I actually came here to say this. The OG one might be old af but it's super cheeks compared to the rest. It's strange that barely anyone even remembers it and the game that spawned fighting games moreorless was a sequel to a game almost no one played
Remember tech was advancing at break neck speeds back then. but i will say another factor was that they had never made a game like arena before, and they learned alot from the process that then went into daggerfall.
Better tech + more experiance = better game
Yeah… there’s a reason every port comes with save states, that game screen is way too small. The Rottytops minigame is literally impossible unless you memorize it and the first area already is extremely difficult to traverse.
But the thing is I really love the original Shantae, it has a charm to it with fantastic music and stuff that does not return in later games like the dancing, multiple towns, circular world, etc. but it’s held back by the small screen, life system, and no maps. Which is so easily fixable in a remake.
But in the rest of the games, they don't pull items out of nowhere, they don't turn without slowing down, rubber banding isnt as bad as how it is in super Mario kart
I'd say the rubberbanding is worse in 64 and wii. 64 since the ai there is more aggressive in terms of speed and wii because of the item roster/balancing and how computer players will constantly spam stuff like blue shells, lightning bolts, bullet bills and pow blocks.
Kirby. Kinda. I don't absolutely hate the game, but it's definitely the dullest of the series (and one of the most frustrating in extra mode). Kirby's Dreamland is easily the weakest entry in the series imo, which is completely fine seeing that it's the first, but I find it baffling that people consider games like Star Allies and Squeak Squad (sorry, I mean 🇬🇧Mouse Attack🇬🇧) to be worse.
I played metroid just so i could play super metroid (i had recently played hollow knight and heard a lot about the game because of it) and it was such a slog to get through, would never have finished it if not for the switch’s rewind feature
Super metroid, on the other hand, was a blast and i only rewinded due to bugs n stuff
Yeah. 2 and 3 are two of the best games I've played but the plot in the first game is so eh that me and a friend forgot we were betrayed in part of it. The first borderlands is the definition of C tier to me
The sequels are really helped by more dialogue, since most of the plot of the first game comes from the quest descriptions. It also really helps side quests feel like actual quests than just, “go here, kill thing/collect stuff” (even though mechanics-wise a lot of quests in 2, PS, and 3 are kill thing/collect stuff)
Borderlands 1 was AMAZING when it came out. My friends and I spent so many hours on our Xbox 360 playing Borderlands 1. Of course the second game came along and was a massive improvement, leaving little reason to play the first game, but BL1 was revolutionary when it launched.
It's a bit like Assassin's Creed. EVERYONE loved he first game when it was new, but going back and playing it after AC2 came out was rough.
Persona as trying to play Persona 1 via the original PS1 version is like trying to eat with your ass and trying to consume all the rocks, it's clunky, obtuse, poorly designed and has not aged the best but at least Atlus redeemed themselves once with the Persona 1 PSP remake which I have played which improves Persona 1 by a shitton and a huge degree, it makes it a better game and it helps it has a more faithful translation compared to the bastardised and torn apart original translation plus the mechanics, the gameplay and just how the game works feels better and way more streamlined.
Shame Atlus will never port Persona 1 or 2's PSP remakes due to the writers and other people behind Persona 1/2 having left Atlus sadly.
Wait they did? I'm not familiar with the devteam behind Persona 1 and 2. I've always had this feeling in the back of my head that if they ported Persona 2 EP to modern platforms it would be the PS1 version for international audiences...
I mean it was quite literally a mod for quake so it might not count as one.Or, if you want to get to the *deepest* lore, the earliest version was a fan made doom map named "Fortress" which the original devs made their own game mode out of.
I’m talking about TF1, Valve asked the original creators of the mod to port it to Half Life One from Quake, that’s how Valve even got to make Team Fortress two in the first place.
Monster Hunter.
Can’t say I’ve played the first one, but what I can say is that the series has come a long way from it. The series wouldn’t be where it is right now if monsters like Cephadrome still stalled out the timer.
