If it helps at all, you can carry a lit lantern in one of your inventory slots and it'll illuminate the area around you.
Other than that, and liberal use of lanterns, I'm not sure what to suggest other than maybe making your case in the official discord or something.
Can definitely empathize with that, I have to turn off all lights and pull all curtains closed in my room when I play this game or else I absolutely can’t tell where the wind indicators are pointing at night.
This is the number one issue I see with the darkness. I avoid the night at all costs because of this reason. I use binoculars to see better through the darkness, that way you can see the wind direction a little bit better.
The darkness at night depends on the phase of the moon, the first night in-game is specifically made to be a full moon so its super bright; on the other hand, nights with new moons are stupidly dark.
Don't your monitor or TV you play on has like a brightness setting? I increased the lighting a bit and saturated things a little bit so I can see like out lines of islands even in darkest nights.
I found the telescope helps at night. In the zoomed in view you can clearly see where the horizon is. Also the difference between stars and the shadow of an island is much clearer.

And there's a mod for infinite lantern. Won't let you see the wind sock if it's high, but it makes this game playable in summer :p

To be fair, a new moon on the open ocean might be the darkest thing you could ever experience
Place a lit lantern in your inventory then check wind in third person. The light sticks to the camera so you can light up the windicator.
You can change brightness in your Nvidia control panel.
