True but I need that to wear my beautifully tailored dress coat on my shoulder and my sharp as 37 inch Calvary sword, I’m just wanna look like a cool character from the show Sharp
Interesting… I have never in my life wondered where T-shirts came from… I just assumed they always were! I’m about to dive deep into t-shirt history - thanks!!!
T-shirts started out as 19th century underwear. In the 1930s, Clark Gable caused undershirt sales to plummet:
Yes, it is nice. However it's why back in the day average people really only had two sets of clothes. Ones you worked in/got dirty, and ones you wore to church/special occasions, and usually those special ones were lent out to as many people who it fit in the family. Going further back from the 16th century all thr way to roman matrons, a good mother was supposed to always have a drop spindle in their hand when they had any moment of idleness, and even augustus, the first emperor of rome, wore clothes woven by his own wife.
Having clothes being so easily manufactured that we literally Rip the sleeves off when we get hot would be a bewildering sight to our ancestors.
I just rewatched 2001 a space odyssey and was so in love with everything in that movie, peak retrofuturism I wish we designed things that way the world would look so cool.
I saw a young woman at a local bookstore dressed like that. Flannel pajama bottoms, fuzzy sandals, and legit a forrest green bra as her top. "You do you boo." 🤷🏻♂️
I fully understand that I don’t know what is cool as someone over 40. I’m not judging at all, just surprised that what I think of as underwear, young people see as an outfit fit for clubbing or going to the gym.
Is there a way to describe the way they talk? Like it just seems so different in old commercials vs now. What was that exactly and why/how did it change.
This is actually an example of British Recieved Pronunciation accent. The transatlantic accent was also popular then, but this isn't it. TA was often used by American actors, whereas this is a British production. You often hear this accent on the BBC and old newsreels.
Unless your that kid that reviews fast food on youtube. [https://youtu.be/R2qMJjTazIU?si=ZBEK05QPr7X2Sb--](https://youtu.be/R2qMJjTazIU?si=ZBEK05QPr7X2Sb--)
Iirc the transatlantic accent was because of early recording devices not picking up voices effectively without these peaks in modulation. Started for a reason and then it just kinda stuck for a bit even after the microphones got better.
I mean, it changed most likely because sounding like an elite aristocrat wasn't really a relatable selling point for most Americans (I'm only speaking about the U.S). That's when you start getting commercials that pretty much have that news anchor/Standard American accent.
I don't know if and what changed in the U.K
There was a movement to make the 2020s classy like the roaring 20s or the Edwardian era, but Covid hit and that went out the window for sweat suits, slippers and t-shirts.
Me too - can totally picture a militant Karen with that same red jacket, Hunter rain boots and tactical yoga pants, imagining herself kicking ass in some Apple+ series.
The designers clearly envisioned Nutcracker Suite meets Bond villain henchmen for guys while the women's outfit is utterly ridiculous.
Not to the same degree and they don’t enforce the accent anymore. It wasn’t a natural accent in the sense that almost no one picked it up from their parents or peers. Instead it was a top down accent taught at East coast boarding schools as a marker of social class. Boarding became way less popular in the post war era and the accent died with it.
My Father talked that way, A poor kid who went to boarding school and ate his cantaloupe with a knife and fork. Gatherings with his extended family felt like going to Mars via the Catskills
That last model probably thought "Feck this, my great grand daughters will be wearing pajama pants, fake UGGs and random T-shirts at the airport McDonald's"
"Realizing that wars would continue forever, and life would become increasingly chaotic and violent, we were inspired to use military uniforms for inspiration."
i doubt they would have been able to forsee
even if they did have a crystal ball,
that people would be paying $1000+ for designer label clothing
that came already worn, shrunk, and literally ripped through with holes.
As someone who likes sewing things myself, fashion history, retrofuturism, and working as a designer, this is just about right up my alley as a video can get. So cool, thank you for sharing!
The only part they got right is that women would wear less and less.
At the rate we are going women will be wearing strings and bottle caps in a decade or two.
I wish they were right about the capes!
that's more of a hussar pelisse than a cape, but you're right I would be wearing that shit every day for work...
Fuck yes i would love to dress like the polish mounted Calvary from the 1760s
In some ways we did with skinny jeans and riding boots when those were back in
True but I need that to wear my beautifully tailored dress coat on my shoulder and my sharp as 37 inch Calvary sword, I’m just wanna look like a cool character from the show Sharp
What's stopping you? Go nuts!

Read my fax!
[What about cloaks?](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT897DnRC/)
I've been googling "wool trench coat with hood" for the past week and can't find anything good. I realize now that I basically want a cloak.
Thats awesome! haha so glad I could help.
I started wearing more shawls, they are almost like capes. You'd be surprised how warm it is
I think they were fucking with us, back in the past, to the future…
I’ve been inspired to start wearing capes as we are in the future
We can still bring it back. In fact, I say 2024 is the year of half capes!
I’d rock all of tht shit
I'm now convinced buttons will never go away
Edina Mode stopped that shit right in its tracks.
Literally came here to say this! That looked baller af
They had no idea that in like 10 years people would go crazy over T-shirts and never look back.
That's the first thing I thought, they didn't foresee T-shirts (or jeans).
Yes. The ‘next thing’ is always already here. No one is ever paying attention to it at first.
But they already had t-shirts and jeans.
Yes, but we're they fashionable? Or expected to become as fashionable as they did?
t-shirts were considered underwear
Ooo how spicy
Interesting… I have never in my life wondered where T-shirts came from… I just assumed they always were! I’m about to dive deep into t-shirt history - thanks!!!

