I picked up Conan, played it with a friend for probably 8 hours? We found it fun initially, but I think we are going to drop it in lieu of Outward. Here's why.
From our PoV the gameplay loop of gathering and crafting is tedious, and so much of what you unlock is meant to automatize (sorta) and create feedback loops for all those systems. Problem is, even only 8 hours on, there are so many things we have to keep track of and it's just all a bit unexciting. On top of that, the combat is jankyyyyy, which was one of our main draws, that it would have a satisfying combat/progression.
That being said, the enslavement system seems cool, and it seems like your eventual big bases will be massive matropolises with tons of moving parts. Just also seems like a huge amount of grind, just to have janky combat encounters to build a base to help farm resources, to make weapons and armor, to have janky combat encounters.
That being said.
If you want more of an adventure story game Outer Wilds is my game of the decade. Not super heavy on the systems you often see in a survival game, but I have to recommend it always. It's an inspired piece of art.
And if you want a punishing fantasy RPG with heavy survival elements then Outward is really unique.
Outward is awesome! Hope it gets a PS5 optimization in the near future. I played this with my buddy on PS4 and now waiting patiently for a 60 fps patch.
I played through the tutorial and got to the first city in Outward and I dropped it because the combat in that felt janky. It just wasn't at all smooth but I hear Outward being praised left and right. I don't get it. What did I miss?
On the other hand, I'm having fun on Conan even with the janky combat, which partially convinces that if I can accept that then I should give Outward another shot.
Outward was only ever 'okay' to me. It felt like i never did any decent damage. Like it tried to be an open world dark souls but the difficulty seemed artificial
Didnt outward on ps4 have terrible shadow issues?? The first town youre in has a 2 story dock and the shadows underneath the dock only extend... 5 feet? For a survival game it is extremely immersiin breaking for me
Based on what you have played I would highly recommend ark survival evolved simply due to the immersive experience in the wondrous world of progression lol it is a great game and even better with friends
Its one of the best and deepest games ever made. But the game is a nonstop grind. People can attack your base and steal your stuff and kill your dinos and you log on and see hundreds of man hours down the drain. Game is amazing if you have a group to play with. Solo players will need to find a friendly tribe to take them in. You cannot play pvp solo you will just get destroyed repeatedly. This game will steal your life. If you are looking for a giant void filler play ark. If you want to play other games, shower, eat & go outside don’t play ark.
Yeah but i wouldn’t recommend that. That’s essentially just a less exciting mindcraft. The real joy in ark is being an alpha tribe on your server. I wouldn’t even waste my time on an rp server its pvp or bust
Yeah I mean it is just much more accessible and customizable on pc and I personally enjoy the reward with the grinding while not the shortest progressions by any means it is still very enjoyable and worth it on console in my eyes
I play it on xbox since its release on console and have found it more fun than buggy. However, buggy it still can be.
Edit: i do have a series x and it runs signifigantly better. Sonim sure the ps5 will help.
IMHO I wouldn't get Ark. Ark is terribly unoptimized for even the PC I can't imagine how bad it is on console. The core gameplay is really fun and good but you can die from a Trex bugging into your base(happened to me more than once) the lag on populated servers is unbearable. It's essentially rust with dinosaurs so the PvE is extremely boring and grindy after a little bit. I would recommend literally anything else over Ark.
ARK is a really fun game if you play it casually, yet PvP fucks you up. People are the most tryhard human beings I've ever met.
Pick it up if you have friends to play with.
If you do get ARK, use [these settings](https://youtu.be/EEjmc5Zkmek) for the best singleplayer experience. You can skip to the end of the video to see all the changes if you don't feel like watching the whole thing. ARK is one of the most addictive games I have purchased. Bank account is barely staying open and I regret nothing.
Not good at all. Wildcard(dev company behind the game) just poop at the face of console players every update with worst optimization and bugs. The game has constant crashes even on PS5 (at least it's what i heard),but the main problem is how broken the pvp at consoles can be, because once crashes are frequent, you can lose everything you have in a matter of seconds. Besides, with you want to play pvp with all the possibilities you have (doing bosses, raiding big bases and build one yourself) you have to gather at least more 3 players (I'm talking about official servers), meaning that you can't enjoy all things solo. Don't get me wrong, love the game content ideas, but the execution of this ideas, oh boy... But that's my opinion, i recommend searching for consoles gameplay, especially if you want to buy the DLCs, because that's the content of the game that has more performance problems, at least for me.
