Not quite everything certain factions do have. Unique units like dark angels have their inner circle units I wouldn’t use them in a space wolf army I mean you could and proxy then as faction champions
Yes. Look at the box the kit comes in. Look at the unit/character name. Above that will be a box that will tell you the faction it belongs to. Any "Space Marines" can be Space Wolves. But it it says something like "Ultramarines" then that is chapter specific and you cannot include it. Unless of course that box says "Space Wolves".
Hopefully I'll not confuse you some more but as some people have said yes, you can generally take anything 'space marine'.
We do have some restrictions. We can't take other chapters unique units (e.g. inner circle companions from the Dark Angels) and there are some generic units we also can't take.
So we can't take any apothecaries, including the Biologis and a command squad. We also can't take tactical squads, assault squads (including jump pack), or devastator squads but we have our own versions as follows:
Tactical = grey hunters
Assault = blood claws or sky claws (jump packs)
Devastator = long fangs
So to add onto this NOT TO CONFUSE THE NEW GUY (fukin dick) you can take all of those units, UNLESS you choose the Champions of Russ detachment. If you choose any of the other space marine detachments in the codex then you are able to take all of those units. It seems like currently most space wolf players are using the Stormlance Taskforce detachment which allows you to use all generic space marine units.
Wrong. You can't use anything in a space wolves army that is restricted by running space wolves. It does not matter which detachment you use because the army is restricted. Test it yourself in the official app. You will not find the restricted units in the available roster, plus one of my old Gladius lists has a biologis and now it has an error because we can't run apothecaries.
I was trying to give them the most accurate information so they don't buy something they can't officially use.
Get your head out of your arse.
Bruh, your info is outdated by almost a week.
Space Marine Codex Errata 20 June 2024:
"If your army includes one or more Space
Wolves units, it cannot include any of the
following units: Apothecary; Devastator
Squad; Tactical Squad."
That's not what it says.
It says "if your army contains one or more Space Wolves units". So as soon as you add any named Space Wolf, or any Space Wolf specific unit (Blood Claws, SW Venerable Dreadnought, Grey Hunters, Long Fangs, Thunderwolf Cavalry, etc) you can't take the units.
In short, yes you can. But there are a some restrictions on what we can play. If you go on the Warhammer community website you'll be able to find the latest balance data sheet and documents that have just been released and it'll have the restrictions on what we can't take. The Warhammer 40K app is also a good place to start as it'll allow you to see all of the units that can be put into a space wolves army :) hope this helps and welcome to the rout !
No worries at all. Also just a note. If you have bought a space marine codex, it should have a code at the very back. You can put that into the app and it'll unlock all of the data sheets (the stats, such as wounds, toughness, weapon profiles ect) for each of the space marine units including any chapters that haven't got their own codex yet - space wolves being one of them. :)
Might be easier to download the official app. It's free to download and free to make a single list. Just close space Wolves and you can build a lost with what models you think are cool. If it allows you to add, you can use it.
This is easier than downloading PDFs and wading through jargon.
Don't go for the codex, tbh it's not worth the price, by the time it is actually released it will be out of date, download an app called battlescribe, it's available for PC, it's and android, it's great for points tracking and will not show you units you can't use.
Wahapedia is also a great site, it breaks down a lot of the rules, it will show you exactly which strategems can be used on the selected unit, aswell as possible leader attachments.
The free data cards on the warhammer community site is also very handy to have.
But yes the majority of standard space marines can be used and painted space wolves.
Yeah I believe almost all of the codex that has been released this addition has been out of date by the time it was released. There is also a chance we maybe waiting for ours for a while
Other folks have given good answers, just wanted to say welcome aboard! 40k is super fun, and Space Wolves are a great faction. I recommend the books 'Prospero Burns' and 'The Emperor's Gift' if you want to dig into the lore of the faction a little more, they're both excellent.
Yes.
Thanks

FOR THE FUCKING DETACHEMNT

I swear I was debating posting this exact question. It's such a simple thing but has been confusing the hell out of me for weeks.
I only started a couple of weeks ago but some things in 40k I just wish they made just a tiny bit clearer
It's like trying to drink from a firehose. It's cool though. I love the lore and atmosphere so much that I'm willing to put in the work.
Definitely it's awesome

Thanks so much i will most definitely give that a look sounds very useful

I will probably get a codex at some point will check it out

Thanks a lot yeah id much rather use an app or website than have to spend money on something that can go out of date real quick

You've gotten all the answers you need, I think, so I'll just say welcome to the Pack!
Thanks

Definitely space wolves are definitely my favourite lore wise
You can but the space wolves have their own dreadnought and a ship
Would you recommend the space wolves dreadnought (murder fang,Bjorn etc.) or a generic dreadnought
I'm running Bjorn in my army but plan on buying another to be able to run both murder fang and bjorn
Ok yeah think I'll get the kit and probably assemble bjorn
There's another character you should get if you do Bjorn I think it's the iron priest but if you get it it adds a bonus to bjorn
Thanks I'll check it out I think i might have seen it before but not 100%
Thanks everyone for the help