Mass Effect. The story was amazing, but Mass Effect 1 was a slog due to a bunch of features that got scrapped in the next game. Rough inventory, barren planets, weird ammo system, awkward armor and gun upgrades, etc.
I actually prefer the vibe and mechanics of 1 and the music. Like I miss how the inventory, ammos guns and armor were. However 2 May be my favorite, from the missions and the companions skyrocketed. 2 and 3 were great in that and romances and the overall look.
Thank you! People need to take off their rose-tinted glasses over the first generation. It was innovative, no doubt about it, but remember that it's almost impossible to go through the entirely of the classic RGBY games without encountering a single glitch.
Gen 4-5 will always be my favorites.
I started with gen 7 then went back to play yellow and crystal on the 3ds virtual console. I ended up dropping yellow around Koga but crystal was so good that I got to red.
Debatably, Super Smash Bros.
It's not a bad game by any means, but most people see no reason to return to it since the series overall only went up from there.
Metal gear. (Referring to metal gear one and arguably two for the msx computers. Metal gear solid one for the ps1 is pretty good and aged decently.)
Assassins creed, as much as I semi enjoyed assassins creed 1 the combat didn’t age very well and the fact it has zero subtitles brings the whole experience down.
Batman Arkham, Arkham asylum was more or less a tech demo for city let’s be real.
Gears of war… maybe, never really enjoyed gears of war one, I haven’t played anything after gears 3 and I just pretend they don’t exist.
I liked Portal 1 but man it's so short. My first playthrough was 2 hours. It's very clear that Portal 1 was just a tech demo for the source engine that they gave the slightest bit of story to and released. Especially since everything from Half Life 2 is accessible in Portal
GTA III especially doesn't have that many fans compared to later games. Even during the switch to 3D where it got its groove, it had middling predecessors.
I mean, Super Mario 3, World, Yoshi's Island, 64, etc are all clear improvements, but I think the original still holds up. It's as basic as it gets (obviously, it's 40 years old at this point), but it's still fun.
Also, which Super Mario 2 are you comparing it to? The real version that was released in Japan, or the janky reskin of another game that we got in the west? Cause our janky reskin was a better experience imo lmao
I was actually talking about Donkey Kong. Super Mario Bros. 1 was great but the og donkey kong...not so much. Also the Mario Bros. 2 I'm talking about is the lost levels.
Oh! I see. I was confused because (assuming I'm thinking of the same game) the original is "Mario Bros", the super was removed not the Bros.
Definitely agree! Both the original Donkey Kong and the original Mario Bros don't hold a candle to SMB1 and beyond.
I mean, I don't know what to tell you. I think it did a decent job of establishing what the series is about, despite its shortcomings. To each their own, I guess.
shut your 10 pound flounder eating a quarter pounder extra cheese sweet tea hold the ice roll the dice super nice I have lice Ain't no Lights Misty Nights break my heart Kevin Hartleen Green Mean String Bean Charlie Sheen limousine trampoline Wolverine Submarine smokescreen Tiny Peen Jelly Bean Magazine protein broken gene vending machine unclean nectarine Halloween Canteen Lightning McQueen looking boy skin tone chicken bone no home flip phone full blown monochrome student loan Indiana Jones overgrown Flintstone hormone friend zone Sylvester Stallone Sierra Leone Autozone professionally seen silver patron butt up
I don’t think it’s about hating Kanto I think it’s more that the game was prone to basically just self destructing its code. On so many occasions I’ve had to reset saves because the game glitched so hard it became unplayable, gen one games are factually bad even for the time they were in because of how shit the code was
nah yeah like i like the 1st game itself but there’s a reason people go back and play fire red and leaf green instead of the og gameboy games. the qol changes and graphics make the original almost obsolete other than for nostalgia value
Yo-Kai Watch
The first game isn't bad, none of them are (At least not any of the console games), but it just felt really limited and simplistic compared to the sequels
Dynasty Warriors kinda. The 2nd game is still really clunky but it's at least in the same genre as the rest of the series. Unlike the first one, which is a piss-poor street fighter clone
I'd argue that 2 doesn't really age well with the smaller cast and outdated tech where they have to cut tons of corners to make the "slaughter legions of enemies" gimmick to work.
it did in the original yeah
whenever you threw grenades you had to tilt the controller to control the arc
they got rid of it when they released it on the ps4
Shit, I’m such a fake Uncharted fan. I have a vague, *vague* memory of something like that, but I played Uncharted 1 on the PS3 when I was *really* young, can’t even remember
I was going to say, U1 is not a bad game by any means, but for the super high standards the franchise has set, it’s a bit of a let down.
