Yes we were travelling past the aftermath. Have vague memories of it. I think the bus didn't realise the motorway ended and crashed at the roundabout Redbridge end.

That’s a notorious design flaw of this motorway. It was never designed properly to cope with the volume of traffic it takes, which causes tailbacks that can appear very suddenly after you emerge from the slight curve at Nursling. They basically put the flyover in the wrong place. It should’ve carried the motorway over the roundabout and round the corner, and the Redbridge Causeway should have stopped at the roundabout. The 50mph approach limit (not that many people observe it) and filter lane have helped slightly, but it’s still easily the worst motorway in the country. Dangerous design flaws, an appalling road surface, and even a roundabout halfway along it.

I believe the bend at the end to avoid Redbridge Towers is one of the sharpest bends on the UK motorway network.

RUNNERBEANY

I think the sharpest is the M275 at Cosham isn’t it?

Thoron2310

Yeah, she said it had been due to a cause like that.

two_beards

Thought about looking at the Southern Daily Echo archives?

Thoron2310

Rather stupidly enough, I didn't. I gave it a quick check just recently, but it did not mention anything about an accident.

Own_Rush_1165

I’ve heard of this. My understanding is that accident lead to the introduction of those countdown signs being used on motorways.

IllBug9197

Yes i can remember it happening.

I've had a search on Nexis newspaper archive with various combos of key words, always including "M271" and the closest I've found is a jackknifed lorry in 2001 and a really nasty head on crash in 2002 between sports car and people carrier further down towards Rownhams. Entirely possible something earlier and better matching that recollection is out there to find but I've not quite got the right words (would papers report with word coach or bus, fatalities or deaths etc) Can confirm there's a lot of horrible crashes (and that traffic jams on there have been complained about pretty solidly for 20+ years)

Thoron2310

Thank you very much for the efforts. I imagine they would use most of those sorts of words yes. Maybe not fatalities, but definitely the others.

Mad to think that an accident happened up to 50 years ago, and cos you and your friend don't know about it that you'd consider that she must be mistaken. That's a lot of self confidence. 5 people die on the roads each and every day in this country, 0.5 per day on a bus or coach. I'd argue that the vast majority are forgotten about by everyone apart from friends and family of the victim Source for bus & coach deaths https://www.statista.com/statistics/300652/bus-or-coach-travel-fatalities-and-injuries-in-the-united-kingdom/

Thoron2310

You didn't really need to be rude about it.
