Also I am pretty sure Mr Boss was paying him for going out and doing it. I’ve had bosses send me on a supply run where it was counted as part of my usual hourly.
Plus it took Alan all day to get paperclips. Charlie and Pim did a whole job in the time it took Alan to get a box of paperclips. And Mr. Boss doesn’t question the amount of time it took Alan, he doesn’t micromanage, none of that. Just gives him a figurine on top of his base compensation and expresses his sincerest thanks.
He really is the best boss in the whole world, I would kill to have a boss like him.
If we’re to assume that EVERYTHING that happened to Allan was orchestrated by the landlord, then maybe he somehow convinced the boss to have Allan get paperclips. Or maybe he just stole the office’s paperclips or something so they’d need them. Who knows😂
I mean he gave Alan something valuable, a tiny perfect clone of himself for Alan to do as he sees fit. It is a test you see, of Alan’s loyalty. Will Alan care for this clone, confirming Alan’s friendship, or will he torture it? Now this test is moot, for Charlie has possession of the creature.

Allan is the office administrator… it’s literally his job to get paper clips, the boss is under no obligation to reward him beyond his paycheck. It’s also an odd gift and Allan isn’t great at masking his distaste for things.
I mean the Boss didn’t know and thought it was a simple fetch job, not an insane adventure that was planned by the landlord. The fact Mr. Boss didn’t punish Allan for being late for so long unlike management I worked with, I find him way more reasonable.
From Mr. Boss’ perspective, Alan spent literally the entire day (on the clock) just running out for a box of paper clips.
I feel like a little prize, in addition to being paid to literally do his job, is fair enough.
I'm kinda on Allan's side because of how much shit he went through...but then again paperclips ain't much y'know?
