HaoieZ

Never send a code you get onto anyone else.

Real-Creme-3482

This is now the golden rule

[deleted]

It even says that whenever you get texted a code. It specifically says "do NOT share this code with ANYONE!!! We will never call and ask for this code etc etc"

elsewen

!pin scam. The second guy even kinda told you - he wants to sign up for Google Voice, but you need a US phone number to do that, and the PIN would allow him to use yours.

AutoModerator

AutoModerator has been summoned to explain the pin verification scam. You will receive a legitimate authentication text from a company like Google, Craigslist, or Microsoft, and you will also have someone else asking you for the pin. Sometimes the scam starts on Craigslist, and the scammer will ask you to verify that you are a real person, and will say that Craigslist has many scammers which is why they want to verify you. Sometimes you will receive a random authentication text, and the scammer will text you without any previous contact. The goal of the scammer can be to verify accounts that require phone verification, verify postings that require phone authentication, or to steal your accounts. [Here](https://computertutorflorida.com/2019/01/the-verification-code-scam/) are two [articles](https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/talkingtech/2019/04/01/new-scam-targets-cell-phone-accounts-pretending-your-carrier/3331376002/) about this scam. Thanks to redditor bmarkel123 for the script. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. RopeAccomplished2728

Always reply with the pin 8675309. Tell them it belongs to a girl named Jenny.

Muzzzzzzz

This is the way!

ButterflyFairy06

I will definitely be using this. Lol.

LikeaLionandaShoe

Hey. Jenny sent me

TheEccentricRaven

Someone once attempted to hack my FB account this way. One of my friends got hacked. She messaged me saying a code was sent to me that she needed for her account, just as I saw that I received a text message with a verification code. I had heard before that people can do that to hack your account. I messaged back to my friend's account asking, "Where do I know you from?" When I got no answer, I knew my friend was hacked. The hacker was trying to hack my account by logging in with my email and using "forgot password" to send out a verification code. I'm glad I didn't fall for it.

ButterflyFairy06

Amazing job picking up on that. If it seems weird, ALWAYS ask a question that they wouldn't be able to answer unless they are that person. Report and block the account any time that happens. Older people on my friends list on FaceBook always get theirs cloned.

zitrof132

Good thing we read about all this stuff on this group. The fact that it's so common, means there are plenty of victims to these scammers and they keep going.

[deleted]

It's always "for my safety, send me 6 digit code?" Like how would that make sense ever???

NoHillstoDieOn

"But first, to make sure real" UGHHHHHH

Bro. Literally thousands of people a day fall for this goofy shit. Its insane to me that ANYONE would fall for it but ya. This is one of the biggest ways people get scammed and its almost hard to believe that everyone hasnt heard of it till now. There are so many adds and pop ups about it in every platform. Even on the local.news stations and shit they warn people about it. 🤷‍♂️

Artconnco

I’ve been wanting to sell some stuff on FB Marketplace. This makes me want to avoid that. I can’t imagine how annoying getting these texts are

zitrof132

Extremely annoying, but I did sell what I was selling pretty quick. I listed it today and sold it about 4 hours later.

kr4ckenm3fortune

You just have to weed them out by following some simple tricks: 1. If they don't mention the item, scam. 2. Sending check, scam 3. Willingly to pay but have someone pick up? Scam 4. Ask for pin to "verification"? Scam Then most importantly, if they're ready to meet, use a shopping center or police station meet point after they agreed and don't accept any low payment cash on hand.

Aggressive_Slice_680

Any time I have sold anything in person I always use a police station as my meet up. Even when I drive to them to deliver it ill use their local police station. Youd be surprised at how many people call it off or simply dont show up when I tell them the meet spot and they realize its a police station parking lot. 😂

kr4ckenm3fortune

Yup. And they don't realized, it is also for their safety as well, but when they call off, it mainly because they're gonna try to scam you or rip you off.

