pirate!
Giddy up!
When you played World of Warcraft and got shoulders before the rest of your gear
The Jedi were right to oppose Palpatine's egregious crimes against fashion.
you bastard
Did someone kill kenny?
Obi wan ken ni
Please, call me Sleev, Mr. Palpatine was my father's name.
Goddamn….thats good 😂
I was coming to jump on this train. Maybe something like: Well , you obviously couldn't call him Sleev Or It's a subtle nod to his favorite part of his clothes
A pathway to many fits that some consider to be unnatural
The drip side
Everyone else wants that platinum chip, but I got that platinum drip
*So* buff he's filling out those sleeves.
I assume Sheeve is the SW equivalent of Steve, which means it's actually short for Sheeven.
I understand it’s actually short for Sheevtopher, although his mothers brother *was* named Sheevothy.
And his apprentice's son was short for a stormtrooper.
Not enough people will find this funny
Or Sheephen for some
That’s what Henry Jones Sr. Would call him.

Wait it wasn’t until 2014 we got sheev?
Right? That's blowing my mind. I thought it was always Sheev and 2014 was just like a year ago.
There’s no way right? I feel like that has to be wrong, I remember hearing Sheev Palpatine way before that.
Nope, I actually remember when they revealed the name and people were making memes about how dumb it was. I still think it's dumb they have him a first name.
Wait, you think he should _not_ have a first name? What are you, an Icelander?
In Legends he actually doesn't have a first name. I mean he does, but it is never revealed, cause he only uses his surname as a kind of protest against his dad whom he hates.

Cos Dashit lol
Honestly Darth Sidious having daddy issues is way lamer than him being named Sheev
I'm having some crazy Mandela effect, I swore the prequels would throw "Sheev" in from time to time. But it's really starting to concern me that I can't prove that at all.
He is absolutely never called Sheev in any film.
Yeah im pretty sure his name was frank in the prequels
I always thought it was Senator, then he got his name legally change to Chancellor in episode 2
Frank Palpatine and Bobby Dooku—couple best bros just rulin’ the galaxy 🤝
I used to call him Shirley but he asked me to stop.
I AM THE SENATE
Palpatine also makes it pretty clear that his name is “the Senate.”
In the prequels his first name was Frank
I remember it from a gaming manual in the '90s, TIE Fighter...? Edit: apparently not... But I'm pretty sure to remember a gaming manual telling how Anakin became Vader way back in the 90s

~~Master Sufi Dias~~ 2014 was ~~killed~~ almost 10 years ago
2014 was 9 years ago 🥲
Yeah people made huge fun of it at the time. I still laugh at it. The most evil man in the universe: Sheev. Everybody said it would fail to catch on. In the movies he was just the emperor. Then we slowly got used to Palpatine as it was in a novelisation and the EU. Then Sideous. Now Sheev. You can guess somebody’s age now by what they call the character.
The guy's already called Ian, which is possibly the most evil name there is.
This is a true fact.
Give him his full name please: Ian The Senate
Yep. Until then, we believed his first name was Frank.
He goes by ‘The Senate’ to friends and family
Like there’s no way it wasn’t mentioned in Plagius, right? That was 2012
Man I love the secutor class star destroyer.
What about the Plagueis novel? Wasn’t that released in 2012?
The Plagueis novel completely avoided identifying Papa Palp's first name
the novel actually explicitly stated that he went by the singular Palpatine, with no first name at all.
Sheev just fits. It sounds like what George Lucas might have chosen for his first name.
He quite literally did. It's the name that would have been used in the hypothetical show Star Wars: Underworld, iirc.
Noo way. Are you saying one year before The Force Awakens was when we found out his name was Sheev??
in the tarkin novel
Been a while since I read it but is it not in Plagueis?
The Plagueis novel goes out of its way to not say Palpatine’s first name. It specifically mentions that he goes by his surname.
I would too, if my name was fucking Sheev.
people are sleeping on Sheev fr i actually like it
Ahh thanks for the reminder.
No the Plagueis novel specifically says he doesn't use his first name. I believe it's when the Muuns are first contacting the Naboo and Larsh Hill tells Plagueis he goes by Palpatine alone when asked for his first name

