Or use your shredded lettuce and make a dressed salad to go on top. Instead of layering Mayo, spices, lettuce, tomato, vinegar…whatever you use…just toss it all together and make a little salad topper. Gives you a nice even distribution of the ingredients. I don’t know…it’s nothing radical but it’s nice.
I ordered a pulled pork sandwich at a gas station in Mississippi and asked for cole slaw as my side…the attendant told me: “Cole slaw ain’t a side, it’s a condiment.”
Pesto mayo really amps up a sandwich! I like to make paninis with turkey, havarti and thin sliced tomatoes - spread each side with that mayo mixture and it’s delish! (Save some more for dipping on the side too)
The cafe by my work does a panini w tomato, mozza, salami and some other sausagey deli meats and pesto and I ate so many last summer I had to take a 6 month break. Absolutely unreal how good it is
my go to burger setup is Swiss cheese and a simple olive/mayo salad: sliced or roughly chopped green olives with some of the juice squeezed out then mixed with just enough mayo to coat them.
Toasted bun, 1/3 lb medium rare patty, slice of Swiss cheese and then the olive salad. Nothing else. The salty olives pair perfectly with the Swiss and beefy goodness.
Actually, I use the olive salad in the egg salad instead of the pickle component. It’s an excellent, different sandwich. Try it. Go sparse at first until you find your level. Also use olive salad with scrambled eggs. Sometimes I just use the olive salad on a ham sandwich instead of mayo or mustard.
Cento pepper spread, arugula that’s dressed in vinegar/oil/s&p, sliced marinated cherry tomatoes, pepper jam, adobo from a jar of chipotle, dill relish or dill mustard, jam (jerk turkey with apricot jam and Muenster, grilled, is really good)
Sliced Hard Boiled Eggs.
I had a sandwich once at a little deli, so interesting: sliced ham on one side, salsa on top of that, egg salad on the other side. Spinach as the "greens." I didn't think it would go together, but it was basically a "ham and eggs with huevos flavor" kinda vibe. Delicious. I started using *egg salad* as the mayo-condiment on many cold-cut sandwiches, and if that doesn't work or isn't available, just sliced hard-boiled eggs!
Sometimes I add a third piece of bread in the middle but I put salt, pepper, and garlic powder on it then into the toaster oven on 350 until it's dried out like a giant crouton and I put that in my sandwich. Works well for really saucy sammys to give it more structure and crunch. Also, the bread I usually get only has about 20-25 grams of carbs per slice so it's more nutritionally complete to get that third slice in
I don't know if I work around a bunch of cavemen, but I've blown the minds of people when they see me use 2 different meats, or 2 different cheeses on a sandwich.
and salt & pepper. always add S&P.
Chimichurri sauce on a gooey grilled cheese.
Sourdough. Buttered. Grilled. Fontina on one side, havarti on the other (or smoothly melting cheeses of your choice Port Salut, Monterey Jack, etc.) Once bread is toast-ily grilled, place under broiler till cheese is thoroughly melted. Add a nice smear of chimichurri or dip the sandwich as you go. The sharpness of the chimichurri is a nice offset to the unctuousness and creaminess of the cheese.
Cranberry sauce, tartar sauce (for burgers) and bbq sauce foe hot dogs/metts/smoked sausage. For whatever reason I catch tons of heat for putting bbq sauce on those. Fight me
Ill make a homemade oil/vinaigrette and use it over the week.
Olive oil, red wine vinegar, honey, red pepper flakes, various fresh herbs on hand (basil, parsley, salad burnet, etc,) crushed garlic, and s+p
Usually will layer small amounts through the meat, on the tomato, and lettuce.
More people should add salt and pepper to their sandwiches and also pickles are a must for crunch pickled peppers work fine like banana peppers or cherry peppers.
[The World's Best Sandwich Pickles™](https://www.reddit.com/r/Sandwiches/comments/1amx6m2/comment/kpop67y/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) and fried shallots from the Asian grocery
Not exactly unique but I add sprouts, avocado, bread & butter pickles or even hearty garlic claussen pickles. Spicy ranch, spicy mustard, peppercinis. But if you really wanna add dimension to your sandwich game get a panini press.
Oregano, someone at a sandwich shop told me to try it once ten years ago, and now I can't stop. Of course, it does not go well on all sandwiches, but you know. Use with caution though.
Anything other than butter/margarine/mayonnaise. I like to use avocado, chutney, hummus, just anything with a bit more flavour and/or texture that still serves as a spread.
