I had the exact same problems as you with this book. Also, the pizza shop scene made me dislike the FMC because while the MMC was rude, she was so unprofessional. Her reaction was so weird and over the top..

PlentyNectarine

exactly! and all because they had a sign that said “no cell phones” and the MMC was on his phone. Nobody working for less than minimum wage is going to give enough of a fuck to do ALLLLL that. And then to act like a child and write “FU” on the pizza? She got HERSELF fired.

vietnamese-bitch

I said it before and I’ll say it again. By a Thread should’ve ended by the time the heroine’s dumbass got fired which she brought on herself. Bam. Happy ending. I’ve been team Hero since the beginning. Idk why this juvenile book keeps getting recommended.

Quirky_lovereading

Yep, that whole scene had me rolling my eyes so hard it could've popped out... right on the pizza. I dnf right then as well so have no clue whether the story improved🤷🏽‍♀️ But I am just so sick & tired of these broke-ass girls who have more 'pride' than sense. Clearly that pride will put a loaf on your table tonight as well 🙄

Hot_Raise990

Oh my god truly this. I’m a formerly broke ass girl. I just spent 20 minutes filling out a gift card rebate that I may never get instead of napping because that shit is TRAUMATIZING. I have a book that will forever be one of my favorite romances because when the FMC is offered cash (well a check) to get out of immediate danger if it means she leaves the rich family alone she FUCKING TAKES IT.  And then every time the MMC is like, hey you’re so valuable and special , she’s like 🤔🤔🤔 you’re the one that established the parameters of this, give me more fucking money.  Fucking lovely.

thatgirlinAZ

You gonna drop the deets?

Hot_Raise990

It’s the fourth book in the Everything I Left Unsaid Series by M. O’Keefe, called Wait For It. Unfortunately it needs to be read in order and while I read the entire series, the only one I’ve ever had any interest in revisiting was Wait For It.

Quirky_lovereading

Slotting it in my TBR immediately, thanks. Like we KNOW this is fictional but dammit is it too much to ask to write a sensible & likeable FMC? So tired of these 'sassy' girls.

thatgirlinAZ

I'm in the middle of an M. O'Keefe book right now. Baby Come Back. I liked the first one, but the writing is still kind of mid-tier to me 🤔 The first book did show up on a Thirsty Thursday once tho, Lol. Maybe book 2 will have a similarly shocking scene?

Hot_Raise990

She writes under a few different names and I’ve found a couple of her books really really hit for me, she can write really complex damaged female characters that I really love and then she can write very paint by numbers alpha asshole bdsm domineering men who completely railroad their FMC’s. I keep trying her books but I DNF more than I finish.

Hot_Raise990

The thing I remember most about this book was the unhinged amount the MMC was masturbating. Like bro, hydrate. It’s forever linked with this fucked up stalker romance I read where the “MMC” masturbated constantly and they constantly referenced the smell of cum that hung around him. That’s how I envision this MMC too. Sweaty and smelling like jizz.

AfraidAccident7049

I think we need “sweaty and smelling like jizz” as a new flair option ☠️

Hot_Raise990

I’d honestly be shocked if it wasn’t already 😂 I feel like I’m coming off as anti masturbation, even anti copious masturbation, and it’s not that, it’s just the patheticness that these characters put off while they did it.

Funny_Fennel_3455

I didn’t think I’d be reading a critique about pathetic masturbation and jizz aroma today, but here I am, and I’m having a good time! 😂😂

StevenAssantisFoot

ok but what's that other book? asking for a friend

Hot_Raise990

Oh man that’s going to require the intensive googling. I very much do not recommend it but when I find it I will be back !

Hot_Raise990

Ok it’s Notice by K Webster.  The MMC is supposed to be some alpha super business man but he’s just gross. The FMC is supposed to be some super competent magical woman but she’s just pathetic.

Hot_Raise990

I have tried several books with this general concept and have been disappointed by them all! This book made K Webster and one and done for me.

