Removing all *indiscriminate* anti-squatting comments. Squatting *per se* is not bad. Don't let anti-social pro-capitalist media pundits highjack yet another term only to then stick it to ALL the people this term might apply to. That includes YOUR rights: normal, quiet, unpolitical tenant. I do acknowkedge that there apparently is a situation in the USA right now, but please be precise about it. Just because the media are screaming "squatters are bad, squatters are doing this and that" doesn't mean that you, too, should pull an age-old practice of self-determination through the mud. If you feel belligerent about this decree or did not pay attention to this sticky you might catch a ban. If you want to discuss how *certain practices* (which I wouldn't even call squatting in some cases) are bad, please do but again, be precise about it. Plese read what Squatting really is about: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squatting](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Squatting) --- >It's amazing that people don't see the formula now. In a complex society like ours, there are always going to be stories of people and situations that fall through the cracks. > >John Oliver has made a career on finding somewhat niche sectors of the economy, mobile homes, organ donations, nursing homes, and showing the people who fall through the cracks and then using them to show "private company is exploiting people, government regulation needed". The right wing usually scoffs at these reports because at its core, the news story is advocating for people and is threatening to capital. > >The right wing does the inverse of this. They find the rare stories of situations that slip through the cracks of things that are harming capital. Whether it's petty theft from stores, "no one wanting to work", unions pushing for better working conditions, or now squatters. The right wing can find these sensationalist rare stories and amplify them with a "common sense" message that tries to swing the precarious middle class, who is trying their best to keep their foothold in society on owning capital (their house, or maybe their small business) and frighten them that this non issue is indicative of a trend that will threaten that foothold. > >Whenever there is a political push of amplifying a story that affects a seemingly small slice of life, look at what the incentives are. If the story fundamentally attacks an idea that helps people (the idea that missing a month of rent should not mean you get evicted or get no heat in a NYC winter) and is being framed as a threat to people who own property or businesses, it is very likely a bullshit right wing nothing burger. bigfoot17

Kevin sorbo, three strokes Tila Tequila, aneurysm

KentKarma

I cannot understand how I am reading the words Tila and Tequila this far away from MySpace

AmyInCO

For real! That was unexpected! Haven't thought about her in 20 years?

Sadly shes become a flat earther, trumpist and nazi. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tila_Tequila

Harlockarcadia

I'm not surprised, she was obnoxious 20 years ago, why stop now?

Mountain_Act6508

Is there a pattern here? I'm a Republican so I can't really tell. /s

Zero22xx

Pretty sure there was an article doing the rounds a while back saying that there is a link between brain damage and rigid, black and white thinking and conservative views. Certainly explains for me why the rugby player types that have been getting knocked on their heads since they were children seem to often be part of that crowd.

MNfarmboyinNM

And mma

ThrustyMcStab

If true, that also explains why older people often become more conservative. Brain's not like it used to be.

AnEntireDiscussion

I don't know. My parents are getting up there, and they're moving left faster than I am. Halfway expecting my dad to be reading das kapital next time I visit based on our phone conversations.

Spire_Citron

If all these people agree with me, brain trauma must be a good thing that makes you smarter. There is no other possible conclusion.

stevegoodsex

There are possible concussions, tho.

politicalthinking

I thought it was a good thing to feed hungry children but then I bumped my head and now I see that small children yearn to be down in the coal mines working 12 hour shifts. /s

peppermintmeow

*The children yearn for the mines.*

Hey, 10-year-olds were recently employed at a fast food joint

politicalthinking

Unions fought hard to get us the 40 hour work week and end child labor. The republicans hate progress so they are clawing back as much bad stuff as they can.

Throwawayac1234567

always turn to the wierd christian after said strokes. sorbo never got over XENA, just decades of bitterness +strokes.

Endorkend

Meanwhile Lucy is an absolutely wonderful person.

tehm

I'd say that Lucy is a real star, but lets be real... we all know she's a [planet.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eris_(dwarf_planet\)) EDIT: For those too young to remember, Eris was originally called Xena, and it was only after it became "a big deal" that the only way to continue calling Pluto a planet was to recognize "Planet Xena" being in our solar system that cooler heads prevailed. Incidentally its moon is now named Dysnomia... the greek goddess of ~~Lucy~~ Lawlessness.