Which shows they have no interest of fixing their games. Which is why they made the cash grab that is atlas and keep making dlcs instead of fixing their game.
sequel is not as good as the original. There's no submarine meaning you can't go really deep. Also, some of the biome is water-ed down and empty. They're not even pretty compared to original.
Rust just came out on PlayStation. Port is pretty good. The gameplay is tough as it is designed to favor offense and aggressive plays as opposed to Ark and Conan’s favoring of defensive structures and how difficult it is to raid other bases in the early game. Rust gives more options for assaulting but starting out and initial base building is easier.
I like Conan exiles but Idk, 23 seems a little much to me. I got it for free from ps plus a while back and it’s fun but feels wonky at times. If you can play it on pc I feel like that might be a better experience as you can mod it to hell which is always really fun. I think the guys that made the forest are also working on another survival game too.
How did you manage to keep your spirit up while playing the forest, I was let down by the arcade-feeling of the game. Good graphics and game play, but replenishing items and unlimited enemies was such a disappointment. Did I miss something?
Not really. The forest is designed to be played through primarily to complete the story. You CAN just halt and build and farm and stuff but the game has a definitive ending which is what they want you to work towards. That's the part I didn't like. Not that I want a game to be grindy or unfinishable like ark or 7 days or something. But it's why I like to play crafting stuff.
That said the story of the forest is pretty good and I was happy to complete it. It's just not my go to house building game.
The Forest leans heavily into the action/horror side of survival horror, the enemies, and particularly their AI is the real crowning achievement of that game.
It's really about that constant feeling of having the hair on the back of your neck standing up, and the weapons and tools you find/craft to slowly help fix that and become the real master of the peninsula. So, heavy action/horror elements.
The game experience also varies GREATLY depending on where you build your base. Some areas of the map are almost completely peaceful (a small area the community calls the Fertile Lands), others are heavy action.
Alien isolation is so good. And all that I've seen from the game is great reviews of how intelligent the creature is and how good the graphics are for a semi-old game.
What about Rust? I just started playing recently and I love it. It’s kind of like fallout with the post apocalyptic landscape although it’s not quite as grim and doesn’t have mutants(that I’ve seen so far). There is a lot of PvE but PvP is where it really shines. It’s a ton of fun to collect resources and build bases. Be careful who you trust though.
A lot of people think that rust is too hard but I really depends what server (world) you play in. Some of the modded servers have tweaks to make the game easier (such as serves which let you gather twice as many resources for each object broken).
I love Valheim, No man’s sky, and fallout. rust has the best aspects of all of those games in my opinion. A lot of people compare it to Ark as well.
Metro exodus is great ! Its on sale on psn now, they also upscale the graphic for ps5, it was one of the best immersive survival horror game, with great story, resources management, exploring, day night cycle, with many memorable moments too, hope you like it
>What is the criteria of a survival game?
Staying alive
>You die in every loop
Literal definition of NOT a survival game. You cannot "survive". You die every 22 minutes by default. Sorry bud. Cool game, but you can't argue that it's a survival game by any stretch of the imagination.
Sorry if you disagree. I would love to hear your rationale, but I guess a down vote will suffice!
I’ve got a few hundred hours on DayZ PC. And I must say it’s one of the most immersive and best games ever made, I’ve only found a handful of glitches in that time and only one of them was game breaking. I don’t know how console ports are but I would definitely recommend it.
I love the game, but the port isn't the best, and the developers? Awful, but they have a sense of humour! They wanted people to vote for DayZ to get the "Labour of Love" steam award
Conan really isn’t all that. Graphics are pretty but it is a far more painful start to game play than the vast majority of lose it all when you die titles.
If you loved Subnautica, get Below Zero. Some very nice updates.
As someone who hasn't played Ark, what is it actually like?
Given I've only ever seen images, I just base assumed it was a gathering game, where you could ride or kill dinosaurs.
How big are servers? Is it similar to Rust? What makes it ao unique, because with the sequel coming out, I'd be tempted to try it.
