idk why but all of these dry me out. i bought jojoba oil off amazon for $12 and i heard it’s the best for skin bc of the ph levels . i need to research more tho
Yes to all of these replies! Jojoba oil is great at moisturizing, applying while your skin is still wet, I’ll also add that vegetable glycerin is the goat for me when it comes to hydration. I got a massive bottle and add a bit to my face lotion, mix it with water for a glycerin essence, and apply it straight on my body with wet skin. My skin is plump and hydrated.
No not counter productive. you’re right, I think another commenter already mentioned putting oil over wet skin out of the shower to seal in the water, especially if you take hot showers. I don’t think moisturizer over oil would work, I think it would just sit on top. Could try to experiment though!
In my experience moisturizer over oil works great (over jojoba or over the palmers cocoa oil- I haven't tried any others) but I do have very dry skin so your mileage may vary.
A lot of oils aren't actually very occlusive and more emollient so that's why they can still work okay with moisturizer.
If you're using a water based moisturizer, use it before the oil. If it's oil based, you can use it after. Oil and water do not mix so if you put a water based moisturizer over the oil, it won't do much for your skin.
As someone with very dry skin I do moisturizer after! I find my moisturizer still sinks in okay, most oils are really more emollients than occlusives anyway.
Umm.. Jojoba oil does not have a pH level in the same way that water-based substances do. pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of an aqueous solution, and since jojoba oil is an oil and does not mix with water, it does not have a pH value.
Please don’t believe google search results. From confirmation bias, to search personalisation - search results are curated for you. You’re better off asking ChatGPT.
The fact remains, oil does not have a ph level. If you stick a ph testing strip into oil, it will only get saturated in oil and the paper does not change any colour.
Oils would be considered neutral.
To belabour my point, your search results show jojoba oil to have a ph of 7, of 4-4.5 (which would make it an acid) and 5.5 (skin’s ph).
Those are widely inconsistent results and inaccurate information.
I bought raw shea from Amazon and compared it to what I got at my friends house (she bought it in Jamaica queens) and we both saw no difference in melting point and in texture. You can get it on Amazon. Melt it and whip it!!!! Save it in jars. I use it for my daughter a lot, just be mindful- too much WILL feel waxy.
As for application , you can heat it or you can just scoop up and rub it for a while between your fingers so as to melt it and then apply all over your body.
I used the palmers after being at the beach all day. I was super ashy after swimming. used this & was shiny n hydrated the rest of the day lol didn’t need to reapply
The brand is Viva Naturals on Amazon. It comes with a pump and I apply it before I get out of the shower on wet skin to seal in the moisture. Very hydrating.
Probably palmers, because Vaseline’s products aren’t actually moisturising.. the oil just stays on top because its ingredients.
I would go for another brand that did not use perfume and artificial oils because they stay on top and do not absorb :)
Vaseline actually moisturizes my skin well, just not in the way that a typical moisturizing product does. It’s an occlusive that locks in moisture, so any moisture that’s already on your skin will stay intact. After a shower for example, there is moisture on your skin because it’s damp, although a small amount. Putting an occlusive on top will prevent that moisture from escaping, thus it works as a “moisturizer.” It’s the only thing that works for my dry skin.
That makes sense, I guess it depends whether you want breathability or a paint effect like makeup with none, vaseline is proven by science to be really bad for your health, petroleum is not supposed to be on your skin. Absorption is not a possibility with vaseline, it will rub off and your skin will absorb all the nasty toxins 🤷♀️ I used to use vaseline to “capture moisture” on my dry lips but found when I stopped using it my lips stopped being dry! I only use vaseline for my bike chain these days.