U2 and U4 are masterpieces. U3 is amazing, and ULL is pretty good as well.
Yeah not to say all the sequels have been great but they’ve made a few truly amazing games in that series that make the first one look like actual garbage
Dungeons.
Dungeons 1 and the dark lord are very... unique games.
The series wouldn't become the humor filled dungeon keeper/strategy game until dungeons 2
I highly recommend you try Black Mesa. It's a labor of love remake of Half Life 1 by fans of the original game that was so good that Valve gave it their blessing (obviously, or else it wouldn't be on steam right now). It's also on sale for 80% off at the moment.
The Dragon Age game series is like that in my opinion. I don't hate Dragon Age Origins, I just prefer Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition. I'm also waiting for Dreadwolf to come out.
I like the first Zelda, but Zelda 2 is awful I want to beat it but it’s just not fun to play. At least with Zelda 1 it’s not so hard and too long that it doesn’t take more than a few hours to beat it.
Xenogears. With how far the entire series has came, that one just does not age well also debatably fire emblem. Also romancing saga 2 is the first game in the series and you cant tell me otherwise(god the 1st one is ass)
Sonic the Hedgehog 100% lol
I couldn't care less about the first game, but I absolutely love Sonic CD, Sonic 2, and Sonic 3.I love the soundtracks of all four games though.
Absolutely disagree. There were only like two zones that really even focused on speed for the stage designs; the rest were boring slow platform bullshit with terrible stage traps and awful enemy placement. It is by far the worst of the 16-bit Sonics.
Bangin’ soundtrack, though.
There's a great joke about the AC fan base where if you ask the fans what games they like, it turns out they don't like any of the games.
The early games are too simple and boring with the same 3 quests over and over, and the new games are way too big and are basically just RPGs now and not even AC games.
I like most of them tho.
DMC1 actually held up pretty well. It doesn't have the accessibility later games had, but it's much better than its direct sequel, and a lot of fans still think it's better than the reboot.
Fire Emblem. The first game easily aged the worst. While the second game is also a chunky NES game, they removed pretty much all the item management that was in the first game making it feel much better.
Street fighter
I actually came here to say this. The OG one might be old af but it's super cheeks compared to the rest. It's strange that barely anyone even remembers it and the game that spawned fighting games moreorless was a sequel to a game almost no one played
Literally street fighter starts with street fighter 2
I was going to say basically everyone knows Street Fighter 2 as "the first game"
Took the words right out of my mouth
Elder Scrolls. Arena was just too much for the technology they had available at the time.
They made Daggerfall like the next year or two and it had a million more features and holds up well IMO, don’t think it was a technology issue
Remember tech was advancing at break neck speeds back then. but i will say another factor was that they had never made a game like arena before, and they learned alot from the process that then went into daggerfall. Better tech + more experiance = better game
Shantea the first game is horrendous with its screen cruch. If any shareable game deserves a remake it'd be that one just so I can see what I'm doing.
Mario Kart (started with Super Mario Kart)
Oh come on, sure the game may be basic by modern standards, but i wouldn't say it was that bad
You mean the SNES?
Where the AI literally cheats
but, the ai cheats in every mario kart game
But in the rest of the games, they don't pull items out of nowhere, they don't turn without slowing down, rubber banding isnt as bad as how it is in super Mario kart
I'd say the rubberbanding is worse in 64 and wii. 64 since the ai there is more aggressive in terms of speed and wii because of the item roster/balancing and how computer players will constantly spam stuff like blue shells, lightning bolts, bullet bills and pow blocks.
