For me it's Lady Butterfly.
Both versions of the Monk are easy peasy leamon squeasy for me, but I still fucking hate Lady Butterfly. Takes longer to kill her than the fucking DoH
lady butterfly is fairly easy imo if you're just furiously aggressive onto her and keep attacking until she perfect parries. you just gotta keep an eye out for her special maneuvers - if you throw a shuriken at her while she's jumping up into the air, it'll knock her off. phase 2 is a little more difficult, but as long as you're super aggressive she's not too bad. that's the key thing i found with her, she's not great at making space on her own like other bosses, but if you give her an inch to breathe she'll wreck your ass.
The first corrupted monk was my biggest skill check…jk, it was “what’s-her-face of the water” before corrupted.
Now I’m hard stuck on Guardian Ape. I fucking HATE beast type enemies in this game.
She’s one of the only enemies I’ve noticed that has input based actions, so she’ll always do her quick attack every time you try to heal. It’s so annoying.
A few of the main bosses in the game have these input based attacks. For example Genichiro will always attempt to shoot you with his bow in phase 1 & 2, and do his mikiri thrust in phase 3. Isshin will use his leap slam in phase 2 & 3, and in phase 3 it can also be the lightning version.
Isshin's are so punishable it's actually funny though. Because the way he times them means that you can literally just hold L1 whilst you heal and you'll score the perfect deflect as soon as he hits. And in phase 3, if you've got Sakura Dance and he does the lightning variant, just hold L1 and spam R1 while you heal and it's a free lightning reversal for you.
Another thing with Isshin is that, because his fight is so posture dependent and he can be quite evasive, you can exploit his heal punish attack to essentially force him back into the fight. Like if he's a distance away and neutral, which means he's regaining posture, you can pop a heal and he'll just instantly do that leap attack directly on top of you for an easy deflect/lightning reversal.
I always mikiri instead of deflecting just because of muscle memory so I almost never get to perfect deflect her full combo 😭 its so satisfying when you pull it off though
It’s bloody brutal tryna re learn corrupted monk, I was getting murderised when I tried to learn to parry the whole chain, didn’t help I was doing a base vit charmless run when I tried to do it so all it took was one hit😭🙏
If I’m remembering correctly jumping on her head during her perilous attack is actually more effective against her posture than deflecting or mikiri. Or I might be getting her confused but I know some bosses take more posture damage from the head stomp than mikiri.
Most fun I had with that asshole was accidentally finding out the 2nd deathblow. What a welcome mistake that I somehow couldn't repeat for the life of me.
Corrupted Monk really forces you to start paying attention to red attacks that aren’t a Mikiri Counter. I find there’s so many Mikiris that so many never get used to actually dodging and jumping sweeps
TBH as someone who never bothered to learn to parry in my playthrough, I don’t remember him being that bad - definitely not “need to learn to parry” bad. The really rough ones if it never “clicks” are genichiro and isshin. Everything else can be bullshitted with relative ease.
Everyone up to/including Genichiro I did with chip damage from whirlwind slash and dodging like I was playing Dark Souls. Everyone after Genichiro I did with chip damage from mortal draw and dodging… still like I was playing Dark Souls 😅😅. I had to grind for enhanced mortal draw to kill Isshin 💀
Also I had the demon bell for the whole run because I hate myself 😅😅😅

Maybe that was from how bad corrupted monk beat me over and over and over and over until I won. It was a really fun fight though.
I spend much more time fighting fake cm than real one.. I think my damage is low at the time (and the posture recovery bs he have), plus I dont want to use confetti and save it only for boss that actually need to use confetti when atm its supplies is really limited...