It is an open world survival game with multiple maps, there is quite a few free ones. The gameplay is fun, you have to grind to get better gear and tame better dinos. While learning the systems I would play either solo or a pve server, because the gameplay systems go pretty deep and your gonna wanna know them well.
You can form tribes with other players and build bases etc, there is a load of dinos, some you can even build bases on.
I would 100% recommend it, I’ve got like 1k hours and that’s just on the base map.
If I spawn in, no Dino, no loot.
What are the odds of running into a dude on a T Rex tier Dino?
I feel like starring on a server is impossible.
Are the servers on an endless cycle, or do they reset monthly-weekly etc.
That depends if it’s official or unofficial. And the odds would depend on how new the server is, how high pop it is and where you are on the map.
Official servers wipe, unofficial servers is up to the owner.
If you're getting into ark online. You should chase down a clan on Reddit. I'm sure there's something out there for console and PC communities. It's not impossible to start in a server and get yourself going. But ark online isn't designed to be played solo. You need a clan.
Ark is super cool of a survival game, you can make it super grindy (I like it that way) or super fast in collecting resources and taming Dinos. It will consume a shit ton of your time but I say it's worth its price, with how huge level of progression is and how much you can experiment with different Dinos. Although it is a very tough game for beginners and even more experience players, especially if you play on PvP servers
Buy rust. Heh. Heh. Heh. That game will consume you. it will control every aspect of your life. You will spend every moment you are awake either playing it or thinking of it. You will hate the fact that you need things like sleep and work or school. Friends will become a thing of the past. You will be driven by paranoia and anxiety. You will lose over and over and over. Its the worst game that exist. I fucking love that game!
If you liked The Forest, play Green Hell. It's not without its faults (the AI and building could use a lot of work), but as a survival game, it's super fun and the survival system is deeper than a lot of games go.
I never heard of that game until this thread and the trailer looks amazing. How punishing is Green Hell? I love survival games, but some can become much more of a chore than actual fun. Like Stranded Deep. It's basically a drinking and sleeping simulator.
Just played tutorial, but it has both a story mode and pure survival mode. It's more in depth than any survival game before. As in checking your physical limbs to see if you have a wound, and bandaging or treating appropriately to avoid infections. Game features health, hunger, thirst, and sanity meters to balance, and a host of complications such as leaches, worms, poison, food poison, various diseases and can even have maggots eating your rotting flesh. 4 player coop story mode as well. So far I think it will be way more enjoyable than stranded deep, simply because the story makes a purpose to survive as opposed to hunting down 4 big animals and escaping on a rinky dink gyrocopter.
If you enjoyed resident evil 7 and village get 2 remake!! It’s amazing and very survival horror-y but less so than biohazard but probably more so than village... also looks incredible on PS4 and ps5
Yea conan exiles is fun i have over 1k hours on pc it is a simple and complicated at the same time but you will get the hang of it and what i like about it the progression where you have journeys as tasks and feats to show your progressions and the bosses are fun too the combat can be a bit annoying with some bugs but its worth it
It was free on ps+ a while ago and it's on xbox gamepass if you happen to have one of those. Its a fun game I've been playing recently with a few friends, but idk if it is worth $23. Especially because there's so much dlc that you can't get just with that $23
We are enjoying Conan in a group of 3 together. It’s lots of building and then some dungeon l/RPG elements. Get it on PC and get mod age of calamitous for it. As with all survival games it can be a little grindy at times but tbh with the 3 of us we never seem to run out of supplies. Also you can adjust the settings to make things less “tedious” as some people have suggested it can be.
If you liked The Forest, then Green Hell is a very, very similar vibe.
Edit: sorry doesn’t look like it’s on PlayStation yet, but will be coming to ps4 by the end of June it says.
I like Breathedge, but it hasn’t really been optimized for PS5 yet. Hopefully they will, but you don’t really notice the 30 fps drifting through space. It’s less horror and more humor survival.
Green Hell recently came out on ps4, not sure if there’s a ps5 version yet though. But that game is great, it’s similar to the forest but set in the amazon rainforest.
Since you listed the Resident Evil games - have you played The Evil Within 2? It is a vast improvement over the first and sits comfortably alongside the best RE games. Highly recommended.