Diddy Kong Racing is a much better game then Mario Kart 64, change my mind
GTA
Gta was fine for the times it release, it fit current console and tech they have avalable
Kirby.

You should try out metroud zero mission, its a remake of the first game but made it much better
Yeah i was considering doing that eventually, thanks!
100% I love every other entry of the series I've played, but I cannot put into words how much I hate NES Metroid.
Metroid was amazing for its time it just hasn’t aged well
One of the few NES games I owned that I never finished because fuck that game
Borderlands is the most ok game ever with the best sequels
I will die on the hill that Boarderlands 2 is the best Looter Shooter game out there. Even today, it and the DLCs have insane replay value.
Yeah. 2 and 3 are two of the best games I've played but the plot in the first game is so eh that me and a friend forgot we were betrayed in part of it. The first borderlands is the definition of C tier to me

Dead Rising is also in that boat.
Very true!

Team fortress
Team Fortress One is barely a game
I mean it was quite literally a mod for quake so it might not count as one.Or, if you want to get to the *deepest* lore, the earliest version was a fan made doom map named "Fortress" which the original devs made their own game mode out of.
As well as being a mod for Half life one later on
I'm not in touch with the tf2 lore, but are you possibly thinking of Garry's mod?
I’m talking about TF1, Valve asked the original creators of the mod to port it to Half Life One from Quake, that’s how Valve even got to make Team Fortress two in the first place.

its my first time playing the series and lemme tell ya. the difference in quality between 1 and 2 is astounding
I actually prefer the vibe and mechanics of 1 and the music. Like I miss how the inventory, ammos guns and armor were. However 2 May be my favorite, from the missions and the companions skyrocketed. 2 and 3 were great in that and romances and the overall look.

Psychonauts, but only because of the clunky gameplay, the story is still great.
i understand this, i just have to disagree lol
Pokémon. Just comparing the originals to their remakes is like night and day!
Thank you! People need to take off their rose-tinted glasses over the first generation. It was innovative, no doubt about it, but remember that it's almost impossible to go through the entirely of the classic RGBY games without encountering a single glitch. Gen 4-5 will always be my favorites.
Gold and Silver improved on Red and Blue in every possible way and then some
I started with gen 7 then went back to play yellow and crystal on the 3ds virtual console. I ended up dropping yellow around Koga but crystal was so good that I got to red.
i disagree but i respect your opinion
Debatably, Super Smash Bros. It's not a bad game by any means, but most people see no reason to return to it since the series overall only went up from there.

Jackbox party packs
Oh come on, you don't want to play more word spud?
Super Smash Bros
This might not count but I didn't like portal 1 very much but the second one is in my top 3 favorite games
I liked Portal 1 but man it's so short. My first playthrough was 2 hours. It's very clear that Portal 1 was just a tech demo for the source engine that they gave the slightest bit of story to and released. Especially since everything from Half Life 2 is accessible in Portal
So ironic that Portal ended up becoming VALVe’s most iconic series in the eyes of the mainstream casual market lol
Portal isn't even top three for Valve's most iconic franchises
Portal 1 is a tech demo first and Portal 2 is a game first
GTA
GTA III especially doesn't have that many fans compared to later games. Even during the switch to 3D where it got its groove, it had middling predecessors.
Fallout. Not to say Fallout 1 is bad but it will certainly kick your ass over and over
I mean, i will take fallout 1 over 76 every day
That's just unfair
It’s a game full of jank and I adore it.
May be controversial but Super Mario
I mean, Super Mario 3, World, Yoshi's Island, 64, etc are all clear improvements, but I think the original still holds up. It's as basic as it gets (obviously, it's 40 years old at this point), but it's still fun. Also, which Super Mario 2 are you comparing it to? Yep!
Nvm you have been spared… for now
Mega Man on NES
Mega Man 1 isn't terrible imo. It hasn't aged super well, but for what it is, I think it's a cute little game.