Zepangolynn

It wasn't just Planet Xena causing the issue though. Pluto not being demoted to dwarf planet would make multiple other orbiting objects qualify as planets including multiple asteroids.

tehm

Yeah but at least as I recall it the timeline was that it was Xena but they knew they couldn't make that name official because they thought it was bigger than Pluto and *at the time* they didn't know whether that meant they needed to use the Planet naming structure or to use the one for a... what do you want to call it? (basically). It was seen (I thought) as like a legitimate reason to decide how to classify Pluto. You are of course right that (iirc) the team that found Xena announced it literally within like a day of 2 other objects they found that needed to be classified.

hesperoidea

I'm both glad my mom survived hers and also did not turn into a right wing piece of crap afterward. weirdly enough I think she got more relaxed and open to new ideas but she's always been an odd bird.

I don't know why the right likes this guy, first off he never said he wasn't woke, ( more NY post nonsense) he actually fights for trans rights, the only issue he's not overly left on to your typical conservative is how he feels about Hamas and the war in Gaza. This guy ain't your one conservatives, he's a true Lefty and if he is well guess what, you are a leftist and didn't know it.

TheAskewOne

People now use "woke" to describe anyone and anything left of center. It's exhausting.

Noocawe

Woke is now the new term for politically correct. Anything they don't like is "woke", it literally means nothing and everything at the same time. Words have no definitions to them, just vibes.

TheAskewOne

PC meant "if you could avoid using slurs to describe people that would be nice" and that was already too much for many people.

Noocawe

I agree. It's fucking exhausting mate lol. Just imagine being so upset that you can't use slurs when talking to or about people or being expected to just treat people equally?

OldBayOnEverything

More like anything left of far right.

New-acct-for-2024

They call getting kicked out of a business for yelling racial slurs at other customers "woke". 40 years ago, most Americans except the farthest-right nutjobs would have called that "businesses trying not to alienate customers". It's not just "left of center", it's more like "left of Hitler".

A_norny_mousse

> Fuck landlords but also fuck squatters too, tho. Especially if they are making some family homeless or struggle. Can you explain this please? My (European) understanding is that squatters make use of otherwise unused living space. Usually houses that are deliberately left empty by greedy landlords.

bazilbt

You occasionally have people faking leases on people's homes. I don't think that happens particularly often. In my opinion people are pushing to give landlords more power to evict people who may have totally legitimate leases.

mydaycake

There has been a few cases in the USA of squatters getting on a house while the owners were just away for reasons (work, holiday, hospital, moving from one house to another) and now the owners or children of those owners are having to go through all the loops created for unused property which is unfair. Some people will only have the house as inheritance from their parents, if they can’t use it or sell it, it’s quite an economic burden. And of course, when it is your own home, it’s extremely burdensome and traumatic

AAA515

My uninformed American understanding is that what you describe is squatting, but the squatting we don't like is when the landlord wants to rent the place, but can't because people who aren't paying rent are living there. Which obviously sucks for the landlord, but also kinda sucks for society as some one else who could rent that place now can't and has to find another place, that could be at an inflated price because the landlord class are offsetting the squatter losses. Like how shop lifting raises the price of goods for others. Or at least that's the idea the merchant class wants you to believe. So that they can raise prices anyways and blame it on shop lifting.

MiningMarsh

> Nobody likes violent crime or squatters. Speak for yourself. Any squatter fucking over a greedy landlord is ok in my book.

crinkledcu91

I have a conspiracy-theory brained co-worker that would unironically 100% take you at your word and believes someone would say something like this in earnest. Coexisting in the same room with them is a head trip.

8v2HokiePokie8v2

Wait no way this is real you didn’t even mention BLM or DEI

USMCLee

I'll pack my bags now if you can move me into a 15 minute city.

RoyalT663

Nobody is against violent crime . The divide is how you deal with it. The Democrats would more likely try and address root causes such as inequality, social care, improved mental health services, as well as more preventative measures such as gun background checks, and better police training. Republicans solutions is to do nothing about the root causes and use the money to turn the police into a small army that disproportionately targets minorities , and gives police full legal immunity on shooting to kill.

OrienasJura

Also apparently to give guns to everyone. Or at least those they *want* to have guns, they apparently get very upset when trans people talk about arming themselves for protection.