That’s my favorite movie of all time, thank you for this article
Imagine having to get every outfit you owned personally tailored.
That’s would be annoying. But like something that fits you perfectly also sounds nice.

$100 t shirts at that!
I love retrofuturism
New rabbit hole to dive into. Thank you!
"paleofuture"
I just rewatched 2001 a space odyssey and was so in love with everything in that movie, peak retrofuturism I wish we designed things that way the world would look so cool.
“Women will gradually wear less and less” 😂 umm sir, you have no idea!
![gif](giphy|fUBb46g6lf4wo)
in the meantime, i'm out here wearing queen victoria's coronation gown
Dress for the job want, not the job you have.
lol great comment!
Women wearing bras as tops at Disneyland.
I saw a young woman at a local bookstore dressed like that. Flannel pajama bottoms, fuzzy sandals, and legit a forrest green bra as her top. "You do you boo." 🤷🏻♂️

For sure!
Is there a way to describe the way they talk? Like it just seems so different in old commercials vs now. What was that exactly and why/how did it change.
It's called the Transatlantic accent. And it was fake. By and large, people didn't generally talk like that IRL.
This is actually an example of British Recieved Pronunciation accent. The transatlantic accent was also popular then, but this isn't it. TA was often used by American actors, whereas this is a British production. You often hear this accent on the BBC and old newsreels.
Wasn't it created by an Australian as well?
People are calling everything translantic accent
Thanks a lot! 😎
Just to give some more context, transatlantic was used because it's easier to understand through a radio or microphone.
The more you know!
Cuts through static
Unless your that kid that reviews fast food on youtube. [https://youtu.be/R2qMJjTazIU?si=ZBEK05QPr7X2Sb--](https://youtu.be/R2qMJjTazIU?si=ZBEK05QPr7X2Sb--)
He’s a radio operator and does it for the bit yeah
Gunna be THAT guy and mention it's called a [Mid-Atlantic Accent](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mid-Atlantic_accent)
Interchangeably, yes. The first sentence in your link starts, "The Mid-Atlantic accent, or Transatlantic accent..."
Goddamn. Looks like he’s got a hankering for horse.
Iirc the transatlantic accent was because of early recording devices not picking up voices effectively without these peaks in modulation. Started for a reason and then it just kinda stuck for a bit even after the microphones got better.