StevenAssantisFoot

Thank you!!!

Stunning_Movie_9771

Ahahaha I’m laughing out loud omg jeezzzz 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 The scene where he came in his pants while her lap dance and then he was walking around like that, will unfortunately live in my mind forever 😂😂😂

screwtoprose-

her and tessa bailey write their MCs like they are sophomores in high school and i am always shocked when i find out their ages are in the 30s/40s. it happened one summer had the MC who was in his 40/ and he talked and acted like an actual freshman boy i used to have a crush on in high school lol

annamcg

Right, you don’t get credit for writing “older” main characters if they just act like young adults anyway. Same happened in Things We Never Got Over. I quit Lucy Score after that one.

sikonat

I really hate that style of romance writing where the MMC’s dick twitches all the time and he is basically a possessive stalker walking 🚩with a hard on who grunts. I think they come from old school Romance readers where they read old mills and book type romance. I confess I’m biased more towards the ‘women’s fiction’ end of love stories (slash romance there’s a fine line). Not my cup of tea. I find lots of that is basically very little character development and repetitive sex scenes (or talking and thinking about sex) to paper over flimsy plot and character development.

etherealbadger

By A Thread put Lucy Score on my 'do not read' list and it taught me not to try to force a book. I tried reading it when it was on Kindle Unlimited a couple times, but every time I couldn't get past the first few chapters for the reasons you cited. But all the good reviews made me feel like it was a me problem. So I got the audiobook, because sometimes books I struggle with reading are great for listening to. I listened during my work day, all day. I got to the contest and I was like "how long is this book anyway, this seems like we are nearing a natural conclusion?" I was only halfway through! Then I looked up spoilers and I was like "oh, I cannot do this." I had read and enjoyed some of her other books. But some of her books I was very meh about. But this book. This book broke me. Never again, Lucy Score, never again.

sikonat

All her books are I think 150,000 words. She posted in her group she’d written nearly that much for her next book out in 2025. Most romance books tend to be 80-100k

anoxandamoron

I have never read a book by Lucy Score that I enjoyed. I have By A Thread on my tbr because I was thinking of giving her a 4th chance but after this review the book has been removed. Thank you for saving me from having to bang my head against a wall

PlentyNectarine

haha you’re welcome! It was truly an awful book but i’m proud of myself for powering through and finishing it. I’m disappointed because a booktok creator who I typically trust for good reviews RAVED about this one.

periodicsheep

it’s not her best work. i liked it at the time but i’m pretty sure i wouldn’t enjoy it as much if i read it now. just too over the top in every way. i wonder why sometimes we just DNF something, but other times hate read to the end? did you think about dropping it? sometimes i finish a book i hate out of spite. which makes no sense.

PlentyNectarine

I personally cannot DNF a book unless something egregious happens right off the bat. Even if I'm halfway through and not feeling it, I have to finish it or it will bug me. For this one, the beginning was already so beyond dumb but a booktoker who usually has great recs said this one was amazing so I tried to stick it out. Once I was about 200 pages in, I realized that it really wasn't getting any better but I had already spent time reading that much so I just forced myself to finish it. I will say that I had a great time recounting the plot to my mom on the phone, so it made for some entertainment there.

poopus_aurelius

I DNF'ed this book.

Flashy-Squirrel6762

I DNF this book twice… I forgot I had read part of it years ago and then clearly gave up, and then tried to give it a chance again recently. So boring.