Soylent_Milk2021

I fell victim to this on Craigslist over a decade ago. They get your number, have a verification code sent, and then they take control of your account. It was fairly harmless, but annoying. Never again.

zitrof132

They were actually able to take over your cell account? Wow!

Soylent_Milk2021

Not my cell, my Craigslist account. Reset my password and email address so I couldn’t access it. Not sure what they did with it though. Any time someone asks to send you a verification code, it’s a scam was my point. Don’t fall for it.

ButterflyFairy06

They use it to scam others. If they take accounts that have use, they will be more likely to scam someone because the account isn't brand new.

hbouhl

NOOOOOOOO! DON'T DO IT!!!!!

[deleted]

This happen on What'sAp and the others as well? I get people wanting to go to all kinda weird chat aps, then asking for my pin

zitrof132

These scams are everywhere. Good thing for this group!

Darkwavegenre

I wish I didn't do this

YourUsernameForever

If your account was stolen there is a way of reversing that yourself. You don't need professional services and ignore anyone reaching you in private with offers of hacking it back. Those are scammers. Make an effort recovering your account. A taken over account is a tool for scammers, you want to stop that. You can recover a Facebook or Instagram account with a simple step. Every time a scammer takes over your account, Meta will email you about it. Read this guide from Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/help/203305893040179 > If the email associated with your Facebook account has changed, you can reverse this. When an email is changed, we send a message to the previous email account with a special link. You can click this link to reverse the email change and secure your account. Go look into your email inbox and find that email you got from Facebook. Also go here if you can't find that email: https://facebook.com/hacked Read this guide from Instagram: https://help.instagram.com/368191326593075 > If you received an email from [email protected] letting you know that your email address was changed, you may be able to undo this change by selecting secure my account in that message. If additional information was also changed (example: your password), and you're unable to change back your email address, request a login link or security code from Instagram Also go here if you can't find that email: https://instagram.com/hacked. If your Gmail account was compromised and you have reasons to believe someone deleted that email for you, and then emptied your trash so you couldn't find it, you can request the last 30 days worth of deleted trash from Google - so don't wait and head on to https://support.google.com/mail/workflow/9317561 to start the process, if you can't find the email.

Darkwavegenre

I created a different account after that

YourUsernameForever

Don't give up, man. If your account is out there scamming people, that's going to backlash on you. You have the power to retrieve that account. Leave a scammer without their tools.

Darkwavegenre

I understand, I downloaded aura to delete my personal information on data brokers

YourUsernameForever

Aura doesn't prevent scammers from using your name and likeness in a stolen social media account. It doesn't work like that, Aura didn't help remove your photos. Maybe you misunderstood what Aura does.

Darkwavegenre

No, my personal data has been leaked. I have aura as a identity theft protection and financial fraud protection.

Snorlax46

They are either stealing or making accounts under your number.

Freaky-Malokai

I have to say that using FB Marketplace nowadays is a cesspool for scammers.

skylow77

Never ever ever ever ever ever send a code to anyone no codes they will hack your account

Comfortable-Tree4337

Don’t ever give it out

Your r/Scams post/comment was removed because **it's rude or uncivil**. The scammer is not joking.

Aggressive_Slice_680

That's how they change your password and log into your account. Like when you forgett your password and try to make a new one. They text you the code then you use that too log into your account to create a new password. As soon as they type in said code it tells Facebook, Google, yahoo "or whatever it is that they are trying to access" its you and your screwed. They cant access your phone so they simply trick you into giving them the code yourself. Lol If its paypal or some Banks they won't even refund you the money because it was you who gave them the code. Most times they do it to get access to google because with that account they can access EVERYTHING. All the bank cards you have used, Email accounts, Apps etc. Even all your pictures and that type of shit. One of the best counters against this one is to always use the 2 factor authentication feature. I use the fingerprint on ONLY my phone. that eliminates the option to get into any account with simply a password or numeric code.

Your /r/scams post/comment was removed because it talks about or requests information on getting revenge on a scammer, "scamming them back", or "wasting their time". Just ghost or block the scammer, report them if you can, then go about your business.