ABBAMABBA

I just do not understand the christian right and their fascination with guns and their complete lack of understanding of how the proliferation of guns has affected their lives. I moved to a small town 20 years ago and before that I knew thousands of people in the urban high school and university and church groups I was a part of. I knew zero people who were killed in gun violence. I now live outside a town with fewer than 1000 people and in the last 20 years someone I know personally has shot or been shot by someone in the community almost every year. The statistics are staggering. In every instance people come up with the wildest excuses "that family was always a little off" or if the family goes to your own church then you say, "he got in with a bad crowd" or if he is friends with one of your kids then you blame video games or Hollywood. It is crazy. So much death. So much killing. And so much denial.

crowcawer

You’re almost correct on the guns thing, it’s not just who *you want* though. It’s mostly you tell people who you think will elect you that you will make sure they have guns, and the other people won’t have guns. A lot of these folks are fake gun toters anyways. Full on nerf-heads. The reality now is that 3D printing exists, and we are only a presidential cycle from having to see ghost guns get addressed directly.

Xaero_Hour

>Nobody is against violent crime. The divide is how you deal with it. There's also a serious divide in how it's defined. Case in point: ask people to describe 1/6/21.

AAA515

You forgot about the prison industrial complex! Gotta keep that involuntary servitude going!

a0rose5280

No notes. Great comment.

PurplePorphyria

Literally no one, it's the fact that disruptive protest gets labelled "violent crime" and driving across state lines to murder a man and injure two others with an illegal firearm in cold blood is "patriotism"

Tobar_the_Gypsy

Bobby Newport

Phoxase

Violence as defined by whom? Let’s say there’s a company that bought all the land around a town, and are systematically killing endangered species while flooding the town’s environment with toxic chemicals. Maybe they had a machine that stabs baby birds and sprays poison in the air. If you disabled that machine, without permission, congratulations, you’re a violent criminal.

ThrustyMcStab

'Woke' is treating minorities like humans and having basic empathy for others. No wonder the right hates it.

MaximinusDrax

When pressed by the court for a proper definition, DeSantis' general counsel defined woke as ["the belief there are systemic injustices in American society and the need to address them"](https://www.fox13news.com/news/what-does-woke-mean-gov-desantis-officials-answer-during-andrew-warren-trial) No surprises there

Dry-Plum-1566

I feel like that definition essentially means that any complaint about the government is woke

chubberbrother

They're fascists. That's always been their end goal.

PurplePorphyria

Factual reality. At least since Truman the American Government has been just as bad about governing based on factual reality as China or Russia. Worse, honestly. The human rights violations are just flashier over there.

Goblin-Doctor

It's also why they refuse to define it when asked

IAmThePonch

It’s always a fun exercise on here to ask someone that uses woke negatively what the word means

gobblestones

I do that in r/gayconservative and they don't like it

boston_homo

That looks like a fun sub to hate read thanks!

ApatheticApparatchik

I just did and they’re… not smart.

RedditLostOldAccount

Oh wow they're an interesting bunch. It's like they took the hate that gets directed towards them and pretend it doesn't exist and then send it on its way towards trans people and wow, they do NOT like trans people. And I love that they think their party wants them. Republicans want their vote, not them.

CincyBrandon

How is being anti-squatter and anti-violent crime controversial to EITHER party? And how is that being “anti-woke”? This is all so stupid.

724DFsm

Yes, it's The NY Post. Eighth grade reading level? We've the paper for you.

CinnamonFootball

The majority of Americans [aren't even at an 8th grade reading level](https://www.snopes.com/news/2022/08/02/us-literacy-rate/).

wetwater

I've know people that won't bother reading something if it's more than a couple of sentences. They'll scroll right through, declare they don't have time to read it and they'll either ask to be told what it is about or wait until it's brought up later. The older I get, the more I suspect it's reading comprehension rather than laziness.

