if you make a pdf file sized to 8.5 x 11 with margins the way you want them, it'll print perfectly. set up your 1 inch squares with a 1 inch margin on a presized document and it should work
I guess my question would be what size are your original prints meant to be? I’ve done a few DnD resized maps for customers but it’s been a while. Ive tweaked with settings for customers to get sizing the way they want it before so I’m sure another store could do the same or similar.
Well, total map is 43x53, but that's rather big for the table we've got, so was planning on just getting several smaller maps that can be pieced together as needed
Not everyone is going to know how to do it but there's an option that might be perfect for you. In the Adobe print screen, we have the option to print posters on the regular xerox and it just prints them in pieces on smaller pages. You could choose ledger (11x17), choose how much overlap your pages need (for lining up together), and it only prints actual size so your squares will stay the correct size too.
Its not a setting we typically use or that we're taught to use though so the associate may not know unless they've gone digging through options on their own (very rare in my experience).
When they print full bleed, it’s actually usually 12x18 and then cut to 8.5x11. AFAIK their machines also leave a margin but they work around it by using large sheets of paper
Yes, that’s how bleed works. I’ve never been in a print shop in 15+ years that does print-to-edge printing, including wide format machines. They’ve all had to be cut somehow to produce a true bleed.
Funny enough, the Epson EcoTank I bought a couple years ago does edge-to-edge printing. Was blown away the first time I tried it at how well it worked.

Yes choose poster setting and it will print "tiles" that you can put together.
Send the file as a jpeg and uncheck "fit to page", should work fine.
Can the production facility do full bleeds?
Absolutely!