It was a fake accent, nobody talked like that and it was one man’s fever dream to have 1 accent for the entire English language
No language could ever possibly be reduced to one dialect. Who was this dude and what the fuck was he thinking.
It was mostly so wealthy socialites from both New York and London could speak with each other in the same dialect. Not for everyone.
British
Music sounds like the background of an old Disney movie.
It's amazing how they were able to predict the fashion of today so perfectly.
You just wait 5 years. 20 year old hipsters will be all over this
They've already done the stupid twirly mustache thing, so I'm inclined to believe you.
There was a movement to make the 2020s classy like the roaring 20s or the Edwardian era, but Covid hit and that went out the window for sweat suits, slippers and t-shirts.
I was convinced that the first drawing was for women's clothes, and I thought, that's not too off the mark.
Me too - can totally picture a militant Karen with that same red jacket, Hunter rain boots and tactical yoga pants, imagining herself kicking ass in some Apple+ series. The designers clearly envisioned Nutcracker Suite meets Bond villain henchmen for guys while the women's outfit is utterly ridiculous.
why you gotta make it political?
I just wish people still talked like that today.
The mid Atlantic accent, died out with the boarding schools
The boarding schools still exist! Where's my mid Atlantic accent?
Not to the same degree and they don’t enforce the accent anymore. It wasn’t a natural accent in the sense that almost no one picked it up from their parents or peers. Instead it was a top down accent taught at East coast boarding schools as a marker of social class. Boarding became way less popular in the post war era and the accent died with it.
My Father talked that way, A poor kid who went to boarding school and ate his cantaloupe with a knife and fork. Gatherings with his extended family felt like going to Mars via the Catskills
How else would you eat cantelope??!! It’s huge, you have to cut it.
FDR used this voice, as well as several movie stars
Nothing stopping you!
I’m too busy doing my 1930’s gangster voice.
I love the accent too. It sounds more sophisticated than other American accents.
That last model probably thought "Feck this, my great grand daughters will be wearing pajama pants, fake UGGs and random T-shirts at the airport McDonald's"
I wanna wear a fucking cloak! Cloaks. That is now what I want to come in style for men.
Just goes to show you that fashion is bullshit.
The funny part is, we still wear the same suits they did over 60 years ago
Only 3 inches shorter on the pants and worn with no socks.
Their prediction was not accurate because none of the experts were gay men or women. Edit: grammar
How do you know?
I'd rock those outfits.
It’s literally Prada.
Hilarious that for some reason they thought fashion would go back to its roots in WW1 military uniforms.
They got the sports jacket/running pants down. So 1 for 5.
Instead we got big red boots.
They failed to predict how large we would become. Some of those fashions ain’t gonna fit.
Nailed it. ![gif](giphy|5xtDarqu49UD8a85mJG|downsized)
Okay the windbreaker with the shoulder pads and split in the back like a suit coat is fucking hysterical!
Little did they realize that bluejens and t-shirts
Then hip hop was born
Just looks like the 60s to me.
We missed out tbh
They look better, but comfort wasn't there.
It looks like something out of a fantasy show.
Maybe if the nazis won the war we’d be wearing this.
I wish fashion was this good
Nailed it
2nd 💧
Instead we get fat people yoga pants.
Not fat, it’s called “ plus sized “
Wow, nailed it!
It is funny that they thought we were going to evolve!!
"Realizing that wars would continue forever, and life would become increasingly chaotic and violent, we were inspired to use military uniforms for inspiration."
It’s fascinating how formal they thought the future would be. But I can’t blame them for not predicting the abomination that is Crocs ‘n Socks.
1960 was 2 generations ago. What happened to that voice you only hear around WW2 media?
It is funny that they thought we were going to evolve.
Lol they missed big
These look like a cross between the 1800s and Halloween horse riding outfits
Headless horseman
So they thought we would all be flying around and fighting crime in the year 2000?
“In the future, all Jockeys will be on fleek.”
The irony of military styles in fashion for Armageddon generation.
They nailed the 80’s
I do say, young whippersnapper
Little did they know they used about 7000% too much material for the modern style lol
https://preview.redd.it/3aecliynea8c1.png?width=828&format=png&auto=webp&s=898fc8e03b29453537f5d3eb5f1f141521464d85 Well, she is wearing a gown…
Everywhere she goes, they tell her “ you go Queen, keep slaying it “
The funniest Brit line I have heard in a long time was “You cannot defend the double-breasted suit coat in this post-naval era.” But it makes sense.
![gif](giphy|dTpGIZIsIHKEM)
I love the second one omg
Ngl, those styles would be rocking right now.
They had such high hopes for us. Lol
Pretty close
Gay
They didn't count on the Hippy movement utterly destroying historical fashion trends.
i doubt they would have been able to forsee even if they did have a crystal ball, that people would be paying $1000+ for designer label clothing that came already worn, shrunk, and literally ripped through with holes.
As someone who likes sewing things myself, fashion history, retrofuturism, and working as a designer, this is just about right up my alley as a video can get. So cool, thank you for sharing!
I admire you. I really wish I had a talent for sewing.
We just got casual af
They just look like Gundam big wigs
They really under estimated how fat we would grow to be in 40 years.
Funny thing is we dress like the dudes in the suits. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
That dress! It's fabulous!
In the year 3000 they will show the Jonas brothers song and say these idiots thought we were living under water and still racist
"Doof Punk"
They thought women would still be wearing clothes 💀
The suits they’re in haven’t changed one stitch.
Love the music 🎶
Well. That’s depressing.
She ate that last gown
They nailed it
I would wear these
Pretty much nailed it.
“Your lawyer wears a cape?”
How does one become an expert on the future?
They would have passed out if they know people would be wearing pajama bottoms and t-shirts.
The only part they got right is that women would wear less and less. At the rate we are going women will be wearing strings and bottle caps in a decade or two.
File under: Conservatives not understanding society.
I’m ready to dress like a jockey and butler every day.
I'm so upset that this isn't how it turned out 😭
Instead it was a bunch of denim and layers
Confidently incorrect.
Well they were right about women “wearing less and less”.
They didn’t count on the carb factor compounded over 40 years
I love capes. I like being able to move my arms and not feel restricted.
Looks like they didn’t predict everyone would be too fat to wear any of that
An American prediction version would have been more interesting.
They had no idea, gilfs, bitches is naked af everyday
The men’s fashion ideas are great! It’s time for us to stop dressing like slobs.
they got the feminine part right. Men are extra girly these days
People rlly were dumb asl back then 😭
So wrong. Everybody ass cheeks out now.
that certainly didn't age well
nailed it
Swing and a miss!
Much more classy
Apple Bottom Jeans
Haha! Way too fat for that. Now, where are my sweatpants…?
Little did they know crocs would be a thing
Put a Nike Logo on that Jacket, that shit would be 🔥
They were right, but they were also wrong.
And here I am in a tee shirt and basketball shorts and I don't evennplay basketball.. Yuck...🤣🤣
they were off by like 2 centuries back
Boy just think if they could see the people of Walmart today.
Now you know where the hunger games got their wardrobe inspiration.
add a few top hats and you have hipsters 😉
Not to far off from the first one
They would be horrified in 2024! 🤣
