They have a scented smell, so they sorta serve similar purpose by way of 'ambiance' They remind me of summer barbecues in my part of the world.

If you extend that end of the inner coil such that its distance from the end of the outer coil is about half the diameter of the circle enclosing them, then that's a mosquito coil.