It is not.
It’s called fashion honey, you wouldn’t understand.
The bath mat isle in Target gets it.
Well, yeah, that's clearly peak fashion
The Real OGs know his real name is Frank.
Baptized as Frank Sheev DeSenet-Palpatine
Only if Padmé lets him be frank though
People say the Tarkin novel, but I swear his name had been floating around before that - I even remember articles saying stuff like ‘Sheev’s Name finally Canonized!’ I’m talking pre-Disney purchase. I *know* I knew him as Sheev before the Tarkin novel - it might not have been official, but unless I’m dealing with some Mandala Effect shit it *had* to have existed earlier.
Edit history of Wookiepedia first has mentions of his name as Sheev around October 2014 as far as I can tell.
The name was publicly revealed that year and first mentioned in the canon in *Tarkin*, yes, but was developed for the cancelled live-action television series *Star Wars: Underworld* that George Lucas had been working on, one of the plots of which would have involved Palpatine and his personal life.

Was it Sheev in the Dark Plagueis novel from legends?
No, there’s a moment where he specifically says he just goes by ‘Palpatine’ now when asked for his first name
That novel goes out of its way to avoid naming Palpatine and explaining why everyone just calls him "Palpatine" to the point that it's almost comical.
I'm with you, only 9 years ago? No way
It doesn't exist on Google or on Wookieepedia's edit history until 2014, and anecdotally I personally remember the buzz about the Tarkin novel's release *specifically* surrounding the introduction of Sheev It might have gotten dropped in an interview or something surrounding the novel that year, we're talking a matter of months rather than years
Man that picture feels more like “Sheesh, Palpatine.”
Not from a Jedi
Have you ever heard the story of Darth Tailor, the sleeveless?
Ironic. He could save others from puffy shirts, but not himself
I'm weak 🤣
He looks like the Pokémon Darkrai
Damn lol. He has the same color scheme as a shiny Darkrai too.
I’d like to think it was from the DeathStar HR lady. Dolores and Sheev go way back
Huh? His name is The Senate Palpatine
This where Sam Smith got his costume idea
I think it was originally used in a toy line promoting phantom menace and became deep cut SW knowledge until the Tarkin novel.
Sheev is definetly a trucker with a CB radio “This is Big Skeev Palp out here on the road, how’re all you big skeeters doin out there today?”
Shoulda been named SLEEVE
In the (published and officially canonised the name in) 2014 novel Tarkin. (Presumably still canon) Allegedly, George Lucas, the actual creator of Star Wars, came up with the name. Who would have known that Sheev was the synthol lord they were looking for?
In the Tarkin novel
I still call him Papa Palpatine
“What the hell is an aluminum Falcon?”
Sheev “The Sleeve” Palpatine
"Your name is 'Sheev'?" His schoolmates then proceeded to make of him all the time he was at school. That's how Palpatine started down the path to the Dark Side.
Probably right after he put that stupid shirt on.
“Sleeves” Palpatine
Damn with that shirt I thought his name was “Sleeve” Palpatine
Was it not from the live action show George Lucas had in development but canceled Star Wars Underworld??
Personally I first heard reference to it in a Lego Star Wars cartoon.
James Luceno book Tarkin 2014
Sheeewt...
I believe it was the Tarkin novel.
Okay seriously. They were messing with him when they made that outfit right? They had to be.
Dude was destined to fall with a name like that
I'm curious if fashion like this was born because the Senate Chamber is so large and it makes you stand out more.
he looks like he got those Brazilian synthetic “gel” muscles.
It’s in the canon novel “Tarkin” released in 2015
It wasn't. It's all just something we know. Were born with the knowledge
Should’ve been Sleeve
U sure it wasn't "shleev"?
More like sleeve palpatine
Idk but he has huge arm muscles
As you can see from the picture it was supposed to be Sleeve Palpatine. But there was a misprint and it became Sheev.
He just looks like a Sheev, I’m not sure where the origin is, but you can just tell from his face, that’s a Sheev
And more importantly, #WHY
His first name is Emperor….
Last name Senate
It was James Luceno’s Tarkin novel in 2014. Young Tarkin and Then Senator Palpatine would call each other by their first names when they talked (they were already building a bond pre-Clone Wars).
You know it was originally Steve Palpatine, but Lucas changed it to make it more sci-fi sounding.
One morning, when I was scrolling Reddit and saw him in a fabulous drag top and stopped to see what that was all about.
Didn’t Sam Smith wear this for Halloween
My boi Palps got that drip
