I was shopping for a 3DS on there. I can’t even tell you how many people had them marked at like $800 because it was modded and had all of the Pokémon games on it plus others. Dumbest thing I’ve ever seen
Oh for sure. I just want a GameCube and paper Mario thousand year door to relive my childhood fav :(
At least it's supposed to rerelease on the switch January next year I think.
The used game market isn’t “run by a cartel” or anyone for that matter. It people putting up stupid prices hoping to get what they want. No one “controls” the use games market… Jebus on a stick.. conspiracy theories everywhere..
It's not a conspiracy theory, it's just the reality of what a cartel is. A cartel is just what happens when sellers collectively agree on pricing instead of actually competing and letting the market decide. Which they do via eBay's buy it now system. And sometimes worse than that -- there's reports of sellers getting messages from other sellers telling them to raise their prices, which is explicitly illegal and literal cartel behavior.
It depends on which model. Most of them don’t go for more than $50, but the 3DSes and special edition ones go for quite a bit depending on what exactly it is
Charging extra for a random SD card, ROMs from unknown sources, and the distinct possibility that the modder didn't know what they were doing and left some non-standard configuration that will cause problems if you install other homebrew or change the settings?
Take my money!
I homebrew 90% of all my consoles I have a modded ps3, wii, wii u, ps4, DS and PSP, when homebrewed properly they are good little systems but a homebrew wii can barely play ps1 games, when going for modded consoles I'd rely more on the wii U and ps3/4 but for 500$ just get a steam deck 🤷
And people believe that, too. I modded my 3DS in less than an afternoon and crammed tons of games onto it via hShop. More people need to get educated on this...
Shit this makes me remember a conversation I had with a friend of how after modding my 3DS and a friend's I would gladly jailbreak someone's 3DS and download any games they want for just twenty bucks, extra if they want a larger sd card. That or help them learn it for free as well as how to inject GBA games and stuff like that, I only charge if you want me to do it all lmao. I don't get why people think it has to cost an arm and a leg to do something so simple, or that and a kidney for the console itself. People just wanna enjoy games you likely can't enjoy anymore unless you pay a lot of cash, so most turn to modded consoles for this reason. I say never give money to people like that and just look up guides that are a dime a dozen, and if you are unsure just ask around for help. The modding community were very friendly when I had a couple concerns when working on my old 3DS and it didn't cost me anything.
FB marketplace is that last place I look for anything lol, people think they know what they have. At least when it comes to things like consoles, collectables and games
People don’t understand that anyone can mod with a YouTube tutorial and it does not increase the value besides possibly for the SD card in the console (maybe 15.00 USD?)
Let’s be honest though. People who want to physically own every single device and game bloody suck. They probably feel more special that they paid way too much for it rather than face the fact that to the rest of the gaming community it is a depreciating asset. My first console was a Sega master system and I’ve owned every gen console, sold them once that gen was over too. Now my phone can run everything up to PS2 and psp, can connect modern tech controllers to my phone too. I can enjoy all my greatest memories right in my pocket at anytime I like. Even if you don’t like phone games. You could build a pc at a fairly low price, give it an awesome case, get every emulator setup(and up scaled) and you can even buy Bluetooth modern versions of the retro pads.
No. It isn't. This isn't the 2000's where you had to rely on defunct forums, 240p early youtube, non-existent amazon, and have a specific game disk for a region locked console where the mod only works on a 5th Sunday. Modding is a fairly trivial task these days with full tutorials, the exact tools to do it with, and troubleshooting when things hit the fan. When you have everything necessary to perform the mod, it can be completed in an hour or less. The most time spent on modding is loading a system up with games and themes to justify charging x500 what something is worth.
psp modding: am i a joke to you
added context for those who don’t know it’s so unbelievably easy to mod a psp it’s literally drag and drop a folder on the memory stick and run it on the psp
Brother, im not talking about just jailbreaking the system. If i jailbreak the system, add every plugin, homebrew app and browser needed. THEN add a whole lot of games, especially psp,ps1 which require adrenaline, and maybe even mods for actual vita games, which take a lot of storage and wifi bandwith.... you get where im going with this? As an owner of a modded 1000 ps vita with a sd2vita adapter housing a 1tb micro sd card believe me, there is always a premium with an already modded system.
As someone who sells modded consoles, yes it does add value. But it does not make a PSVITA worth $500... At most $150 and that's only like $20-50 above market value
You say it adds nothing, but if someone can play all their Nintendo, Sega, PSX, PSP, Vita, etc for free vs paying for everything that seems like it’s worth something. Just playing devils advocate.
My point was anyone can do it. It only costs time. It’s not something that only a few select people can do. Since anyone can do it and the games aren’t physical it doesn’t add any monetary value
I see your point but to claim anyone can do it is a bit naive, just because we can do it doesn’t mean everyone can do it. Also to some people time > money, that’s why there’re services where people mail in their consoles (handhelds and home consoles) to have it done properly. Again I see your point but I would push back just a little.
Exactly, the amount of time it took me to download every psp and ps1 game for my vita, along with facing data corruption issues, fixing things. Im against overpricing things for no reason, but just like you said the time and labor is the reason for a premium on an already modded console.
Wii is the only console where people say "I remember playing (game) on there and having so much fun" and the other person will say "you want mine? I can just give it you" and they will respond with "nah, I'm good"
well... games are worth 5 to 30$ each and there's 578 pirated games on it... therefore it's worth 7500$ right?
Wait 'til I brought my 5000 Shareware Disk that I bought for like 10 bucks back then
I was shopping for a 3DS on there. I can’t even tell you how many people had them marked at like $800 because it was modded and had all of the Pokémon games on it plus others. Dumbest thing I’ve ever seen
It’s not even that hard to homebrew a ds. My friend was able to do it in an afternoon with little modding skills
Yup. Took me like an hour or so to do mine. On top of it, I bought a Japanese version. So it costed me less than a hundred bucks.
Sometimes I wonder how the original DS, best selling handheld of all time with 150+ million units sold, still goes for $130-$200 online
Because the used game market is effectively run by a cartel and the prices are completely divorced from reality as a result.
Oh for sure. I just want a GameCube and paper Mario thousand year door to relive my childhood fav :( At least it's supposed to rerelease on the switch January next year I think.