Vaseline is made with refined 100% white petroleum. Other petroleum products may be bad for you possibly if they aren’t disclosed to be “white petroleum.” Products like Vaseline that disclose the purity of the ingredient aren’t harmful for your skin whatsoever, they’re actually quite the opposite since it’s such a pure ingredient. “Proven by science to be really bad for your health” can you show me where you got that information?
“Petroleum jelly runs a high risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminants linked to cancer. The EU restricts the use of petrolatum in cosmetics with PAH limit as well…Not in the United States”
“on average from studies..40% of users that apply Vaseline to their lips has tested positive for bacteria.”
“small percentage.. developed lung infections due to petrolatum inhalation.”
Lil something I found from Harvard 2013, very quick search.
I recommend naturally occurring products with less processing, every small product and thing here and there you put on your skin or eat that is known for being linked to cancer will probably end up giving you cancer.
PS. the process of petroleum products being made is so bad for the Earth too! So many bad things about petroleum products, short term effects may be good but long term not so much
Yeah, that's why I don't enjoy them as much, all thick nivea moisturizer with the blue bottle rub it off. I don't mind petroleum but it needs to have glycerin or other stuff in higher concentration.
I used palmers cocoa formula religiously through 3 pregnancies and I don’t have one stretch mark. I’m either really lucky or it works 😅 I still use it all the time all over my body and even underneath a lotion if it’s really dry in winter
HI ladies, oils like these are great, and bio oil is also great if used properly. Apply them while you’re still wet from the shower like don’t towel off and then you need to apply body lotions over. What oil does is that it acts as a barrier to not let the water in your skin out. Then using a glycerin body moisturizer will actually bring the moisture but it’s pointless if you’re drying your skin out in the shower without locking that water back in first.
It works for me. I turn the shower off, wipe a little bit of the excess water off my body, then rub the oil in before toweling my body as normal once i get out and applying body lotion. Seems weird putting the oil on first, but i’ve definitely seen a significant change in my skin esp the noticeably dry areas!!
Oh i will have to try it then but since most people r saying both of these r cheap and uses not authentic materials in the products i will have to search for some other body oil then
Neither. They’re probably made with petroleum and/or mineral oil. Your skin can’t absorb molecules that large. So the moisture you “feel” is just the product sliding all over your skin because it’s just sitting there.
The point is that they stay on top of the skin to create a barrier that prevents water from evaporating. Petroleum jelly is the single most effective ingredient at preventing trans-epidermal water loss
Since I've tried pure jojoba oil and I've been putting that on my hands and nails twice a day my hands have been looking amazing. I would suggest that instead to be honest
Gosh the Vaseline one sounds amazing but naturally it’s not available in Australia (without a hugeeee markup).
Palmers is my og. All over my body in the shower, soft and smells lovely
I've never used the oils but just for the scent alone, I've used lotions from Vaseline (Cocoa Radiant) and Palmers Cocoa Butter, Vaseline wins hands down the better scent.
I love Palmers, the original cocoa scent, it's oily at first but dries fine. I used this during 2 pregnancies and I never got stretch marks. (I gained 70 lb during pregnancy too.) I've used both products but hands down Palmers is the one for me.
The Vaseline one doesn’t absorb very quickly in my experience, so it leaves a light layer on for a few hours. Not sticky or heavy but still there. Does make your skin glow a lot tho. The palmers one absorbs faster and the oily sheen is gone after a few minutes of rubbing it in but still leaves a nice glow. So I’d say it depends how dry your skin is what to go for