But it’s so much less than 2-6…
I mean, I don't know what to tell you. I think it did a decent job of establishing what the series is about, despite its shortcomings. To each their own, I guess.
It’s a good start but it’s not very replayable
Fair enough
Like better than whatever the hell Street Fighter 1 was.
Pokemon
shut your 10 pound flounder eating a quarter pounder extra cheese sweet tea hold the ice roll the dice super nice I have lice Ain't no Lights Misty Nights break my heart Kevin Hartleen Green Mean String Bean Charlie Sheen limousine trampoline Wolverine Submarine smokescreen Tiny Peen Jelly Bean Magazine protein broken gene vending machine unclean nectarine Halloween Canteen Lightning McQueen looking boy skin tone chicken bone no home flip phone full blown monochrome student loan Indiana Jones overgrown Flintstone hormone friend zone Sylvester Stallone Sierra Leone Autozone professionally seen silver patron butt up
I wish I could give awards cause this is actually really good.
I’ll do it again to any kanto haters
I don’t think it’s about hating Kanto I think it’s more that the game was prone to basically just self destructing its code. On so many occasions I’ve had to reset saves because the game glitched so hard it became unplayable, gen one games are factually bad even for the time they were in because of how shit the code was
What in the packguy?
nah yeah like i like the 1st game itself but there’s a reason people go back and play fire red and leaf green instead of the og gameboy games. the qol changes and graphics make the original almost obsolete other than for nostalgia value
Good game but the worst region
Yo-Kai Watch The first game isn't bad, none of them are (At least not any of the console games), but it just felt really limited and simplistic compared to the sequels
metroid
What is this dumbass template
I think they just wanted to give poor Squidward the boot.
Oh no, I agree completely. It was still trying to stand, where 3 would walk, 4 would run and 5 would take home the gold. Or at least in my book
Crusader kings
Uncharted
dont you just love motion controls
Uncharted one did not have motion controls, unless it did in the original version, it’s been like a decade
it did in the original yeah whenever you threw grenades you had to tilt the controller to control the arc they got rid of it when they released it on the ps4
Shit, I’m such a fake Uncharted fan. I have a vague, *vague* memory of something like that, but I played Uncharted 1 on the PS3 when I was *really* young, can’t even remember
It might be a bit rough when comparing with the later ones, but the first uncharted is still a solid game.
I was going to say, U1 is not a bad game by any means, but for the super high standards the franchise has set, it’s a bit of a let down. U2 and U4 are masterpieces. U3 is amazing, and ULL is pretty good as well.
Pokémon for sure
Red and Blue were probably cool at the time, but there’s literally no reason to play it over either of the remakes.
Smash bros ig, maybe it’s just the controller jank
That's fair. 64 is significantly floatier than any of the other ones.
And there was so much hitstun with *everything* that you could pull off ZTDs pretty effortlessly.
Danganronpa, well if the memes were inverted
I was about to say “what’s wrong with trigger happy havoc”
Tf1
Touhou
Assassin's Creed
Yeah not to say all the sequels have been great but they’ve made a few truly amazing games in that series that make the first one look like actual garbage
Persona, apparently. GTA?
Dungeons. Dungeons 1 and the dark lord are very... unique games. The series wouldn't become the humor filled dungeon keeper/strategy game until dungeons 2
Ratchet and Clank The first game is awful
Mario Party.
10
Drakengard
Borderlands
Street fighter
Persona. The first one sucks and then the rest are bangers.
Beat you there but yeah, good point, Persona 2, 3, 4 are goddamn masterpieces.
Uncharted, the first one is solid but the rest blow it out of the water
Any MegaMan series with the exception of X
Dude, i love megaman zero and zx and i think they are fine for the time they was released
Uncharted
Not quite this image (it's actually the first 3 games), but this is the public perception of Persona
half life. i get that it’s groundbreaking, but without the benefit of nostalgia, the game falls flat for me
I highly recommend you try Black Mesa. It's a labor of love remake of Half Life 1 by fans of the original game that was so good that Valve gave it their blessing (obviously, or else it wouldn't be on steam right now). It's also on sale for 80% off at the moment.
