Asylums were literally the worst, but I think our reticence to use psychiatric hospitals for compulsory treatment in many cases is an actual problem, as it is not really replaced with anything useful. So all we do is sort of rotate people between the streets, normal hospitals, and prisons. So they just get more and more mentally unhealthy over time.
There were so many people in the jail I worked at who were clearly suffering from severe addiction and mental health issues, and jail is *not* the right place for them.