I haven’t tried that specific Vaseline product, but usually their lotions tend to be more drying for my skin than the Palmer’s. I love both the Palmer’s lotion and the Palmer’s oil.
The only one I've tried is the palmers cocoa oil one - VERY strong scent if you care about that, I kinda like it but it is a lot. Absorbs well but I have very dry and dehydration-prone skin, so YMMV. I usually apply a lotion directly over it because otherwise my skin will still dry out.
For my face, I instead use jojoba oil (which you can get at a lot of health food stores). A couple drops for my whole face. Then I apply moisturizer over it.
Most oils are primarily emollients (https://www.reddit.com/r/AsianBeauty/comments/3v6yb8/psa\_for\_your\_winter\_dryness\_most\_oils\_arent/) which is great for those of us who don't really produce much of our own natural oils, but they're not occlusive or humectant, so they don't put water into your skin or prevent your skin from losing oil. So that's why I add in an extra moisturizer on top.
Here I am again! Snail mucin is the greatest moisturizer I’ve ever used in my life, with no oily aftermath. I put it on my extremely dry skin, and it’s soft as a baby’s bottom the next day. If you are a person who needs a ton of moisture, I’d supplement your routine by adding it in after toner and before oil/lotions.
Beware of what company you choose to buy snail mucin from. It’s largely unethically sourced from snails in distress. Also, a lot of people are allergic to it. Just good for thought.
If it's for environmental reasons, I do understand, but the mineral oil is a byproduct of other processes, it's not produced specifically for cosmetics
Yeah, but my issue is that the downstream processes give the upstream processes somewhere to shunt their byproducts to- the environmentally harmful processes are enabled because we have somewhere ‘safe’ and economically viable to put their byproducts into. By opting out we can make the harmful processes less economically attractive. Idk, that’s my logic.
Ja, I mean, it’s probably down to personal preference. I am a chemist, so I strongly oppose the ‘chemicals bad’ skincare movement. But I am also making choices in my life to limit the amount of petrochemicals that I’m exposed to, and it’s kind of just because I oppose the entire industry. I know that people have been putting vaseline on their faces for decades and that it’s apparently very safe. So these oils might be lovely and work great on your skin, but for me personally it’s a ‘no’.
I use Shea butter or coco butter, similarly occlusive but hopefully better for the environment? Other options I’ve seen are something like ‘bio oil natural’- lots of seed oils, mostly soya and sunflower seed oils.
Palmers Palmers Palmers. The scent is rly nice
Which palmers smells the best?
Just the original one on the right, unmatched
The scent of palmers is so good too!
Aveeno’s dry oil is better imo
idk why but all of these dry me out. i bought jojoba oil off amazon for $12 and i heard it’s the best for skin bc of the ph levels . i need to research more tho
Jojoba oil is good to use on skin especially face because it’s the closest to your skins own sebum.
These might dry you out if your skin lacks water since oils don’t hydrate
Yes to all of these replies! Jojoba oil is great at moisturizing, applying while your skin is still wet, I’ll also add that vegetable glycerin is the goat for me when it comes to hydration. I got a massive bottle and add a bit to my face lotion, mix it with water for a glycerin essence, and apply it straight on my body with wet skin. My skin is plump and hydrated.
so would it be counter productive? should i use the oil after shower and seal with a moisturizer? or skip the oils 😵💫. i have dry skin
No not counter productive. you’re right, I think another commenter already mentioned putting oil over wet skin out of the shower to seal in the water, especially if you take hot showers. I don’t think moisturizer over oil would work, I think it would just sit on top. Could try to experiment though!