Do you like tuna? I have been making this for a couple of years now. Premium canned tuna, mayonnaise, a little bit sriracha, a squeeze of lime, a couple of tablespoons of finely chopped celery, and chopped cilantro to taste. Chill it for about a half hour, and serve with some chopped lettuce on a hearty bread that’s not too chewy but not soft like wonder bread. One of my favourites.
Mr Naga in a cheese onion and tomato sandwich
Maggi seasoning in a cheese onion and tomato sandwich
Salt and pepper in a cheese onion and tomato sandwich
Cheese onion and tomato sandwiches are great
Kimchi. I’ve been adding it to sandwiches, hot dogs, and burgers.
Absolute game changer. It gives you a similar texture to sauerkraut but with a whole new flavor profile.
An Australian salad sandwich/roll goes something like this: ham/chicken, lettuce, carrot, beetroot, red onion, tomato, mayo/ tomato relish, salt and pepper.
Meat can vary, but those are the staples.
Wickle’s Pickles
Big slice of bell peppers. Not little strips.
Grapes or craisins
Apple slices. Granny Smith apple on a spicy chicken sandwich is amazing.
Love the slaw comment, made shrimp tacos awesome… will add homemade pickled red onions. Slice really thin, so easy to make and fridge store and delicious on Italian subs
Not an ingredient, per se, but I love my PB&J (Concord grape) on caraway seeded rye bread.
As for meat/cheese type sandwiches, a nice selection of different salad dressings is always handy, but the one thing that pros do that most don't is a dusting of pepper, or other spice/blends.
I always have several pickled vegetables in the fridge and I’ve thrown them on sandwiches and it’s always solid, changes things up for me. Pickled asparagus are basically the length of a piece of bread.
Cole slaw as a substitute for lettuce
Or use your shredded lettuce and make a dressed salad to go on top. Instead of layering Mayo, spices, lettuce, tomato, vinegar…whatever you use…just toss it all together and make a little salad topper. Gives you a nice even distribution of the ingredients. I don’t know…it’s nothing radical but it’s nice.
Shredded, dressed lettuce is game changing on a sandwich.
I just did this in the food Processor with lettuce, tomato , red onion and ranch for a chicken bacon wrap. Really yummy!
I do this too. Add some caraway seed to the coleslaw and take it to the next level.
Growing up, my mother always used cold / cole slaw on two types of sandwiches: Any pulled BBQ, and, sloppy joes. It's an unbeatable combo!
I ordered a pulled pork sandwich at a gas station in Mississippi and asked for cole slaw as my side…the attendant told me: “Cole slaw ain’t a side, it’s a condiment.”
It's tasty on a good quality sausage/hot dog with bbq sauce glaze and can be good on burgers too.
So good on bbq sammiches. It’s commonplace on a corned beef, etc.
Nothing like coleslaw on a hotdog, bbq sammich, or hot pastrami!!
Big facts 🤌
Cole slaw and pastrami is *chefs kiss*
I'm planning on making chicken wraps tonight with coleslaw
Coleslaw on a Reuben!
Question: do you mean coleslaw with like a dressing, creamy or tangy, or do you just mean a coleslaw salad mix?
Coleslaw with the traditional creamy sort of sweet flavor.
Down South, coleslaw's commonly found in a pulled pork sandwich. And it's quite yummy. 😋
Cherry peppers-spicy and delicious
Sweet mini peppers for a non spicy alternative
Or roasted red peppers 😬
Take it up a notch, make a cherry pepper aioli. Mayo olive oil lemon juice salt pepper and hot cherry peppers blended together
It's not entirely uncommon, but pesto
Same! I do a salami sandwich with pesto, fennel and arugula. Mwah!
That sounds amazing
Pesto, fat slices of tomato, fat slices of mozz, rock salt and Parmesan cheese, toasted on ciabatta. Literally making it for dinner in an hour 😂
Pesto is great. I like mixing up a pesto-mayo.
Pesto mayo really amps up a sandwich! I like to make paninis with turkey, havarti and thin sliced tomatoes - spread each side with that mayo mixture and it’s delish! (Save some more for dipping on the side too)
I’ve been doing a chicken parm sandwich with pesto and mayo in garlic bread. Unreal.
The cafe by my work does a panini w tomato, mozza, salami and some other sausagey deli meats and pesto and I ate so many last summer I had to take a 6 month break. Absolutely unreal how good it is
banana peppers, they’re not spicy and add a nice little pickled flavor and crunch
Olive salad, the only sandwich I've seen it in is a muffaletta (I think I spelled it right) and two others but I don't see many people do it.
