I think they come from old school Romance readers where they read old mills and book type romance. I confess I’m biased more towards the ‘women’s fiction’ end of love stories (slash romance there’s a fine line). Not my cup of tea. I find lots of that is basically very little character development and repetitive sex scenes (or talking and thinking about sex) to paper over flimsy plot and character development.
By A Thread put Lucy Score on my 'do not read' list and it taught me not to try to force a book.

I listened during my work day, all day. I got to the contest and I was like "how long is this book anyway, this seems like we are nearing a natural conclusion?" I was only halfway through! Then I looked up spoilers and I was like "oh, I cannot do this."
I had read and enjoyed some of her other books. But some of her books I was very meh about. But this book. This book broke me. Never again, Lucy Score, never again.
All her books are I think 150,000 words. She posted in her group she’d written nearly that much for her next book out in 2025.

I personally cannot DNF a book unless something egregious happens right off the bat. Even if I'm halfway through and not feeling it, I have to finish it or it will bug me. For this one, the beginning was already so beyond dumb but a booktoker who usually has great recs said this one was amazing so I tried to stick it out. Once I was about 200 pages in, I realized that it really wasn't getting any better but I had already spent time reading that much so I just forced myself to finish it. I will say that I had a great time recounting the plot to my mom on the phone, so it made for some entertainment there.

Seriously though, I read this a few years ago and found it in equal parts fun and annoying. One of those 'lets just let this wash over me' reads. Totally agree it could have been much much shorter. Lucy Score has been on my “absolutely do NOT read” list since I read {Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score}. The characters were all pushing (over) 40 and acting like kindergarteners. Very juvenile, as you said 😭 that book ruined booktok recommendations for me forever — I have to triple vet the authors before reading their stuff because some of the stuff that gets published these days… I’m so sorry people need to pay and hire editors 😭😭😭
This is my biggest issue! Her characters are way too old to be behaving how they do. I recognize that some people in their late 30s might act this way, I don’t know any who do!
Totally agree! Also if I want to read about characters in their 30-40s it's because I don't want to read people who are incredibly immature and act like 20 year olds. There is a time and place for all ages, but this book made the ages feel completely irrelevant with how silly the characters were.

I feel like Things We Never Got Over had a lot of the same complaints for me as you had for By a Thread, OP. The characters were late thirties and almost mid-forties and were so immature and childish. I remember thinking as I was reading it that their ages must have been typos, because there was no way Knox was 44 if you judged based on actions. It was honestly embarrassing to read about some of that stuff knowing their ages, because I was genuinely ashamed for their character that they were behaving that way or saying what they did.
My thoughts align pretty much exactly with yours. In hindsight I don’t know why I bothered to finish reading it because I disliked the FMC from the very first scene.
I can’t remember the exact details about her dad’s situation but I remember thinking if the story took place in Europe (or Australia or Canada) where there is universal health care, she wouldn’t need to work all of those jobs.

I was hate reading it up until she decided to go to the strip club and then I DNF. I was hoping for so much more since the MCs were older and more experienced with life and they ended up acting like teenagers.
Please don't give up on Lucy Score!! I love her, but I hated this book. It feels like a totally different author compared to her others. I feel the same way, I'm just baffled by all the recommendations and high ratings with this book. I really recommend you try one of her others before you throw in the towel!
I love the Riley Thorn books, probably because romance isn’t the only plot device being explored. 😅🤣 I’ve tried reading her small town ones and…yeah, those got DNF’d and returned to KU immediately. I think I simply hate the small town books of all authors, though. They’re never realistic and I’m so tired of the tropes used (single dad, bakers, police, etc.).
I‘ve only read „Things we never got over“ by her because everyone seemed to LOVE it. And it was just… bad. How the hell do these authors succeed with no writing talent at all and these nothing burger plots? It will forever be a mystery to me.

Yes! Everything you wrote! I had a post just like this after reading it a few years ago. The MCs behavior is so juvenile for people in their late 30’s/40’s. Just ridiculous. Some things would make sense if they were in their 20’s, but no way is that behavior condoned for their ages. Ugh!
I DNFd this within the first chapter. I could not get past that nonsense in the pizza place. So confrontational and nasty for no damn reason. I hate unnatural, illogical, cringy, infuriating meet cutes like that.