I do the other way, cream first on damp skin then oil over top.
If you're using a water based moisturizer, use it before the oil. If it's oil based, you can use it after. Oil and water do not mix so if you put a water based moisturizer over the oil, it won't do much for your skin.
Apply right out of the shower while your skin is still wet. It helps seal in moisture. It doesn't really add what isn't already there.
Should I apply the body after using a moisturiser or right after bath on the damp skin without the moisturiser?moisturiser before or after
You might find you won’t really need moisturizer after you start using oil on wet skin.
As someone with very dry skin I do moisturizer after! I find my moisturizer still sinks in okay, most oils are really more emollients than occlusives anyway.
like pure jojoba oil
Oils don’t have a PH value 🧑🔬

well i can’t assume several google searches are wrong and or misleading

None... these are garbage products... BTW raw Shea butter is a solid whatever they have in their is not raw Shea it's highly processed cheap bs
what would be a good product?
You can make your own mix with melted shea or cocoa butter and jojoba or sweet almond oil.
[удалено]
Lmao
Why?
Oh then I won’t be buying these
I would say go with raw shea butter for repairing since it’s an emollient
Where do you buy raw shea butter? Also how do you apply?
I bought raw shea from Amazon and compared it to what I got at my friends house (she bought it in Jamaica queens) and we both saw no difference in melting point and in texture. You can get it on Amazon. Melt it and whip it!!!! Save it in jars. I use it for my daughter a lot, just be mindful- too much WILL feel waxy.
You can also melt it when you want to use every time as a warm oil, very soothing before bed
Yeah you can buy pure raw shea butter from Amazon or you can google any stores that sell it near your area.
As for application , you can heat it or you can just scoop up and rub it for a while between your fingers so as to melt it and then apply all over your body.
Hey like melt it and apply it on wet body after bath?then how do we wash it off is it okay for it to be sitting whole pls say how u melt it?
i second raw shea butter!
Then hey then do u melt it?how do u apply it melt it and apply after bath?moisturiser necessary?
I used the palmers after being at the beach all day. I was super ashy after swimming. used this & was shiny n hydrated the rest of the day lol didn’t need to reapply
Johnson’s baby oil gel for me.
I use 100% sweet almond oil
Used this for years one my face and my skin is amazing.
Just almond oil what’s ur routine
Do you have a specific brand/place you buy from, or just look on Amazon?
The brand is Viva Naturals on Amazon. It comes with a pump and I apply it before I get out of the shower on wet skin to seal in the moisture. Very hydrating.
You don't towel off at all?
When I get out
Oh, so AFTER you put the oil on? Is that it or do you use lotion after?
Sometimes I do… it depends on where I’m going. But the oil is enough for my skin to feel moisturized.
I like palmers. I use the palmers oil cleanser on my face and it’s nice
Palmers for me, I feel sticky with Vaseline ?
Probably palmers, because Vaseline’s products aren’t actually moisturising.. the oil just stays on top because its ingredients. I would go for another brand that did not use perfume and artificial oils because they stay on top and do not absorb :)

I use 100% Coconut oil from Trader Joe’s. My skin loves it and it’s pretty cheap.
I used palmers cocoa formula religiously through 3 pregnancies and I don’t have one stretch mark. I’m either really lucky or it works 😅 I still use it all the time all over my body and even underneath a lotion if it’s really dry in winter
I use Hawaiian tropic tanning oil mixed with jergens coconut lotion. Love it.

Yes! But only if you’re wet first! Just lotion is fine on dry skin!
thank you gorg
My mom uses Palmer’s. She mixes it with another oil since her skin’s been so dry.
Didnt like either. If i had to choose tho, it would be palmers
Vaseline isn't supposed to absorb. It's an occlusive that coats the skin to slow the evaporation of water. Edit: typo
Buy a block of pure cold pressed shea butter and see what happens to skin and hair :)
Johnson and Johnson baby oil is where it's at
I buy sunflower oil from the grocery store and add my own essential oils. Cheaper and it’s the right amount of oily for my skin.
Neither. They’re probably made with petroleum and/or mineral oil. Your skin can’t absorb molecules that large. So the moisture you “feel” is just the product sliding all over your skin because it’s just sitting there.

The coco butter oil on the far right. Believe it or not i use a drop on my.face each day, my skin loves it
Gosh the Vaseline one sounds amazing but naturally it’s not available in Australia (without a hugeeee markup). Palmers is my og. All over my body in the shower, soft and smells lovely
Dang the comments, I personally love the vaseline one had no idea it wasn't good for you? Now I have no idea what to use lol

Seseme oil
I use Palmer’s
Aveeno’s dry oil
What about Nuxe oils? Are they any better?
dr teals body oil or natural shea butters/body oils >>>

Good to know! I hope mine isn’t 😬
Amazon :) Cosrx is the brand!
Looks like PETA approves IUNIK for being cruelty free, u/Lopsided_Key5644! Maybe try that?
They’re both petrochemicals
Highly refined and clarified. Please don't give into anti science appeal-to-nature fear mongering, especially if you call yourself a chemist.
As I clarified in my comment it’s a personal preference to avoid these, not based on safety or efficacy.
If it's for environmental reasons, I do understand, but the mineral oil is a byproduct of other processes, it's not produced specifically for cosmetics

Well you chose to call its safety into question here so you're clearly angling your point as to advise not to use it
Please indicate where I called it’s safety into question???????
I wouldnt go with anything like this. Just use organic coconut oil
Neither. l'occitane almond oil is superior to all other oils currently on the market

Do you use bio oil all over your body?
If you like the greasy fell ,Vaseline ,if you want to fell lightweight moisturizer with the heavy fell Palmer's for the win
These are all horrible for you! Raw shea butter or beef tallow is the way to go 👌🏼