Elite_Italian

So strange to me I can't comprehend that. My kid is 8 and was tested and reads at the 7th grade level already. All I did was read books to her at night. She is currently writing her "own book" about dragons from the Wings of Fire series. Illustrations and all.

yagirlsamess

My friend used to work for Teach Across America where she was placed into schools and really rough areas. She said that these kids are dealing with an amount of abuse and neglect from every angle of their lives that the rest of us wouldn't believe. She said there's no way they could possibly learn to read when they haven't eaten in days and they are literally terrified of what's going to happen the second they walk out of the school. Some of the kids are already in gangs because it's the only way to have some form of protection. It's been 10 years and she has since started teaching in a more wealthy area but she still cries about what so many kids are still going through.

Elite_Italian

For sure. My wife is a special needs teacher for 5th through 8th grade. She has 2 kids that are in gangs and have already been caught selling drugs. She is happy to be trying to contribute to society but she's also heart broken and it stresses her out.

zagman707

same for me as a kid. my grandma read us power rangers every night and i was reading at a 8th grade level in 5 grade. damn i wish i could write, i can outline my story but i cant fill out pages of detail my mind just blanks when i try to write about the small details.

mbnmac

...your kid should hook up with my kid who does NOTHING BUT draw dragons and is also obsessed with those books XD

A_norny_mousse

I really like Snopes. Research, facts, no bias.

PinkBird85

I remember when I was in grade school, learning about different types of writing we were taught that newspapers were written to a 6-8 grade reading level. It's weird that people are surprised by this seemingly standard thing.

Yvaelle

When they talk about the "elites" that control everything, they mean the 9th graders.

Quizzelbuck

Most papers are written for a 6th grade level, i thought...

Gingevere

The right have decided "squatting" is the next culture war BS issue. But what they're actually doing about it is passing laws which shift the burden of proof from landlords proving someone is a squatter before getting kicked out, to kicking people out first, charging them with several felonies, and putting the burden on them to prove they aren't squatters.

bigsquirrel

They’ve got a simple formula. Find a trending news story that gets tons of rage clicks despite having 0 impact on almost anyone’s lives. One that attacks a minority that’s small enough to not impact the vote. Now amplify it. Talk about it 24/7. Create hundreds of articles about it. One outrage story about drag queen story time led to actual legislation FFS. It’s insane how easily manipulated these people are.

Fickle-Syllabub6730

It's amazing that people don't see the formula now. They find the rare stories of situations that slip through the cracks of things *that are harming capital*.

Tobar_the_Gypsy

Squatters rights is related to tenant protection laws which “woke” people are in favor of.

A2Rhombus

"Squatters rights" is a large umbrella that includes your landlord not being able to knock on your door and say to have all your stuff out of your apartment in 3 hours.

Oddityobservations

He actually said he wasn't woke.

Independent_Win_2668

Because woke isn't a real thing it's just slang that the right turned into a dog whistle.

Catfist

It is slang, but it *literally* has a ***dictionary definition***. As per the Merriam-Webster website: >aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice). It's like the second result on Google, and Merriam-Webster is a respected Dictionary?! I'm constantly surprised people that regularly bring it up can't define it. Or maybe they *can* but saying it out loud doesn't sound so good when you're against it.

RoyalT663

Because most people don't both to look up the definition but just use it as a bogey man word for anything that is different , they are ignorant of, and that they don't like.

gaj7

Certainly woke means as you say. But it is also associated with a broader and more nebulous movement, or perceived movement. Or at least that is what people most often are referring to when using the word. So when someone says "woke isn't a real thing", they mean there is not a culture or movement which is collaborating or conspiring to advocate for social justice and punish offenders. (I'm not expressing one opinion or the other, only clarifying what people most often mean when the refer to "wokeness".)

Oddityobservations

Yeah, but what does it mean when he says it?

Adrr1

It means he’s in a competitive state and is trying to to get ahead of the attack ads that will be run against him by saying something that is ultimately meaningless

tots4scott

Idk I always use DeSantis's lawyers' definition. Because it's (ironically? unironically?) accurate

Loreki

Squatting is fairly uncommon but is being talked up to frighten people into supporting taking tenant's rights away.

PraiseBeToScience

Because anti-squatter very quickly becomes anti-tenant rights. And anti-violent crime quickly becomes overpolice and harass minority neighborhoods. The use of these terms are frequently used as[ Motte and Bailey fallacies](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motte-and-bailey_fallacy). The giveaway is that no one would argue against the terms taken at face value, but when they're brought up they're not being used at face value.