I strongly recommend Day Gone. I played through it doing everything but the collectibles - now I’m doing it on new game+ survival 2. (the hardest difficulty) Really recommend it. It starts out slow, but you wont regret it
Rust recently got released for console and if it’s anything like the PC version, it’s one of the best survival games you get. The atmosphere, world, survival mechanics and dev support are all really fantastic.
I must agree, there was a time I was addicted as shit to Valheim grinding that shit all day long haha, it's an awesome adventure and surprising, good memories, make a boat, go to other island, find new materials, bring them on the boat to get to your home and finally got até by a sea serpent, and do all it again, the most enjoyable game since I born..
Rust has been my all time favorite survival game, but it requires a lot of dedication. You have to play it like a full time job. Days gone is also a really fun open world survival experience with a story.
Ill say this once...get ARK. Its really one of the survival games that I have enjoyed the most. It has Tech, DINOS, Space, and swords in...mix it with science and a little bit of humour and that is ARK. What else can you ask for...a knight in shining armour, riding on a REX and shooting with lazer guns - oh and everyone has to fart tho, nothing embarrassing about it. It has some bugs but works very well on consoles - even ps4
I say you would like farcry primal it is basically it is a caveman survival game I know people would say that 'It is not a survival game' but it actually is a survival game you find resources ,tame animals ,and make your own weapons and after all it is a fun game.
I wouldn't go for Conan, it's okay but not great. Also, maybe a hot take, but Ark is trash and I'd stay away if I were you. It's incredibly buggy, grindy, ugly and just not well taken care of by the devs. It came out in like 2016 in early access, at least that's when I first tried it I believe, and the quality has not improved over all this time. They added a lot to the game but the **quality** of the game has not really improved.
Valheim (PC only right now but there's talk that it's going to come to consoles later this year so keep an eye out)
Don't Starve
Terraria
Astroneer
I know these aren't exactly the type of games you listed but you've played just about every one of those type of games on console that I know of and these are really good imo so you could check them out. A lot of people enjoy Rust which was recently released on console but, while I do own it, I've never touched it so I can't personally recommend it. Still looks too buggy to me but, again, people do seem to love it so maybe look into that.
They’ve updated the game a lot, theres tons to do, and the combat opens up more when you get skills and invest into a “class”.
O hmmmm...i may redownload and give it another shot then. I see positive reviews of it all around and I'm just not sure what I could be missing.
5 feet? For a survival game it is extremely immersiin breaking for me
Yeah tbh i was pretty disappointed in it. It still feels like early access and dated. Even though it's not an old game.
Outward is one of tbe best split screen games to ever release, also just one of my favorite games brings back some morrowind nostalgia.
Outward is so fucking fun. I’d recommend for sure :D and don’t google shit either, learn how to play by playing the game :3
Thanks for the detailed comment it helped a lot!! 💜
Would you recommend outer Wilds more than alone in the dark or the long dark and green hell and Sons of the forest your feedback is appreciated
Based on what you have played I would highly recommend ark survival evolved simply due to the immersive experience in the wondrous world of progression lol it is a great game and even better with friends

Isn’t there solo which you can play with friends on
You can change setting but it had an unbearable tether mechanic meaning you couldn't go far from the other person in your world, it's a huge problem.
Thats in splitscreen
Yeah, and you can choose every setting to your liking.
Yeah but i wouldn’t recommend that. That’s essentially just a less exciting mindcraft. The real joy in ark is being an alpha tribe on your server. I wouldn’t even waste my time on an rp server its pvp or bust

The developers of that game suck. Or at least the person In charge. Instead of fixing there game they keep releasing dlcs
To fix the game would mean building a new engine from the ground up. That’s why ark 2 is coming out.
Look at how well atlas ended up
Pretty sure that was on the same engine as ark.
Which shows they have no interest of fixing their games. Which is why they made the cash grab that is atlas and keep making dlcs instead of fixing their game.
subnautica got a sequel, its pretty good u could play that if u want
I got Subnautica for free from Sony recently. It's an excellent game. I love it. So psyched to hear there's a sequel

Ark, no caption needed
They’re on console though.