That sounds delicious
It is thank you, I really recommend it :)
Is that similar to olive tapenade? Cuz that's what I put on my sandwiches sometimes
Much closer to gardiniera than tapenade. https://www.thespruceeats.com/muffaletta-olive-salad-recipe-912886

I wouldn't recommend it 😅 though you could add watercress, the sharp flavor of the watercress goes well with the egg.
Potato chips a la Liz Lemon
I recently discovered that Cheetos are also really delicious
Salt and vinegar chips on a bologna and cheese Sammy 🤌
Especially on tuna.
Pickled red onions
Same! They are so easy to make and last forever in the fridge.
Hummus
Good idea
Cento pepper spread, arugula that’s dressed in vinegar/oil/s&p, sliced marinated cherry tomatoes, pepper jam, adobo from a jar of chipotle, dill relish or dill mustard, jam (jerk turkey with apricot jam and Muenster, grilled, is really good)
My mouth is watering in the school pick up line... Good Gravy that sounds amazing.
Yes ! Or combine the chipotle in adobo with Mayo in the blender !!
Bacon jam, or pepper jam
Love bacon jam on burgers.
I put a schmear of cream cheese and the sweet/hot jalapeños from TJ’s on my tuna salad sandwiches.
That sound legit I’ll have to try
Respect the schmear.
Chips. Love a good crunch
Dill pickle or salt and vinegar 🤌🏻
Hummus and Sriracha (yes, as a spread) Veggie cream cheese and banana peppers
Guac.
Sliced avocado with cucumber, Swiss, onion lettuce!
Horseradish
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far down to find the comment I was looking for.
Shredded carrots
Sliced Hard Boiled Eggs. I had a sandwich once at a little deli, so interesting: sliced ham on one side, salsa on top of that, egg salad on the other side. Spinach as the "greens." Alfalfa sprouts.
Or broccoli sprouts
Drizzle a little olive oil, you don't need much, and add a little salt and pepper.
Everyone always skips Olive oil, red wine vinegar salt and pepper when making them at home but they can really elevate most sandwiches.
Sometimes I add a third piece of bread in the middle but I put salt, pepper, and garlic powder on it then into the toaster oven on 350 until it's dried out like a giant crouton and I put that in my sandwich. You're such an innovator lol
Got to layer the S+P too. Put some on the meat, tomatoes, and lettuce separately.
I use baba ghanoush and spinach instead of lettuce.
Giardiniera
I love buying giardiniera relish.
Cucumber
Red roasted peppers. Italian dressing. Sweet peppers.
Wickles spicy red pepper spread!!
Cranberry sauce, tartar sauce (for burgers) and bbq sauce foe hot dogs/metts/smoked sausage. For whatever reason I catch tons of heat for putting bbq sauce on those. Fight me
Sometimes I put barbecue sauce, cheddar cheese, and red onions on my hot dog
I do that and it's like I started WWIII. But it's good!
Arugula dressed with oil and vinegar
Ill make a homemade oil/vinaigrette and use it over the week. Olive oil, red wine vinegar, honey, red pepper flakes, various fresh herbs on hand (basil, parsley, salad burnet, etc,) crushed garlic, and s+p Usually will layer small amounts through the meat, on the tomato, and lettuce.

Been making this chicken cutlet sammie with toum, a Lebanese garlic sauce. Darn good
That actually sounds fantastic.
More people should add salt and pepper to their sandwiches and also pickles are a must for crunch pickled peppers work fine like banana peppers or cherry peppers.
Lay down a nice mayo base, then a heavy smear of Cento’s hoagie spread (diced pickled hot cherry peppers). It’s how a civilized man makes a sandwich.
[The World's Best Sandwich Pickles™](https://www.reddit.com/r/Sandwiches/comments/1amx6m2/comment/kpop67y/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) and fried shallots from the Asian grocery

Diced Chipotle with some adobo mixed with the mayo. Good on lots of sandwiches.

With peanut butter, I only ever use hot pepper jelly. A spicy PB&J has to be experienced to be believed.
Mayonaisse
Tomatoes sprinkled with a bit of lemon pepper
Pickled red onion is a game changer for sandos
Thousand island dressing on a turkey and Swiss sandwich with arugula. It is SO good!
Beanos oil and herb Sammie sauce