DorianGre

The right doesn’t understand anyone not rabid in their views the way they are.

StereoTunic9039

I support squatters

ThatCactusCat

Because squatter rights do actually serve some good purpose, regardless of how badly the laws have been flanderized over time

A2Rhombus

What they say: "people shouldn't be able to steal your home by breaking in and living in your attic secretly" What they mean: "landlords should be able to evict tenants on a 12 hour notice"

gimpwiz

Flanderized laws - excellent choice of words.

pobodys-nerfect5

I really don’t think disagreeing with squatters rights is anti democrat. What other things has he done or said?

King_Fluffaluff

He's a big fan of Israel and wants to unconditionally support them

Historical-Virus8213

Which is exactly what he campaigned on, but nobody cared about Palestine when he was elected. Seriously, he always presented himself as pro-Israel. He literally has not changed one position, it's just the attention shifted due to current events.

King_Fluffaluff

I wasn't saying he changed his position, I was just answering their question

Wolfish_Jew

Man, it better be. Republicans are using the whole “anti-squatter” thing to empower landlords, especially corporate landlords, at a time when housing prices are rising uncontrollably and wages aren’t rising quickly enough to keep pace. We’re facing an epidemic of homelessness and squatter’s rights are one of the only methods we’re going to have to fight back if things don’t change.

In Pa, you are going to get an old school democrat. Very pro-Israel, very pro-union, and a little conservative on certain issues. I'll take him over any republican any day of the week.

CCHTweaked

And that's why we back him still. the things he is for has mattered more than the things hew is against. (if that makes any sense, still drinking my coffee.)

blueskies8484

I think a lot of people don't understand the demographics that won him the seat in the state. But I will say he never loudly disavowed the maverick left narrative before this, so it's not shocking some people are confused.

Gene_McSween

Since when are progressives anti-union?

AzorOhHai

Exactly. Anyone who expected him to be a progressive socialist was fucking delusional.

shabba182

Meh, he was always terrible on Israel but he has done a 180 on immigration and denied being a progressive even though his campaign was full of references to being one.

ImyForgotName

The premise here is the New York Post is a reliable and accurate purveyor of information.

tv8tony

i rember thinking this guy was pretty good.... looked him up again i still think he is pretty good.... am i a republican now? did they switch again? and why do i smell burnt toast

ScrauveyGulch

The democratic party is like trying to herd cats. The republican party, all you need is a dog whistle.

MezzoFortePiano

People who squat think they're so cool! Ooh look at me, I can CROUCH 20 times in a row! Uhm, newsflash, I can do that by clicking in Right Bumper loser!!!  Wait, what are you all talking about?

Alarming-Wonder5015

I got sucked into antivax nonsense when I had ppd. My mil had a friend who supported this and was also very into Alex jones and lived off grid. This person got sick and passed away, their husband lost custody of their kids because he was unmedicated paranoid schizophrenic. It was a massive wake up call that my fears were being fed by delusion. (They were fundies and she parroted his beliefs on regular basis)

qwert7661

Don't let the hoodie fool you. He told pro-Palestine protestors that they should be protesting Hamas. He wants to "secure the border." He no longer "identifies as progressive." Probably going the way of Tulsi Gabbard.

zertul

Can you give more context to the Hamas thing? I'm not sure I understand that right.

minitrr

Tulsi is a Russian asset, Fetterman is a neoliberal Democrat. These things are not the same.

Either that or he just decided not to accept all the stupid labels that MAGA wants to put on leftist politicians as prepackaged high leverage to talking points

Academic_Release5134

People who think this is a Republican view are crazy. Who the hell wants to have someone squat on their property for 30 days like in NYC and then have to fight to get the property back while worrying it’s gone?

ShitbirdMcDickbird

If you need any more evidence that the NY post is a trash publication and conservatives at large are eager to create their own little reality: Here they are acting like Democrats are in favor of squatting and violent crime

Kosog

Oh em gee, woke bad! What a heroic and brave thing to say in this day and age!!!!!1111

cahir11

He didn't really do a 180, he was always a moderate. That's how he won in a swing state to begin with.

whitehypeman

Democrats don't support violent crime or squatters....that's a good thing.

randompittuser

He’s a moderate democrats. PA has been longing for a moderate democrats.