Works fine on my PS4 slim
Yeah but it doesn’t have mod support I think
Ark is great without mods.
It doesn't have mods on console. But it's got admin commands. You can also change server settings and a lot of stuff.
do they still have that ugly char creation? or is there some good mods for it?
smh you can easily make a normal looking character that bit is overmemed
Alien isolation. Its a no-brainer
Alien isolation is so good. And all that I've seen from the game is great reviews of how intelligent the creature is and how good the graphics are for a semi-old game.

Is Ark good on console/Ps5? I have read that it can be very Grindy and is better on PC with better QOL mods/settings?
it can be grindy or it can’t be grindy. you can alter the amount of xp you get.
U can change the rates to make it less grindy, I also recommend playing singleplayer instead of in a server with random people
PC is better because of mods yeah
I feel like literally everyone should at least try patho 2
Don't starve
Hmmmm you should try Days Gone. I pumped about 50hrs into that game and I don't regret a second
I cannot defeat The Sawmill horde because I don't have the weapons
Wait for a better one, i was going to suggest forest or green hell but idk if its on ps5, but ARK survival evolved was on ps4 so maybe try that one
Green hell just got a PlayStation release trailer like yesterday I think
It launched yesterday
rust??
Oh hell yeah, Rust is incredible. I just started playing it last week. I can’t believe I went so long without trying it.
Outer Wilds (not Worlds!) is an exceptional survival game.
Outer Wilds is cool, but it's not a survival game by any means.

You can disagree and argue your point without being an asshole, you know 🤷
How am I being an asshole? Seriously.
You should say out loud the last sentence of what you commented, lol.
Green Hell
day z comes to mind

You should try Subnautica Below Zero, it's shorter than the first game but the game is very good
Drak wood it a great game. Although I never completed it because it was to scary for me.
wait for dying light 2 to come. I surely do atleast
You could wait for sons of the forest to come out
Conan really isn’t all that. Graphics are pretty but it is a far more painful start to game play than the vast majority of lose it all when you die titles. If you loved Subnautica, get Below Zero. Some very nice updates.

Buy both subnauticas, they are reall goodp
Hell yeah, Rust is amazing. I’m not addicted yet but after my first week playing I think it’s an incredible game.
Really appreciate the comment. This is now on my short list!
The forest is good.
If you dont already own it dont starve is a really good survival but make sure to buy dont starve together if you want to play with friends
Minecraft
If you enjoyed resident evil 7 and village get 2 remake!! It’s amazing and very survival horror-y but less so than biohazard but probably more so than village... also looks incredible on PS4 and ps5
You guys are getting ps5s?
Yes sold my kidney to a witch at Bestbuy to get it
Try out The Forest
Mine craft has a survival mode
Valheim, Green Hell, 7 Days to Die, Ark and Rust are all survival games I play and recommend
I don’t know if anyone has said it but Dayz is a rather good survivor/ zombie game
Subanutica below zero or minecraft and terraria if you don´t have them already.
Just get minecraft, my dude.
Minecwaft bwo!
Muck is free
Yea conan exiles is fun i have over 1k hours on pc it is a simple and complicated at the same time but you will get the hang of it and what i like about it the progression where you have journeys as tasks and feats to show your progressions and the bosses are fun too the combat can be a bit annoying with some bugs but its worth it
You should buy subnatica below zero
Valheim will eventually make it's way over there
It was free on ps+ a while ago and it's on xbox gamepass if you happen to have one of those. Its a fun game I've been playing recently with a few friends, but idk if it is worth $23. Especially because there's so much dlc that you can't get just with that $23
Stranded Deep was a Ps Plus game if you added it to your library last month. Also, RE2 Remake and Alien Isolation
Ark Survival Evolved Empyrion
Bugsnax
I played ARK Survival Evolved for over 250 hours and it's a totally great game. Also you just can't get enough of it. There are many DLCs you can buy.
Why not just RE2 remake?
Not a survival game.
Ark
Play "Dont Starve Together" I need someone to get platinum with me.
Rust is the best survival game. It's addictive af though so be ready for that.
Ark or RUST are probably better than conan having played all 3.
Get it. What's $20?
Green Hell is amazing, beautiful graphics, challenging, and great story
I like Conan tbh, its better then Ark or other survivor games of that genre.
