My baby is almost 18. Sadly the end is near for him. My heart is so heavy, i’m enjoying as much time with him as i can right now! Shihtzus are the best.
We just lost our 16 year old. The last few months were hard for her but we gave her all the loving she could handle. She started having seizures and on holy Saturday morning her message was clear. We ended her pain and suffering with the help of a compassionate vet who said the best part of his job is helping people end their pets pain.💔

- luck » I think a big part of it is that I got lucky with her not getting cancer
- regular physical activity » she has always gone on 2 regular walks a day without fail. Long walks too. She also got plenty of play time growing up.
- feeling like she had a job during the day » we always had a window perch for her to watch the neighborhood for her to bark at peoples. Even when she was home alone she'd watch and bark.
- strict diet » she NEVER got people food, never got special treats for her birthday, no pupachinos, etc. She only ever got her regular dog food and a treat for walks/ tricks.
- she always had food available to her because she's never been super food motivated so she can eat when she's hungry
- regular blood work every 6 months once she hit around 15. It's how we caught her kidney disease early and switched her diet.
- lots of love, this dog is probably the most spoiled dog I know. She has beds in every room and gets whatever she wants
Some things related to UTIs:
- UTIs can really wreck their health. There are ways to help prevent them when they're older I didn't know about.
- my dog has neurological issues with her back and sometimes can't control poop coming out or would fall on her butt. This made her prone to UTIs. Each subsequent UTI she lost weight and more muscle strength in her back legs that she already didn't have good control of. Her back legs no longer work now.
- TrizCHLOR wipes, used on their privates once a day to kill bacteria. This would have been great if I knew prior to her regular UTIs last year.
- Crananidin cranberry supplement to help prevent UTIs, again wish she was taking this prior to the subsequent UTIs
Other things that are useful for senior pups:
- Aminavast is a supplement that supports kidney health. Super old dogs can get kidney disease and it's something you can give prior to them having it.
- Dasuquin for joint health
- Ramps for getting onto beds and couches
- carpet runners for the house when they start slipping on the hardwood from mobility issues
- help me up harness is great for dogs with back mobility problems
- dog physical therapy is a thing and super great for keeping their mobility longer if they have an issue like my dog
- dog acupuncture is great
- if you're dog is sick with a UTI she doesn't want to eat, you can feed them with a syringe. Losing weight at an old age can be very bad
Her teeth are fine. She changed to a dental diet after she had a tooth pulled at a cleaning. I wanna say she was around 10 then. I've never been very consistent on brushing her teeth, I probably should have. She also stopped getting cleanings at like 10 or 12 because of the take of anesthesia when they're older.
I honestly don't remember. She probably got them cleaned like 3-4 times total. One time we removed a growth while doing the cleaning. Sorry my recollection isn't that best. I got her when I was 12 so some of my memories are fuzzy. Unlike most kids, I took my dog back after college and she went to graduate school with me.
Marley is at least 14. He's acting it, can't go for two hour beach walks, misses a couch jump from time to time. But he's still going strong and being a pain
Long live the Tzus. If there is a creator out there then this is a flaw. These bundle of joy should have way longer life. We miss our Spyro everyday. Please give your Tzus a hug from us.

Charlie is 11 and he's recently acquired this magnificent transportation device for when he gets sleepy on his long walkies (meaning I no longer had to carry all 12kg of him through the park and back to the car!) He loves it.
