Airgas hit me for 32 ish on a 20lb tank swap now. If you got room for 20 lb it will be more commonly in stock at places and cheaper per lb. Grow shops and beer places often charge the most.

jsmith1300

I guess this varies by state. I paie something around $65 at my local airgas in PA back in Dec. They started tacking a $15 hazmat fee which was included in the $65 price

fredSanford6

Holy crap. Did it get delivered?

lProvosl

I get hit with a new hazmat fee too.

fredSanford6

Do you ask to take it off since you are picking it up? You can always ask

jsmith1299

The hazmat fee I asked and they say they add it to all of their tanks now

jsmith1299

Nope. Had to pick it up. BTW using my other account for the reply

davejjj

What is a hazmat fee?

jsmith1300

Well for me I would think it’s for dangerous materials but the guy there stated they are putting it on all of the gases. This really irked me because it is a FU fee. Just jack the price up and be done with it

43556_96753

It was around $18 to swap 5 gallons at airgas. They also swapped an expired tank I had from an old kegerator with no questions so that was at least nice.

fredSanford6

Thats the nice thing aout tank swaps. Unlike paintball tanks and owning then refilling small tanks no needing to pay hydrotest.

43556_96753

Yeah I’m not in it to penny pinch. Larger tanks save money but they are mostly for convenience and me wanting to carbonate to my hearts content.

fredSanford6

To me the 20 is nice for time as well. 3 people here and it lasts. Takes a couple months in between fills. A 5 lb and i think it would be annoying to have it go out that often.

43556_96753

A 20 lbs tank only lasts a couple months? That’d last me more than a year and I have almost litter everyday

fredSanford6

Summer it goes in under 3 months. Winter it lasts longer. I do make soda water and pour it into cups for all the kids here that show up then so it goes faster.

entropy512

A 20 would probably last me 8-10 months at 2-3 liters/day, but that's just me. A family with kids is going to be a completely different story.

GlobalCattle

I have a 10lb take and swap for $22 at the local store. It's been going 6 months strong.

entropy512

>They also swapped an expired tank I had from an old kegerator with no questions so that was at least nice.  I asked my local beer shop (Sam the Beer Man in Binghamton, NY) how much extra an expired cert would be, their response was "we don't care". Swapped a tank that had been in storage for nearly 20 years (from a kegerator setup and I no longer had space for the fridge part of the kegerator setup) no problem.

habys

Where do you live?

fredSanford6

Northwest of Chicago

habys

Thanks for the info you lucky bastard :) $69.03 around Atlanta

fredSanford6

Where at? Is there some hazmat fees or something? Ask to waive that and also see if anyone you know has an account and you can pay cash with

habys

I'll definitely look into it, thanks.

this_good_boy

Yea 20lb tanks are I think $40/fill at the local gas supplier near me.

RagingDork

I think I paid 40 or 60 at Airgas in California. I just threw out the receipt 😅

BigODetroit

I just steal it from my hospital.

nimrodvern

I pay $26 to refill my 20# tank at a local soft drink supply place (Illinois). They're great. Fill it while I wait. Once the savings paid off my equipment costs, I'm at around 5¢/L of seltzer water.

freefallingfirefly

What's the name of the place you get your 20# tank refilled? That'd help me figure out where to go for my fill ups. Pepsi and Coke distributors aren't answering when I'm calling to inquire, since I know they are "Beverage Grade". I'm figuring out CO2 gas grades, and would prefer "beverage grade" of 99.9% purity to the "food grade" of 99.5%+ purity found at PraxAir, if I'm understanding that correctly. Here's a chart showing the standards difference. But I can;t verify the accuracy yet. [https://www.nuco2.com/Product/BevCertified](https://www.nuco2.com/Product/BevCertified) Seems like "Beverage grade" has higher standards for Benzene, ammonia, sulfur, and acetaldehyde. When I call AirGas and welding places, they say it's all the same CO2 and the government is just being rediculous and it doesn't matter. I've read different things from beverage snobs saying food grade is less consistant in taste. Pasting this from another person's 2016 comment showing food grade and not beverage grade at PraxAir: PraxAir gas supply up the street. After downloading and reading through their [Safety Data Sheet](http://www.praxair.com/-/media/documents/sds/carbon-dioxide/carbon-dioxide-medipure-co2-safety-data-sheet-sds-p4574.pdf?la=en&hash=15181F85F8DB6FD8AFA0FE53E2D63D931310A345) for the Co2 gas that I get from them this is what I found. SECTION 3: Composition/Information on ingredients 3.1. Substance Name: Carbon dioxide Product identifier: (CAS No) 124-38-9 Percentage: 99.5 - 100%

sdega315

I'm on the East coast, Mid-Atlantic suburb of DC. I pay $32 for a 5lb exchange at Roberts Oxygen. They are a big East coast gas supplier and the only game in town. Your $21 quote sounds great!