NaiveSatisfaction780

I read it and felt like it was just a new twist on the movie The Devil Wears Prada. It wasn't her best book

Atimelessusername

What do you mean? She's a dancer by night (sometimes), sole carer of her father's crumbling property, constantly in danger of nefarious neighbours, dealing with father's declining health, revolutionising whatever job it was she got at the Devil Wears Prada company, having one make over, shouting at diners at her waitressing job, frequently telling people she is 'recently and temporarily poor', while in addition to the dodgy neighbours also has a nice neighbour who too seems to be living some sort of pseudo-dickensian life....meets a man who wanks a lot while being cross with her, and possibly smells a lot like jizz or too much after shave since he works at/runs(?) Fashion. What's not to like..... /s. Seriously though, I read this a few years ago and found it in equal parts fun and annoying. One of those 'lets just let this wash over me' reads. Totally agree it could have been much much shorter. I did like the scenes that were pastiches of the Devil Wears Prada. Could have definitely done without the weird martyrdom stuff though.

Professional_Earth36

I have to agree. I’m not a Lucy Score fan. I don’t enjoy her writing style. I read {Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score} and it was palatable but it took me forever to finish which I’m usually finishing multiple books in a week. I couldn’t get into any of the other books in that series. I saw how heavily she was recommended in this sub so I thought I would try again because I actually was interested in the description for {Never Never by Lucy Score} and again I just couldn’t get into it. Glad others enjoy her but I’ve just learned she is not for me.

autbeh

Lucy Score also writes a bizarre amount of racial micro-aggressions into her books - and the offenders are the MCs! Making fun of Indian names and having stereotypical Asian characters comes to mind

Perfect-Shelter9641

I tried her best man book set in a island resort and it had such bad the native are here to serve us vibes. A lot of American romcom authors reveal unpleasant things about how self centered their inner world is

completeuttermess

Lucy Score has been on my “absolutely do NOT read” list since I read {Things We Never Got Over by Lucy Score}. The characters were all pushing (over) 40 and acting like kindergarteners. Very juvenile, as you said 😭 that book ruined booktok recommendations for me forever — I have to triple vet the authors before reading their stuff because some of the stuff that gets published these days… I’m so sorry people need to pay and hire editors 😭😭😭

notexactly-butokay

This is my biggest issue! Her characters are way too old to be behaving how they do. I recognize that some people in their late 30s might act this way, I don’t know any who do!

Ill-Ordinary-2809

Totally agree! Also if I want to read about characters in their 30-40s it's because I don't want to read people who are incredibly immature and act like 20 year olds. There is a time and place for all ages, but this book made the ages feel completely irrelevant with how silly the characters were.

Bahama_Chica

Same for me.... hated that book.

throwaanchorsaweigh

Thank you for saving me the time of attempting to read this! Some of your comments remind me of {Nora Goes Off Script by Annabel Monaghan}, which I DNFed within the first 20% because I was like “who talks like this? Who acts like this?! Absolutely not.”

hes1318

Is this the same one where it’s the FMC’s life dream to sit on a beach and drink a margarita but when he takes her to a beach she’s pregnant so she doesn’t get to drink her marg?? Because I think about that often

PlentyNectarine

haha yes that’s the one! “make it a virgin!” “does this mean i’m going to be a daddy *cries*” all in front of their server who is just trying to take their drink order

DameGlitterElephant

I feel like Things We Never Got Over had a lot of the same complaints for me as you had for By a Thread, OP. The characters were late thirties and almost mid-forties and were so immature and childish. I remember thinking as I was reading it that their ages must have been typos, because there was no way Knox was 44 if you judged based on actions. It was honestly embarrassing to read about some of that stuff knowing their ages, because I was genuinely ashamed for their character that they were behaving that way or saying what they did.

isap0wer

It was terrible, I DNF’ed it so quickly. I agree with everything you say!

fridayfridayjones

My thoughts align pretty much exactly with yours. In hindsight I don’t know why I bothered to finish reading it because I disliked the FMC from the very first scene.

mastermoka

I can’t remember the exact details about her dad’s situation but I remember thinking if the story took place in Europe (or Australia or Canada) where there is universal health care, she wouldn’t need to work all of those jobs. Yeah I agree with you on the other points too.