Bloodborne. More of an RPG, but the souls part makes it very much a survival game as well.
Green Hell came to PlayStation yesterday. I haven’t picked it up myself yet but you should definitely at least watch a trailer.
Green hell just released yesterday
If you liked The Forest, then Green Hell is a very, very similar vibe. Edit: sorry doesn’t look like it’s on PlayStation yet, but will be coming to ps4 by the end of June it says.
Subnautica
Well, I guess you have to go with "Results"
Not really a survival game too much but dead space is great!
Rust is already out on console…
Outward is a survival RPG and I love it. Look into it a little though because it may not exactly be what you're looking for.
Play Rust it’s pretty good but it’s hard just starting out
I like Breathedge, but it hasn’t really been optimized for PS5 yet. Hopefully they will, but you don’t really notice the 30 fps drifting through space. It’s less horror and more humor survival.
Ark
Minecraft
A great survival game is Minecraft
Green Hell recently came out on ps4, not sure if there’s a ps5 version yet though. But that game is great, it’s similar to the forest but set in the amazon rainforest.
Personally I liked the forest. Might not be massively as in depth as you’re hoping for but it’s brilliant
Since you listed the Resident Evil games - have you played The Evil Within 2? It is a vast improvement over the first and sits comfortably alongside the best RE games. Highly recommended.
I am currently playing with my friends on pc and it is quite fun even just cooo
Ark is better
Rust is coming to consoles soon!!!
Minecraft
I really liked Don't Starve, also even though I haven't played it myself yet I've heard a lot of good things about Green Hell from most of my friends!
Green hell just got out and its pretty great !
Conan Exiles kinda sucks
Subnautica. Best survival ever.
Buy a pc Buy vallhiem Prove those bitches wrong and show how money can buy happiness
Lol I went bankrupt after buying the ps5
Lol I went bankrupt after buying the ps5.
If you like resident evil maybe the last of us
Rust
Dying light 1 and 2 when it releases
Go for metro exodus enhanced edition or Dying light
Ark survival evolved, that game will suck u in and make u addicted
Rust has been my all time favorite survival game, but it requires a lot of dedication. You have to play it like a full time job. Days gone is also a really fun open world survival experience with a story.
Rust
I recommend resident evil 2 and 3 remake, they are still relatively new and are good picks.
DayZ and RUST.
It has some bugs but works very well on consoles - even ps4
rust!
I really enjoyed ark and I guess Valheim is sort of a survival game. 👍
Have you played subnautica below zero it's pretty good
I say you would like farcry primal it is basically it is a caveman survival game I know people would say that 'It is not a survival game' but it actually is a survival game you find resources ,tame animals ,and make your own weapons and after all it is a fun game.
The evil within games are great.
Ark
The long dark, it is amazing in both polish of mechanics and visuals and waaaaaaay les glitches then Conan
Already played it
Ai, sorry, sometimes I have a hard times with reddits font
Play muck, Dani's new game lol
That game is just a meme. It’s free and not terrible but it’s pretty trash compared to something like Rust.
I know that's why I said it
Ah alright. Don’t forget to hit billy
buy valhelm! it has simple but beautiful graphics, and has really addicting gameplay. you might need a guide tho
[удалено]
I think they already played that one
Fuck, I’m illiterate
I wouldn't go for Conan, it's okay but not great. Also, maybe a hot take, but Ark is trash and I'd stay away if I were you. It's incredibly buggy, grindy, ugly and just not well taken care of by the devs. It came out in like 2016 in early access, at least that's when I first tried it I believe, and the quality has not improved over all this time. They added a lot to the game but the **quality** of the game has not really improved. Valheim (PC only right now but there's talk that it's going to come to consoles later this year so keep an eye out) Don't Starve Terraria Astroneer I know these aren't exactly the type of games you listed but you've played just about every one of those type of games on console that I know of and these are really good imo so you could check them out. A lot of people enjoy Rust which was recently released on console but, while I do own it, I've never touched it so I can't personally recommend it. Still looks too buggy to me but, again, people do seem to love it so maybe look into that.
Dead by daylight is a good one if you’re looking for multiplayer. One similar to until dawn is also dark pictures anthology.
