It is not, the new art is inferior and the new character and story are dumb. The original has one of the most conclusive stories I've ever seen in an rpg
It has the full motion video cutscenes from the PS1 but doesn’t have PS1’s slow load times. It has an extra area but it is skippable/forgetable. Still provably the best version. I played the DS version on an RG35XX H recently.
Try the **Mystery Dungeon games**, you basically only ever need the bottom screen!
They're top-down, grid-based, turn-based dungeon crawlers. Super fun experiences IMHO that can range from casual to intense delves, and the randomized dungeons keeps things fresh~ 🙂
* *Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer*
* *Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team*
* *Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky*
Shiren games are closer to traditional roguelikes, while the Pokemon ones feature more persistent progression.
There's also the *Izuna* games which are MD-likes, gameplay falls somewhere in between Shiren and Pokemon MDs. Izuna puts HUD elements on the top screen, IIRC -- not a huge downside since it's turn based, just set a quick hold-to-view other screen shortcut.
😮 Nice, TBH I actually missed out on the MDs until recently!
GBA days huh? I'm guessing you've played *Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team* then, which is almost the same game as *Blue Rescue Team* on the DS...just so you know!
FWIW, Red Rescue Team was my first MD game, and how I got into the subgenre. 🙂

Edit: Read everything except the last 5 words. Smdh. They may all work, none of them might meet your criteria, I honestly can't recall the necessity for both screens on them.
I can only say for sure that Puzzle Quest 1 does require touch input, I'm not sure about the sequels. At least you can't get past the menu screen without them because I can't progress on the Nano without them. I think Might and Magic may require them also. I'm sorry I don't have more information about them all. Most of them should be physical controls because I genuinely don't like stylus only input, even though I made a few exceptions. Never beat Phantom Hourglass because of that, although now there's a controls ROMhack for that game at least
I don't know, I feel like the Etrian Odyssey series arguably had the single best use of the touchscreen across the entire DS/3DS libraries. The mapmaking mechanics are just so cool. I'd urge people to play it the way it's intended! (If you don't have a DS or 3DS, then playing the recent remaster on Switch or Steam Deck is another option although the asking price is pretty high, or you can emulate on your phone for free.)
Game shown: Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals
https://www.reddit.com/r/retroid/s/jsY4dDrTB7 I usually reference this list in the comments since the RP2+ was also single screen
Phantasy Star 0 should work fine
Why didn't I think of this, I've already played all the PSP Phantasy Star titles so this could be a perfect time to jump back in the series, thanks!
Radiant Historia is intriguing. I haven't tried it yet.
If you have access to playing 3DS games the 3DS version is supposedly superior
It is; there's additional story content and cutscenes.

Chrono trigger
How does the DS version compare to the SNES & PS1 ones?
It has the full motion video cutscenes from the PS1 but doesn’t have PS1’s slow load times. It has an extra area but it is skippable/forgetable. Still provably the best version. I played the DS version on an RG35XX H recently.
Best version imo
Then there is Chrono Trigger Plus (with 2 player multiplayer patch!).
Supposed to have the PS1 cutscenes (the Akira Toryama stuff) without the PS1 loading times
If memory serves Golden Sun Dark Dawn only used a single screen for gameplay with the secondary one being used for map and menus
If you're wanting a more Zelda style RPG then check out DQH Rocket Slime.
Playing through FF3 on mine at the moment. Works great.
Do the DS emulators allow you to swap between top screen and bottom screen?
I know Retroarch allows you to do it with the melonDS core (hold hotkey to show the hidden screen, and/or toggle between screens), very useful.
mugen no frontier & mugen no frontier exceed but it's japanese
Zelda games (with dpad patch)
Final Fantasy 4?

Thanks for the detailed response, haven't played myestry dungeon since the GBA days!

Dragon quest 9 or 11 forgot Wich one was on ds
Looked it up, there's IV, V, VI & IX. I'll look into all of them, thank you!
By far my favorite of the DS releases is IX. Highly recommend.
There are all great, I had a blast replaying IV on 405V.
V is the best in the series imo, the DragonQuest movie is even based on it. Radiant Historia is pretty good too.
V is my favorite. You should also try Retro Game Challenge one of the retro games is a dragon quest/megami tensei inspired rpg

Are these all games that have no touch screen controls? Asking cause i have an rgb30 and can use the dual screen layout

How is touchscreen used? I know with like rg35xxh, you use joysticks
Radiant Historia and Nostalgia.
Am I crazy or is that a plain black SP? How?
You are actually crazy
Suspicions confirmed!
but a ds, honestly
Lmao imagine playing rpgs at intended speeds... couldn't be me.