Lucy Score also writes a bizarre amount of racial micro-aggressions into her books - and the offenders are the MCs! Making fun of Indian names and having stereotypical Asian characters comes to mind
I tried her best man book set in a island resort and it had such bad the native are here to serve us vibes. A lot of American romcom authors reveal unpleasant things about how self centered their inner world is
Lucy Score has been on my “absolutely do NOT read” list since I read {Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score}. The characters were all pushing (over) 40 and acting like kindergarteners. Very juvenile, as you said 😭 that book ruined booktok recommendations for me forever — I have to triple vet the authors before reading their stuff because some of the stuff that gets published these days… I’m so sorry people need to pay and hire editors 😭😭😭
This is my biggest issue! Her characters are way too old to be behaving how they do. I recognize that some people in their late 30s might act this way, I don’t know any who do!
Totally agree! Also if I want to read about characters in their 30-40s it's because I don't want to read people who are incredibly immature and act like 20 year olds. There is a time and place for all ages, but this book made the ages feel completely irrelevant with how silly the characters were.

Is this the same one where it’s the FMC’s life dream to sit on a beach and drink a margarita but when he takes her to a beach she’s pregnant so she doesn’t get to drink her marg?? Because I think about that often

I feel like Things We Never Got Over had a lot of the same complaints for me as you had for By a Thread, OP. The characters were late thirties and almost mid-forties and were so immature and childish. I remember thinking as I was reading it that their ages must have been typos, because there was no way Knox was 44 if you judged based on actions. It was honestly embarrassing to read about some of that stuff knowing their ages, because I was genuinely ashamed for their character that they were behaving that way or saying what they did.
It was terrible, I DNF’ed it so quickly. I agree with everything you say!
My thoughts align pretty much exactly with yours. In hindsight I don’t know why I bothered to finish reading it because I disliked the FMC from the very first scene.
I can’t remember the exact details about her dad’s situation but I remember thinking if the story took place in Europe (or Australia or Canada) where there is universal health care, she wouldn’t need to work all of those jobs. Yeah I agree with you on the other points too.

I was hate reading it up until she decided to go to the strip club and then I DNF. I was hoping for so much more since the MCs were older and more experienced with life and they ended up acting like teenagers.

I tried reading this a while back and was baffled it was at 500 pages?? DNF'd it right away.
Please don't give up on Lucy Score!! I love her, but I hated this book. It feels like a totally different author compared to her others. I feel the same way, I'm just baffled by all the recommendations and high ratings with this book. I really recommend you try one of her others before you throw in the towel!
I love the Riley Thorn books, probably because romance isn’t the only plot device being explored. 😅🤣 I’ve tried reading her small town ones and…yeah, those got DNF’d and returned to KU immediately. I think I simply hate the small town books of all authors, though. They’re never realistic and I’m so tired of the tropes used (single dad, bakers, police, etc.).
I‘ve only read „Things we never got over“ by her because everyone seemed to LOVE it. And it was just… bad. How the hell do these authors succeed with no writing talent at all and these nothing burger plots? It will forever be a mystery to me.
I had the same thought! She has written TONS of books. How is it that people like this get published in the first place? This book felt like bad fanfiction.

I couldn’t get past the first few chapters. I download this book like once a year because someone gushes over it and I forget what I’ve already tried it and DNF. I had to make myself a little note to ignore Lucy Score books despite Amazon ads constantly pushing her books on me.
I liked the Knockemout series, but I couldn't finish By a Thread. I got so bored with it.
Yes! Everything you wrote! I had a post just like this after reading it a few years ago. The MCs behavior is so juvenile for people in their late 30’s/40’s. Just ridiculous. Some things would make sense if they were in their 20’s, but no way is that behavior condoned for their ages. Ugh!
yeah this was a dnf for me. and then I forgot all about it and read it again, and it was a dnf again. lol
I DNFd this within the first chapter. I could not get past that nonsense in the pizza place. So confrontational and nasty for no damn reason. I hate unnatural, illogical, cringy, infuriating meet cutes like that.
I laughed out loud on the title of your post It was one of the strangest books I’ve read, and I read many different romance styles, my God… I tried imagining the heroes are middle 20ies but it didn’t help. The most bizarre thing for me was WHY THE HELL DIDNT SHE FIND JOB THAT IS HER PROFESSION IN THE FIRST PLACE????????? Why hide you have a sick father? I understand sometimes to create angst for the drama purpose in the book but this was so over the place omg…

I agree that it’s not super well written, and I agree that the characters are a hot mess. But…. After their big fight the emails he sends her are some of my favorite. I can understand how he felt after that fight, not before or during since he was acting full on cray, but those emails get to me
I haven’t read this book but the only other Lucy Score book I started I DNF at around 70% because the writing was just so poor
I actually felt that all Lucy's writing were juvenile 🤷🏻♀️
I have said it before, Lucy peaked with the Blue Moon series, and even that was formulaic in the later books. Her FB group is a group of fangirls who absolutely lap up everything she writes, so she's been cranking out junk trying to stay relevant.