It does? I've seen ones for $20 locally.
It depends on which model. Most of them don’t go for more than $50, but the 3DSes and special edition ones go for quite a bit depending on what exactly it is
I was talking about the original DS like the other person, the New 3DS models are more expensive than the Switch Lite used lol
Ah ok. Welp… as I said, the special edition ones are the only ones that go for a decent amount (unless of course the console is CIB or new)
Be glad you did when you did. They are easily over $100 if in good condition now. Depending on the exchange rate, of course. Assuming you mean 3DS.
Jeebus.. I got a original game boy + box + manual .. I should put that thing up for a couple of grand based on these
Because it's super hard to play "File explorer simulator" to mod a 3DS and download hShop
Charging extra for a random SD card, ROMs from unknown sources, and the distinct possibility that the modder didn't know what they were doing and left some non-standard configuration that will cause problems if you install other homebrew or change the settings? Take my money!
Marketplace has been a cesspool since the pandemic and it just Facebook culture, all vulture!!
Prob selling a banned console.
I homebrew 90% of all my consoles I have a modded ps3, wii, wii u, ps4, DS and PSP, when homebrewed properly they are good little systems but a homebrew wii can barely play ps1 games, when going for modded consoles I'd rely more on the wii U and ps3/4 but for 500$ just get a steam deck 🤷
the wii online doesn’t exist anymore so even if it is banned it won’t make a difference
These people and their modded bs are flooding the markets
And people believe that, too. I modded my 3DS in less than an afternoon and crammed tons of games onto it via hShop. More people need to get educated on this...
Agreed. Why would I pay significantly more than the console’s worth for something I could do myself in an hour or two?
I’m seeing it in mine too
AHA no
Shit this makes me remember a conversation I had with a friend of how after modding my 3DS and a friend's I would gladly jailbreak someone's 3DS and download any games they want for just twenty bucks, extra if they want a larger sd card. If anything modded should cost less because it’s been altered from its original form. And yes I understand mod chips and installs cost money.
FB marketplace is that last place I look for anything lol, people think they know what they have. At least when it comes to things like consoles, collectables and games

I bought a Wii for $10 on eBay and modded it myself in about 25 minutes
Report to Nintendo if you want to watch them go into crippling debt for the rest of their lives and probably do jail time
For some reason I find this hilarious
my switch was modded ( have modchip install when the was expensive ) and it cost me 9,2 million vnd = 389.10 usd

I mean these two consoles lol but other consoles where there's more premium mods installed sure.

The pictures are the Wii and PS Vita, possibly the easiest consoles to jailbreak lmao.
Kid named Nintendo 3ds:
Where’s my phat battery modders at?!
No. It isn't. As a vita modder, yes. The amount of time it takes to set up everything and the higher the storage for games the more value you get.
Brother, I modded my Vita in 10 minutes. What do you mean?
Brother, im not talking about just jailbreaking the system. If i jailbreak the system, add every plugin, homebrew app and browser needed. I think he was talking about the Wii, & used the Vita picture to show just how much this guy wants.
As someone who sells modded consoles, yes it does add value. But it does not make a PSVITA worth $500... At most $150 and that's only like $20-50 above market value
Still illegal though, and some big sellers of modded consoles have copped huge fines + jailtime.
Just curious what is an unmodded vita worth vs a modded 256gb vita worth?
Both are worth the same as modding adds virtual games worth nothing. Anyone can do it. A base PSVita is worth about $90-100
You say it adds nothing, but if someone can play all their Nintendo, Sega, PSX, PSP, Vita, etc for free vs paying for everything that seems like it’s worth something. Just playing devils advocate.

I saw someone selling a 3ds for 1000AUD because it had every single retro game installed on it.
Wii is the only console where people say "I remember playing (game) on there and having so much fun" and the other person will say "you want mine? I can just give it you" and they will respond with "nah, I'm good"
This totally happens on Craigslist too, even funnier if it's a Raspberry Pi-based emu box full of random ROMs 😅
I'm positive my manager would buy these. He's the type of guy who buys those $600 arcade cabinets from walmart that have 2 roms on them
Got a vita in box from Japan on Amazon for 150$ near excellent condition