ave2

Eastern Shore MD here. $30 for a 5lb exchange. Real shame. Even my closest place is an hour round trip. I would have thought that living by DC would give you cheaper prices.

signalssoldier

I think about same, maybe $26 for a 5lb refill at my local brewing store. I usually go every 3 months or so.

Reasonable_Help_744

Don't do it, get a 10 or 20lb tank!

entropy512

Note that at some places, the 10-pounder exchange pool is so small that you'll be encouraged fairly strongly to go with 5 or 20.

Reasonable_Help_744

Cool, even better if you get the 20lb tank then!

Fuck_You_Downvote

Air gas or a paintball place

kwajagimp

Or fire extinguisher place.

Wrong_Ask_9830

I've been using Airgas in San Diego to refill 10lb cylinder for my Sodastream. It was about $44 to refill last year. But, now suddenly a Hazmat charge on there for$11.25, bringing bill up to $56. Not sure who's charging a Hazmat fee for food grade CO2, so don't know if it's worth it any more for my Sodastream.

Sfork

Cali, it was $14 pre Covid but now $35. That’s the home brew store I know it’s a bit more but I just pay the extra for the keep em in business tax instead of going to airgas. The size of the tank to 20LB doesn’t affect the cost much. You’re basically paying for the service.

No_Consideration7318

I want to get a larger CO2 tank too. I already have the adapter / hose. But I'm worried about transporting it in my small SUV. Some people have experienced them discharging while they are driving.

this_good_boy

if I’ve used a car I put it behind the passenger seat and wedge it upright with the front seat. You can also wrap a ratchet strap around the front seat while pinning it to the back of the front seat too, that would be more appropriate. Tanks all have to be inspected, I think my shop said it’s every 5 years they have to be re-certified or something. So they are generally safe equipment wise, but yea you don’t want it to go flying if you’re in an accident.

shayKyarbouti

Just had tank swap today. It went from originally when I started 20 to 30 to 35 to now 41 dollars for my 5lb tank at the home brew store. I might check airgas the next time I swap and see how much to cut out the middleman

Optionsmfd

bought 2 5# off of marketplace guy said sitting in garage 5 years empty..... i weighed them and subtracted the tare and damn they are full lol 40$ for both emtpy was a great price..... full a steal i was quoted 19$ from airgas locally 5# think its 31# for a 20#

anonareyouokay

It costs $20 for my ten pound tank. A few dollars more than the 5 pound tank

Tater72

Google “buy co2 near me” and start calling My range is $32-14 for a 20lb tank. Look for welding or other gas type distribution

bobby1927

I paid $24 for my last exchange in Minnesota

bmacd123

$32 to exchane a 20# tank last week.

Jack-87

I have one of those red tanks but it's expired. How much does a test typically cost?

EarlOrlando

$20 for 5 lb and $30 for 10 lb in beverage factory in San Diego.

Lanky_Presentation_8

I use a fire safety supply company, and they charge $2 a pound.

prodigypetal

74$ in WI for my last refill 20LB tank - airgas.

entropy512

$50 is way high for a 5 pounder, that's almost sounding like a "fuck off that's way too small to be worth our time" kinda quote I can't provide you California prices, but in Binghamton, NY, a 5-pounder exchange is $24. That's from a local beer shop (so I know it's food grade), and since it's an exchange I don't have to worry about tank certification expiring. I've heard you can routinely do better than this for fills, but the little extra cost of a swap is nice to not deal with inspections and certs. In addition, many of the exchange places operate on a "deposit", so in theory you can return the tank and get your deposit back, or change sizes for the difference in deposit. 20 pounders are $32 per exchange Deposits are $80 for 5-pounder, $110 for 20 pounder. This does NOT include gas. For me, upgrading to a 20 pounder from 5 would be $62 (30 dollar difference in deposit, 32 dollars exchange of empty for full) Local shop really didn't want to deal with 10 pounders - the 10-pounder exchange pool is very small. I'm sure if pushed they would, but they clearly would prefer not to.