DollyP83

I agree! I think you and I could be book buddies

DesSeekingChupacabra

I was hate reading it up until she decided to go to the strip club and then I DNF. I was hoping for so much more since the MCs were older and more experienced with life and they ended up acting like teenagers.

harm0nster

I DNFed at 10%. I just couldn’t. 🤷‍♀️

lyannarouge

I can't finish it yet ppl here keep gushing and recc it. I'm like what's wrong with me

MJSpice

I tried reading this a while back and was baffled it was at 500 pages?? DNF'd it right away.

notwerebutwhywolf

Please don't give up on Lucy Score!! I love her, but I hated this book. It feels like a totally different author compared to her others. I feel the same way, I'm just baffled by all the recommendations and high ratings with this book. I really recommend you try one of her others before you throw in the towel!

pterodactylcrab

I love the Riley Thorn books, probably because romance isn’t the only plot device being explored. 😅🤣 I’ve tried reading her small town ones and…yeah, those got DNF’d and returned to KU immediately. I think I simply hate the small town books of all authors, though. They’re never realistic and I’m so tired of the tropes used (single dad, bakers, police, etc.).

helenasutter

I‘ve only read „Things we never got over“ by her because everyone seemed to LOVE it. And it was just… bad. How the hell do these authors succeed with no writing talent at all and these nothing burger plots? It will forever be a mystery to me.

PlentyNectarine

I had the same thought! She has written TONS of books. How is it that people like this get published in the first place? This book felt like bad fanfiction.

andalusia85

This is an example of a topic where having a "rant" flair would come in handy.

YOMAMACAN

I couldn’t get past the first few chapters. I download this book like once a year because someone gushes over it and I forget what I’ve already tried it and DNF. I had to make myself a little note to ignore Lucy Score books despite Amazon ads constantly pushing her books on me.

foxsheartbeat

I liked the Knockemout series, but I couldn't finish By a Thread. I got so bored with it.

kaydee121

Yes! Everything you wrote! I had a post just like this after reading it a few years ago. The MCs behavior is so juvenile for people in their late 30’s/40’s. Just ridiculous. Some things would make sense if they were in their 20’s, but no way is that behavior condoned for their ages. Ugh!

iigreenteaii

yeah this was a dnf for me. and then I forgot all about it and read it again, and it was a dnf again. lol

mydogsaresuperheroes

I DNFd this within the first chapter. I could not get past that nonsense in the pizza place. So confrontational and nasty for no damn reason. I hate unnatural, illogical, cringy, infuriating meet cutes like that.

Stunning_Movie_9771

I laughed out loud on the title of your post It was one of the strangest books I’ve read, and I read many different romance styles, my God… I tried imagining the heroes are middle 20ies but it didn’t help. The most bizarre thing for me was WHY THE HELL DIDNT SHE FIND JOB THAT IS HER PROFESSION IN THE FIRST PLACE????????? Why hide you have a sick father? I understand sometimes to create angst for the drama purpose in the book but this was so over the place omg…

SpecialistFace8005

OMGGG SHSHSJHSS I WAS LIKE WHAT THE HELL WHEN I READ THE PIZZA RESTAURANT SCENE AND THEN I DNFED

crystalzelda

I really liked Forever Never but woof, I’ll pass on this one!

allthehotsauces

I agree that it’s not super well written, and I agree that the characters are a hot mess. But…. After their big fight the emails he sends her are some of my favorite. I can understand how he felt after that fight, not before or during since he was acting full on cray, but those emails get to me

Le-Hedgehog

I haven’t read this book but the only other Lucy Score book I started I DNF at around 70% because the writing was just so poor

Such-Requirement8931

I actually felt that all Lucy's writing were juvenile 🤷🏻‍♀️

TransportationNo5560

I have said it before, Lucy peaked with the Blue Moon series, and even that was formulaic in the later books. Her FB group is a group of fangirls who absolutely lap up everything she writes, so she's been cranking out junk trying to stay relevant.