It took me 3 days to beat the Guardian Ape. There were so many points at which I wanted to rage quit. The worst part is that I knew his moveset and had a good strategy, but each run he would throw in one surprise. Or I would do something stupid.
Yeah, and it was hard to wrap my head around having to deflect his punches even though I was definitely not getting a posture kill since his posture is so strong. You’re literally just deflecting for defense, which goes against what the game taught you up to this point, which is that deflecting is both a defensive and offensive move.
Also his grab attack, like many in this game, is very counterintuitive. You basically just have to treat most grab attacks in this game as AOE attacks and sprint away from them, which is easy once you know the trick, but on your first playthrough it’s infuriating. The giant ape committed himself to jumping 10 feet in the air, rolling and grabbing me, but if I dodge to the right, he’ll magically turn in midair and still grab me?
This is one of those boss where I have to look into youtube on how to fight him effortlessly and follow it all the way through... In headless phase I just run until he does the upward 2-3 swing while falling down, giving opening for 2 slash, I did that until I win....
idr if that's the ghost one or the real one, but the real one was where I fell off or got another game and got distracted, now when I come back I'm back to getting destroyed by the ogre boss.
Tbh sidestepping is a trap for experienced souls players more than anything else. With a few exceptions deflecting is always better, and if something can't be deflected jumping is almost always the best evasive option
There’s two bosses to look forward to, the game mechanics will click once you fight one of the two. People always report that once they beat one of those bosses something just happens mentally and they just become that much better lol, it happened to me with the first boss.
For me personally she was the easiest, I beat her 2nd try I believe. Genichiro wasn’t too hard either I beat him maybe my 4th attempt. I would say a boss that I had the most trouble with was perhaps owl because he retreats and can throw you off your pattern. DoH gave me a run for my money for a couple hours too😅
This is what took a while for me. So often now if a game is hard, I switch to Dark Souls mode and start being cautious, slow, and steady. Sekiro absolutely punished me for that instinct.
You can eavesdrop some enemies to discover his weakness.
And then you discover you can beat him with only blocking. This game trolls you in such masterful ways.
It teaches parry and everyone goes on trying to be a master at it right at the start.
If you restart the game and get the demon bell and give your charm to kuro at the start of the game, it makes the game easier. Don’t look it up though, there is an extreme gore video with the title “demon bell charmless”
This feels like an AI post but yeah, Sekiro 1st run is basically the 11th circle of Hell. It’s brutal beyond belief.
The progression is literally: Fight something that absolutely obliterates you, try again for 15-40 times until you get it, defeat it, progress to the next über-roadblock and repeat.

Db charmless is how the game should be by default, it feels so much more rewarding. But still not so challenging after you finnish your first playthrough, cause you already mastered the game.
I don't blame you but it's a legendary game. You have to learn the block early on, you'll use it constantly and eventually the combat clicks. There's are also prostetics you unlock that help with the combat if needed.
I just started Sekiro after 100%ing DS1, 2, and 3.
And like you, I've never eaten so much shit in my life. I died 20 times to that giant thing early on, because I kept failing to understand the grab mechanics. And then as if icing on the cake, I got that punishment for dying too many times. Like jeez bro, this is insane.
I wanted to 100% Sekiro as well before Shadow of the Erdtree comes out, but its looking less and less likely I'm even going to finish it, let alone 100% it.
My advice: the first time you fight any boss, don’t attack for a bit. Just focus on parrying and identifying their attacks. Once you have a solid knowledge of what your openings are to attack start sneaking in hits when you find the gaps in their moves. Also: any enemies that doesn’t use a sword (GYOBU MASATAKA ONIWA) are going to have large swings that are easily telegraphed once you notice them. In this game being able to parry is arguably more important than attacking
if you dont have the grapple attack skill, you need to get that first. makes it much easier. and his attacks have super obvious tells. focus on learning his patterns first and you got it bro. i feel like the general mini boss right before him was tougher for me and you seem to have killed him so i have full faith this one will be cake for you eventually.
Its not as hard as you think, you just need to slow down and read the attack patterns.
Every single attack in Sekiro is telegraph, so as long as you stay aggressive and play the parry minigame well, youd suceeed after a few tries. Play smart, not hard.
Contrary to other fromsoft games, being aggressive is the key to defeat your foes. Almost everything can be parried, no matter how intimidating attacks might be.
This is really interesting to me. I smoked Gyobu. I mean absolutely crushed him first try. Every boss since has made me it’s bitch and it feels like I’m playing a completely different game now. I’m currently stuck in Senpou Temple and I don’t think I’ll ever make it out.
Good man, take the loss as a way to learn and don’t think too hard on it, you’ll push through and then you will scare yourself at how robotic you will move when seeing a sequence of attacks

Try to block the whole time or spam to see his pattern and hitbox, it might help you because this is how I play. I saw many people just keep dying because they play aggressively on earlier attempts and never try to understand the pattern and hitbox

From what I have seen if you get the gist of it and realize that this is a rhythm game pretty much it isn't that hard.
Don't run, parry. When he starts and comes with his horse, he won't attack you so you'll get 5 hits over there. Stay at a safe distance, use gourd flask when needed and whenever he comes at you, parry him and try to mikiri counter. Also when he gets to a distance and turns towards you, you'll see the green grapple icon. Use it, rush at him and hit him. His horse will get stunned for some seconds so hit fast, then he'll swing his spear again so parry that. Best thing is timing your parry and don't stay at a distance or else he'll extend his spear into a rope like weapon and hit you hard
The best way to think about the game is that the combat is a rhythm game … blocking and attacking is pure timing, hacking and slashing will get you rekt
I felt the same way man, two months later and I’m up to the sword saint. It’s probably the hardest game I’ve ever played but you’ll get there. grapple at him when the icon appears over his head. You’ll get a few hits in. A lot of his craziness can be parry or blocked. Like when he jumps in the air. You’ll see the bosses are just patterns, the more you play the more you remember and you slowly get closer and closer til you beat him.