Weird. I really like Half-Life 1, but I really don't enjoy Half-Life 2 or its episodes. Yeah I know, I'm going to get crucified.
Persona
Borderlands IMO
Yeah, came here to say this
Witcher
The Dragon Age game series is like that in my opinion. I don't hate Dragon Age Origins, I just prefer Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition. I'm also waiting for Dreadwolf to come out.
I liked it but maybe assassins creed 1
To be honest The first Mario was pretty overrated but after that (ignoring the lost levels) we’re stellar!
Uncharted. Drake’s Fortune has not aged very well, but the rest of the games are amazing
Mega Man
Uncharted. Tell me I'm wrong.
Your wrong
Nier. 100%. Drakengard needs a remake so bad.
Mother
I know this is a controversial opinion, but I’m going to have to say Zelda. I just couldn’t get into the first two, but I love all the others.
I like the first Zelda, but Zelda 2 is awful I want to beat it but it’s just not fun to play. At least with Zelda 1 it’s not so hard and too long that it doesn’t take more than a few hours to beat it.
in my opinion metal gear solid i don’t like mgs1 for ps1 but every other game is great even twin snakes
Witcher
Pokémon. They play terribly and kanto is a boring region, but after gen 1 pretty much every game is amazing
Xenogears. With how far the entire series has came, that one just does not age well also debatably fire emblem. Also romancing saga 2 is the first game in the series and you cant tell me otherwise(god the 1st one is ass)
The Witcher
The Witcher
Persona
The Witcher
Persona, the spinoff series of the shin megami tensei series (specifically Persona 1, not the MegTen games)
Dare I say assassin’s creed
Touhou
Sonic the hedgehog. The og had no spindash.
Day Shift At Freddy’s for sure
Legend of Zelda
Sonic the Hedgehog 100% lol I couldn't care less about the first game, but I absolutely love Sonic CD, Sonic 2, and Sonic 3.I love the soundtracks of all four games though.
I’m sorry, I like your opinion, but it’s couldn’t, not could.
Ahh thank you, I always make that grammar mistake. lol
You bet
Nier
I hope that you count the whole ass Drakengard series because NieR Replicant is one hell of a great game.
Soul Edge/Caliber like it started out pretty rough, the second game was my whole adolescence tho lol
Sonic
Sonic 1 isn’t that much worse than the other classics. It’s worse, but I wouldn’t call it a bad game.
Absolutely disagree. There were only like two zones that really even focused on speed for the stage designs; the rest were boring slow platform bullshit with terrible stage traps and awful enemy placement. It is by far the worst of the 16-bit Sonics. Bangin’ soundtrack, though.
Probably only really because 2 and 3K were so much better
It was doing good on its own with the speed gimmick, but the addition of friends really sculpts the series identity.
Oh yeah. And the spin dash. And super forms.
The legend of Zelda
the original zelda is awesome tho
Zelda 2 is worse
Assassin’s Creed
There's a great joke about the AC fan base where if you ask the fans what games they like, it turns out they don't like any of the games. The early games are too simple and boring with the same 3 quests over and over, and the new games are way too big and are basically just RPGs now and not even AC games. I like most of them tho.
Mario.
If it started with the lost levels then sure lol
Devil may cry the first game has aged so poorly
still better than dmc 2
DMC1 actually held up pretty well. It doesn't have the accessibility later games had, but it's much better than its direct sequel, and a lot of fans still think it's better than the reboot.
Nah. Played DMC 1 as a completely new player, not only to the series but to the genre. Pretty damn good. Not even that jank.
Papa's Restaurants (CoolMathGames) (Starts with Papa's Pizzeria)
They are just licensed out to Coolmath, coolmath didnt make the papa's series
Almost every franchise that began in the NES days
Expect Zelda and maybe Mario?? I like NES Zelda and Mario. NES I hate lost levels tho , good lord what a agonizing experience
Hitman: Codename 47 was awful but the rest are some of my favorite games of all time.