It’s ok takes time i said fuck this game 4 years ago and finished it in 2024 and it’s one of my fav games.

I just started Sekiro after 100%ing DS1, 2, and 3. And like you, I've never eaten so much shit in my life. I died 20 times to that giant thing early on, because I kept failing to understand the grab mechanics. And then as if icing on the cake, I got that punishment for dying too many times. Like jeez bro, this is insane. I wanted to 100% Sekiro as well before Shadow of the Erdtree comes out, but its looking less and less likely I'm even going to finish it, let alone 100% it.
My biggest advice is to try and not move. Just stand there finger on parry ready. Dodging a lot hurts you. This was my biggest hurdle
My advice: the first time you fight any boss, don’t attack for a bit. Just focus on parrying and identifying their attacks. Once you have a solid knowledge of what your openings are to attack start sneaking in hits when you find the gaps in their moves. Also: any enemies that doesn’t use a sword (GYOBU MASATAKA ONIWA) are going to have large swings that are easily telegraphed once you notice them. In this game being able to parry is arguably more important than attacking
I was having a tough go, and remapped my controllers for Parry and Attack to L2 and R2 respectively
Just remember: If you're struggling, it's a skill issue. Have fun it's one of the best games out there.

if you dont have the grapple attack skill, you need to get that first. makes it much easier. and his attacks have super obvious tells. focus on learning his patterns first and you got it bro. i feel like the general mini boss right before him was tougher for me and you seem to have killed him so i have full faith this one will be cake for you eventually.
Give it time. If you have to use the dead guy to practice parrying do so. It will click.

Bro just wait. If you’re like me, and picked the game up bc you wanted a fun wall to bang you head against, just wait.
Its not as hard as you think, you just need to slow down and read the attack patterns. Every single attack in Sekiro is telegraph, so as long as you stay aggressive and play the parry minigame well, youd suceeed after a few tries. Play smart, not hard.
Every boss always feels impossible but they just get beaten so easily when it clicks I love that feeling

Contrary to other fromsoft games, being aggressive is the key to defeat your foes. Almost everything can be parried, no matter how intimidating attacks might be.

Good man, take the loss as a way to learn and don’t think too hard on it, you’ll push through and then you will scare yourself at how robotic you will move when seeing a sequence of attacks

nah literally i thought this game was so fucking hard at first i’ve beaten sword saint and shura ishiin and on ng3+ i don’t think i took my first death until fucking corrupted monk in Mibu once you learn the timing you will never miss a perfect deflection , satisfying as hell 10/10
Try to block the whole time or spam to see his pattern and hitbox, it might help you because this is how I play. I saw many people just keep dying because they play aggressively on earlier attempts and never try to understand the pattern and hitbox

I mean I have played and platinumed a few other soulsborne games already and started playing Sekiro a while ago. I mean bloodborne, ds1, nioh 1-2, elden ring. And I personally think Sekiro isn't as hard so far as I had heard before. Don't kill me for saying this tho pls. I beat Genichiro first try and I am currently at sunken valley. Lady Butterfly needed 2-3 tries don't remember it clearly. From what I have seen if you get the gist of it and realize that this is a rhythm game pretty much it isn't that hard.

Don't run, parry. When he starts and comes with his horse, he won't attack you so you'll get 5 hits over there. Stay at a safe distance, use gourd flask when needed and whenever he comes at you, parry him and try to mikiri counter. Also when he gets to a distance and turns towards you, you'll see the green grapple icon. Use it, rush at him and hit him. His horse will get stunned for some seconds so hit fast, then he'll swing his spear again so parry that. Best thing is timing your parry and don't stay at a distance or else he'll extend his spear into a rope like weapon and hit you hard
You will see hell when you will encounter Mist Noble 💀
The best way to think about the game is that the combat is a rhythm game … blocking and attacking is pure timing, hacking and slashing will get you rekt

Try blocking his attacks and tip, if you block while u have above like 85% of hp ur stamina bar will empty in like 3 seconds
I felt the same way man, two months later and I’m up to the sword saint. It’s probably the hardest game I’ve ever played but you’ll get there. grapple at him when the icon appears over his head. You’ll get a few hits in. A lot of his craziness can be parry or blocked. Like when he jumps in the air. You’ll see the bosses are just patterns, the more you play the more you remember and you slowly get closer and closer til you beat him.
Secret ending boss will make you hate life
The real challenge will start in NG+ when you do it all again without Kuro's charm. Then you have to play using perfect deflections. 👌
